  • The resistance spot welding is one of the most commonly used welding process for joining the sheet metal in automotive manufacturing process due to higher deposition rates and higher economy achieved. Control variables in the resistance spot welding for achieving high quality are welding current, welding force and welding time. Generally at the manufacturing scene, welding current Vs welding time lobe diagram is used to estimate weldability because controlling welding force is not practical due to economical reasons. However new automotive steel plates have been developed to make lightweight automobiles and to improve resistance against rusting. Also the weldability of these steel plates are worst than the existing steel plates because of changing bare metal and surface plating effect. In consequence of above mentioned reasons, it is necessary to use welding force to present the lobe diagram. In this study, we obtained the welding force Vs welding current lobe diagram for commonly used GA steel plate and found that the second order repression model of tensile shear strength was useful in reducing the number of experiments, and the indentation, and thickness change during welding were used as a response to estimate quantitatively expulsion.

  • In the present day, new performances are demanded for automobile body steel sheet for example, light weight, durability, resistance corrosion and environmental protection. For an improvement of resistance corrosion, European automobile companies developed pre-sealed steel in 1990's. Pre-sealed steel have organic coated layer upper zinc coated layer. Evaluating a resistance spot weldability of pre-sealed steel plate is important because resistance spot welding is used mainly in automobile body joining process. In this study, evaluating a weldability of pre-sealed steel plate was carried out using lobe diagram, dynamic resistance and high-speed image. Usually, Pre-sealed steel has poor weldability than GA steel's. To improve a weldability of pre-sealed steel sheet, pre-current was applied to welding process. Pre-current is applied prior to base-current. In conclusion, the weldability of pre-sealed steel has been improved than GA steel's by applying pre-current.

  • This study analyzes the resistance spot weldability of DP60 steels. To analyze the resistance spot weldability of DP60 steels, tensile strength test and macro-section test were conducted for the resistance spot welds. Acceptable welding conditions were determined as a function of the resistance spot welding process parameters such as electrode force, welding time, and welding current. The lower limit of the welding lobe was the minimum shear tension strength for 590MPa-grade steel while the upper limit was determined whether or not expulsion was detected.

  • Purpose This study analyzes resistance spot weldability of DP60 steels. Methodology To compare the resistance spot weldability of DP60 steels, tensile strength test and macro-section test were conducted for the resistance spot welds. Findings Welding force is 200kgf more appropriate in terms of 300kgf the larger the width of the welding zone. Acceptable welding current condition and welding lobe were changed depending on welding force. Research limitations This study is forced on inverter DC resistance spot weldability of 590Mpa-grade steels for automotive application. Practical implications This study confirms the weldability of DP60 steel by comparing resistance spot weldability depending on welding force. Originality This study analysed resistance spot weldability depending on welding force. wedability of DP60 steel were determined by welding lobes.

  • The dynamic resistance monitoring in primary circuit is one of the important issues. Because in-process and real time quality assurance of resistance spot weld is needed to increase the product reliability. In this study, new dynamic resistance detecting method is proposed as a practical manner of weld quality assurance using instantaneous current and voltage measured at the primary circuit. and also, various patterns of primary dynamic resistance curve are characterized with the macro photograph and the weldability lobe curve. It is found that the primary dynamic resistance patterns are basically similar to those of the secondary, but there is evident advantage such as no extra devices are needed to obtain the quality information and eventually real time feedback control will be possible.

  • The spot weldability of coated steels for automobile has been investigated. Coated steels of SPC-Zn DC, SPC Zn-Ni SC, SPC Zn-Ni DC, SPC Zn-Fe DC and OCCS were welded under different conditions of welding current, force and time. Coating thickness at the welded surface was reduced as increased welding current. Tensile shear strength(TSS) and cross tensile strength (CTS) were increased up to expulsion began, then dropped as increased current. Optimum conditions of welding force and time were different, however 200~250kgf and 15~20cycle were optimum for coated SPC (Steel Plate Cold). Weldability lobes were measured for each coated steel and they showed narrow range of working welding current. The organic composite coated steel (OCCS) had the highest current to get $\sqrt5{t}$ nugget size and narrowest working welding current range.

  • The development of lightweight car bodies is the most prominent issue in the automotive industry today, in preparation of environmental regulations such as reduction of CO$_2$ emissions. Also, with the recent implementation of mandatory off-set collision test, many studies have been carried out to enhance the safety of automobiles. Recently, TRIP(Transformation Induced Plasticity) steel has developed as a prominent alternative due to its high strength and superior elongation. In this study, TRIP steel weldability is evaluated with lobe curve, continuous spot welds, shunt effect, and weld of edge position.

  • Nowadays, car manufacturers tried to improve automotive fuel efficiency, and applied many high strength steels such as AHSS or UHSS to car bodies. Therefore, the number of steel combinations for the resistance spot welding are dramatically increased and the need for weldability evaluation of these combinations are also required. In this study, we suggest the lobe curve using FEM simulations for DP780 steel with 1.0t, 1.4t. The lobe curves which could expressed weldablity and optimal welding condition were obtained according to 6 steel combinations. There were two combinations for same steel sheet which were DP780 1.0t, DP780 1.4t. Dissimilar steel sheet combination with different thickness was 1.0t and 1.4t of DP780. Different steel combinations were DP780 1.0t and SPRC440 1.0t, and DP780 1.0t and DP590 1.0t. Finally dissimilar combinations was and DP780 1.0t and DP590 1.4t. The trend of low boundary and high boundary variation of lobe curve were analyzed with a viewpoint of the contact resistance and the heat input.

  • With the high proportion of zinc coated steels in body-in-white assembly, newly developed surface roughness textured galvannealed steel sheets have been introduced. In this study, zinc coated and surface roughness textured steel sheets were welded by resistance spot welding to investigate its weldability including electrode wear test. Based on the results of tensile-shear test, nugget diameter changes, and electrode tip growth test, it was clear that both surface roughness textured steels (GA-T and GA-E) showed good weldability. Also, there was no large difference in weldability and electrode wear behavior between GA-T and GA-E steels which have different surface roughness morphology. An analysis of electrode degradation showed Fe and Zn penetration through the electrode tip surface at 2400 welds reached $55{\sim}60{\mu}m$ and $75{\sim}80{\mu}m$, respectively. Therefore, there is no significant effect of surface roughness morphology on spot weldability of surface roughness textured galvannealed steel sheets. However, slight difference in thickness of alloying layers existing on electrode tip was found between GA-T and GA-E steels.
