  • In real structures, multi-spot welded joints are more frequently used than a single-spot welded joint. Most researches, however, have been focused to a single-spot welded joint until now. In this paper, the fatigue behavior of multi-spot welded joints are investigated using the finite element solutions of the multi-spot welded specimens. The local strain approach is used rather than the stress intensity factor approach to estimate the fatigue life since the former is quite simple and straightforward. It is found that the fatigue behavior of multi-spot welded joints is different from that of single-spot welded joints. The local strain approach is still applicable to multi-spot welded joints.

  • The welded specimens were made by butt welding of the 2 wires of 50mm length using the pulsed YAG laser. The laser welded wires were tested for investigating the shape memory effect and the ability of super elasticity. The fatigue properties of the welded wires were investigated using the rotary bending fatigue tester specially designed for wires. Moreover, the effect of defocusing distance during laser welding on the static and fatigue properties was Investigated. The shape memory effect and super elasticity of the laser welded wires were approximately identical with that of base metal at the test temperature below 353K. However, the welded wires were broken within elastic limit at the test temperature above 353k. Under the cyclic bending loading conditions, the welded wires could be useful only below the elastic limit, while the base metal had sufficient fatigue life even the stress induced M-phase region. The fatigue strength of the welded wires was about half of that of the base metal. The deterioration of the static and fatigue properties in the welded wires was proven to be from the large difference of the transformation behavior between the base metal and welded part that is caused by vaporization of Ni-content at the welded part during the welding process. The defocusing distance below 3mm acted more largely on lowering the strength of the welded wires than that of 6mm or 8mm.

  • In this study, the welded residual stresses test was carried out with pure titanium and TIG welded material using in chemical plants an airplane frames etc.. The relationship between process parameters and residual stresses is complex since a number of factors are involved. Extensive studies have been carried out to determine the effects of various process parameters on residual stress. The result of micro-hardness about butt welded spacemen was measured of low hardness value in the melting metal zone. The residual stress of welded zone on the Titanium plate by the sectioning method and finite element method was high measured in the spacemen of high current and voltage. Also, compressive residual stress in the range of distance about 15∼20mm from the middle of the deposited metal area is very change. The result of impact test about butt welded spacemen of pure titanium plate was measured of very difference in the welded bead, heat affect zone and base metal, and be measured of high impact value in the heat affect zone. The measure result of welded residual stresses about pure titanium is high measured hen nominal steel plate. The V-Type butt welded spacemen, that of the measurement result on the welded residual stress is high measure then X-Type butt welded spacemen.

  • Building hardware joints are welded in most cases, which have risks of fire and explosion. Besides, the secondary damage of the destruction of the welded parts can be caused by the horizontal displacement of the structure due to earthquake or wind load. This paper compared the horizontal displacement following abilities of welded building hardware and non-welded building hardware. To do this, We conducted actual formation shake table test, and checked on the horizontal displacement following ability of structure by comparing their responses to earthquake load. We made the 2m-high framework to examine the responses of the actually constructed building hardwares, and analyzed the displacement responses of the welded-typed, non-welded-typed, and cruciform bracket building hardwares. We conducted the test by increasing acceleration rate until displacement reached 40mm corresponding to allowable relative story displacement II. The result of the test showed that the building hardware using welding work made cracking and breakage on welded connections of welded building hardware, but non-welded building hardware with no use of welding work and cruciform bracket building hardware make no problem, and that non-welded building hardware is superior to that of the welded building hardware in the horizontal displacement following ability due to earthquake or wind load.

  • Most manufacturing processes, including welding, create residual stresses. Residual stresses can reduce material strength and cause fractures. For estimating the reliability and aging of a welded structure, residual stresses should be evaluated as precisely as possible. Optical techniques such as holographic interferometry, electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI), Moire interferometry, and shearography are noncontact means of measuring residual stresses. Among optical techniques, ESPI is typically used as a nondestructive measurement technique of in-plane displacement, such as stress and strain, and out-of-plane displacement, such as vibration and bending. In this study, ESPI was used to measure the residual stress on the welded part of butt-welded American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) A36 specimens with $CO_2$ welding. Four types of specimens, base metal specimen (BSP), tensile specimen including welded part (TSP), compression specimen including welded part (CSP), and annealed tensile specimen including welded part (ATSP), were tested. BSP was used to obtain the elastic modulus of a base metal. TSP and CSP were used to compare residual stresses under tensile and compressive loading conditions. ATSP was used to confirm the effect of heat treatment. Residual stresses on the welded parts of specimens were obtained from the phase map images obtained by ESPI. The results confirmed that residual stresses of welded parts can be measured by ESPI.

  • Various equipments in plants are welded with two different materials and it is required to investigate the effects of fatigue crack propagation on the neighborhood of a welded portion. The characteristics of fatigue crack growth in the base metal of carbon and stainless steel, in the carbon and stainless steel sides located in the neighborhood of welded portion (carbon/stainless steel), respectively and welded portion, are investigated. The results show that the crack growth in the welded portion (carbon/stainless steel) is an average value of the crack growths in the carbon and stainless steel respectively located in the neighborhood of the welded portion. It is found that the crack growth in the welded portion is not significantly different from those in the carbon and stainless steel sides. Hence it can be concluded that the structure welded with two different materials wold not impede the integrity based on the fatigue crack growth.

  • This paper describes the results of experiments on the bending behavior of welded square tube structures for drive shaft sub frame of BIMODAL Tram. The used specimens to test were two different type made of ATOS60 and ST52-3. The square tube made of ST52-3 is the non-welded structure, while the square tube made of ATOS60 is the welded structure. The welded square tube made of ATOS60 will be applied for drive shaft sub frame of BIMODAL Tram. This welded square tube could reduce the manufacturing cost in comparison of non-welded square tube. The results showed that the bending performance of welded square tube made of ATOS60 was proven, and the bending behavior was in an good agreement with that of nonlinear finite element analysis.

  • In studying the fatigue strength of fillet welded the section of pressure vessel pad, this study was to evaluate the effect of weld toe notch and to compare the results of numerical analysis with the results of fatigue experiments of fillet welded A5l6 grade 60 steel specimens. The fatigue life for the Bead welded specimen was about 1.4 times as much it as the 1Pad welded specimen. Also, The fatigue life for the 2Pad welded specimen was about 1.5 times as much it as the 1Pad welded specimen. In $da/dN-{\Delta}K$ curve, the fatigue crack growth rate for the 1Pad welded specimen appeared higher than that of the 2Pad welded specimen in the same initial region of ${\Delta}K$, had a similar Inclination In the stabled region.
