  • The existence of residual stress in the circumferential butt welded pipes is one of the most important problems concerning stress corrosion cracking in service. In this paper, the residual stress distributions in three kinds of circumferential butt welded pipes were measured by the hole drilling strain gage method and calculation using finite element method is performed and its results are compared with the experiments. At the inner surface of the pipe region near the center line of welding is under high tensile residual stress. However, as the distance from the center line of welding increases, the tensile component decreases and finally becomes compressive residual stress at region far away from the center line of welding. The longitudinal residual stress at the outer surface is compressive regardless of the diameter of pipe and the circumferential stress is changed rom compressive to tensile as pipe diameter increases. The results also demonstrate that the residual stress is mainly caused by self restraint bending force in the pipe welding.

  • Residual stresses can be produced during manufacturing processes, eg. welding, machining and plastic working, and also in service. It can be superimposed with externally applied loads, so that unexpected deformations and failures of members will be occurred. Especially, the strength and the life of welded components are affected extensively by the residual stresses distributed around their weldments not only under static loads, but also fatigue loads. These residual stresses are not kept constant, but relaxed or redistributed during service. Under static loads the relaxation takes place when the residual stress superimposed with external stress exceeds locally the yield stress of material used. It is shown that under fatigue loads the residual stress is considerably relieved by the first or few cycle loading, and then gradually relaxed with increasing loading cycles. Although many investigations in this field have been carried out, the phenomenon and mechanism of the stress relaxation by mechanical means are still not clear, and there are few comprehensive models for predicting specific effects on the stress relaxation. In this study, the effects of applied static and fatigue loads on the residual stress relaxation were Investigated, and a model to predict quantitatively the residual stress relaxation was proposed.

  • Neglecting the real joint behaviour in frame analysis may result in unrealistic predictions of the response and reliability of steel frames. The reliability of the prediction of main joint properties according to the component method (Eurocode 3-Part 1.8) still remains open to further investigation. The first step toward the solution is to compare the theoretical expressions given in EN 1993-1-8 and the experimental results. With that goal in mind six nominally the same, but really different specimens of welded beam-to-column joints subjected to static load were tested. The specimens present a combination of nominally identical structural elements produced in different European mills. This paper provides these tests, as well as their detailed evaulation and interpretation. All three joint structural properties (rotational stiffness, moment resistance and rotation capacity) have been considered. Four models for determining the plastic resistance out of experimental Mj-${\phi}$ curves have been applied. The results that have been discussed in detail, point to the fact that EN 1993-1-8 underestimates the real structural properties of the tested type of joint, as well as to the conclusion that detailed research of this problem needs to be conducted using the probabilistic reliability methods.

  • It is well known that the strength and the fatigue life of welded steel components are affected extensively by welding residual stresses distributed around their weldments under not only monotonic but also cyclic loads. The externally applied loads are to be superimposed with the welding residual stresses, so that unexpected deformations and failures of the components might occur. These residual stresses are not kept constant, but relaxed or redistributed during in service. Under monotonic loads the relaxation takes place when the sum of external and welding residual stress exceeds locally the yield stress of material used. By the way, it is shown that under cyclic loads the welding residual stress is considerably relieved by the first or the early cycles of loads, and then gradually relaxed with increasing loading cycles. Although many investigations in this field have been carried out, the phenomenon and mechanism of the stress relaxation are still not clear, and there are few comprehensive models to predict amount of relaxed welding residual stress. In this study, the characteristics of the welding residual stress relaxation under monotonic and cyclic loads were investigated, and a model to predict quantitatively amount of welding residual stress relaxation was proposed.

  • Dissimilar friction welding were produced using 15 mm diameter solid bar in superalloy(Alloy718) to chrome molybdenum steel(SCM440) to investigate their mechanical properties. Consequently, optimal welding conditions were n=2000 rpm, HP=60 MPa, UP=120 MPa, HT=10 sec and UT=10 sec when the metal loss(Mo) is 3.5 mm. Acoustic Emission(AE) technique was applied to analyze the dissimilar friction welding of Alloy718 and SCM440. The relationship between the AE parameters and dissimilar friction welding of both material was discussed. In the case of heating time of 6 sec, 10 sec, 14 sec and 20 sec, 5 AE events per 0.5 seconds and energy about $2.7{\times}10^{10}$ were exhibited in heating time. In upsetting time, resulting in various numbers of events per second and very low energy. The frequency range of the signal generated during the heating time was about 200 kHz. However, the upsetting time resulted in a wide range of signals from very low frequency to high frequency of 500 kHz due to rapid plasticity of the material.

  • The linear and nonlinear seismic responses of steel buildings with perimeter moment resisting frames and welded connections (WC) are estimated and compared with those of buildings with post-tensioned connections (PC). Two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) structural representations of the buildings as well as global and local response parameters are considered. The seismic responses and structural damage of steel buildings with PC may be significantly smaller than those of the buildings with typical WC. The reasons for this are that the PC buildings dissipate more hysteretic energy and attract smaller inertia forces. The response reduction is larger for global than for local response parameters. The reduction may significantly vary from one structural representation to another. One of the main reasons for this is that the energy dissipation characteristics are quite different for the 2D and 3D models. In addition, in the case of the 3D models, the contribution of each horizontal component to the axial load on an specific column may be in phase each other during some intervals of time, but for some others they may be out of phase. It is not possible to observe this effect on the 2D structural formulation. The implication of this is that 3D structural representation should be used while estimating the effect of the PC on the structural response. Thus, steel frames with post-tensioned bolted connections are a viable option in high seismicity areas due to the fact that brittle failure is prevented and also because of their reduced response and self-centering capacity.

  • Reinforcing bars, a major component of the pre-fab structure, adheres to the existing on-site assembly method and attempts to develop and commercialize the technology of the pre-assembly method, but the effect is insignificant. Welded Wire / Bar Mat (WBM) has various advantages such as commercialization of rebar through machine manufacturing to improve workability, but it is different from the existing design and the construction method is different from the previous one. Therefore, to maximize the advantages of WBM and improve productivity, manufacturing, transportation, and construction from the design stage should be considered based on BIM from the initial design stage. In this paper, the concept of the design support system for the WBM was established based on the use of BIM in concrete reinforcement and the preliminary research on the WBM. WBM conversion design was performed for the existing prefabricated members, and based on this, the exchange format and system of the master prefabricated model with the WBM design data were set up. As a result of the pilot test, it was found that the traditional reinforcing bar information extracted from the master prefab model has transmitted 100% accurately. As for the WBM information, 100% of the information on the straight reinforcement was transmitted and represented, and the information on the bent reinforcement was found to have a 90% recall in the master BIM tool.

  • This study reviews the influence function method(IFM) for calculating stress intensity factors (SIFs, K) and modifies it to apply for the estimating the residual fatigue life for the cracked components under complex stress fields. An IFM has been developed to analyze SIFs for surface cracks which are subjectedto nonuniformly distributed stresses. Through elastic superposition, the influence function method properly accounts for redistribution of stress as the crack grows through the component. This influence function is unique to the given geometry and independent of the loading. Some examples have been provided to show the effectiveness of the IFM including the distributions of K in a residual stress field. The significant effect of residual stress upon fatigue crack growth in a welded component has been demonstrated with the IFM.

  • Alloy 718 nozzle component was manufactured by hot forging and electron beam welding process. In this process, 718 billets produced in domestic company were used and evaluated. Before performing industrial scale hot forging, small size hot compression tests were carried out under various process conditions and then microstructural evaluations were analyzed. Using the results, FEM simulations were performed in order to optimize the hot working process. After hot working, forged work-pieces were machined and welded by electron beam. Final nozzle components were heat treated and their microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated.

  • Stainless steel pipe of type 304 the with a wall thickness of 26.9 mm and the outer diameter 406.4 mm is welded by manual arc welding process. Mechanical properties and fracture toughness of type 304 stainless steel are investigated in the temperature ranging from room temperature to -162$^{\circ}C$ The results obtained are summarized as follows. The tensile strength noticeably increases as the temperature becomes lower while the yield strength is relatively insensitive to temperature. The Charpy impact energy and CTOD values become higher in the case that crack propagation direction is aligned to the transverse axis upon the rolling direction than longitudinal direction. The drop of fracture toughness is associated with the noticeable diminution of plastic component as temperature seduces from room temperature to -162$^{\circ}C$ .
