In this study, the residual stress and the acoustic emission Charactreistics from fatigue crack propagation were investigated, bused on the welded material of STS316L. The residual stress of welding locations could be evaluated by ultrasonic parameters, such as L$_{CR}$ wave velocity and L$_{CR}$ wave frequency; the residual stress between base metal and weld metal was evaluated. In the fatigue tests, three types of signals were observed, regardless of specimen condition, base metal, and weld metal. Based on NDE analysis of AE signals by the time-frequency analysis method, it should also be possible to evaluate, in real-time, the crack propagation and final fracture process, resulting from various damages and defects in welded structural members.
This study investigates the effects of the material properties and the fatigue behaviors in the SM490A material butt weld specimens due to the heat-treatment and the grinding. In the fatigue behavior, the heat-treatment affects the fatigue life. The S-N curves of both matrix specimen and butt weld specimen are reversed at some cycle by the existence or nonexistence of heat-treatment. The grinding on the bead makes the fatigue limit decrease in the all specimens. But the reinforcement removed, the fatigue limit increases at the high cycle. Also, this study investigates the fatigue life estimation by examining butt weld bead profiles. The butt weld beads, which are welded by semi-robot method, have non-uniform bead profiles described by $\theta,\;\rho$ and h. The stress concentration factors $K_t$, are changed by each different $\theta,\;\rho$ and h from 1.395 to 2.863. Hence, the sensitivity of $K_t$ is changed by each $\theta,\;\rho$ and h. As $\theta$ becomes lower and $\rho$ and h become higher, $K_t$ increases. The fatigue life can he estimated very closely for the AAY specimens without residual stress using only butt weld bead profiles. But, fur the AAN specimens with residual stress, the fatigue life must be estimated by considering both the weld bead profiles and the residual stress data.
Residual stresses arising from the materials processing such as welding and joining affect significantly the structural integrity depending on the external loading condition. The quantitative measurement of the residual stresses is of great importance in order to characterize the effects of the residual stresses on the structural safety. In this paper, we introduce a newly devised destructive technique, the contour method (CM), which is applied for the measurements of the residual stress distributions through the thickness of a 80 mm thick steel weld. Residual stresses are evaluated from the contour, which is the normal displacement on a cut surface produced by the relaxation of residual stresses, using a finite element model. The CM provides a two-dimensional map of the residual stresses normal to the cut surface. The CM developed in the present study was validated in comparison with the residual stress distribution determined by a well-established neutron-diffraction residual stress instrument (RSI) instrumented in HANARO neutron research reactor.
Residual stresses are inherently introduced into the engineering components during manufacturing including rolling, forging, bending and welding processes. Excessive residual stresses are known to be detrimental to the proper integrity and performance of components. Neutron diffraction has become a well-established technique for the determination of residual stresses in welds. The deep penetration capability of neutrons into most metallic materials makes neutron diffraction a powerful tool for the residual stress measurements through the thickness of the weld specimen. Furthermore, the unique volume-averaged bulk characteristic of the scattering beam and mapping capability in three dimensions is suitable for the engineering purpose. In this presentation, the neutron diffraction measurements of the residual stresses will be introduced and measurement results will highlighted in thick weld plates.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate structural integrity of a weldment which is partially screwed and then welded. Two finite element models are constructed and solved: operating temperature and internal pressure are considered in the first simple model, and welding process and normal operating condition including heat-up process are simulated in the second model. Structural integrity assessment criteria are satisfied with both finite element models, therefore the repair weldment finely sustains structural integrity of this assembly and prevents leakage. Stresses are dramatically increased when weld residual stress is considered, but it should be considered as a secondary stress.
Welding processes cause undesirable problems, such as residual stresses and deformations due to the thermal loads imposed by local heating, melting, and cooling processes. This paper presents a computational modeling technique to simulate the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process, emphasizing the effect of the melting bead on the residual stress distribution. Both a three-bar analogy and a three-dimensional thermo-mechanical finite element analysis are carried out in order to explain the effect. Element (de)activation, enthalpy, and adjustment of the reference temperature of thermal strain are considered with respect to the effect of the weld filler metal added to the base metal during a thermo-elastic-plastic analysis. Stress distributions obtained by the present study are compared with measured values and available data from other studies. The effect of the melting bead on the residual stress distribution is discussed and demonstrated.
There are many Industry Code and Standard (ICS) for Structural Integrity Assessment (SIA) on welded structure with defect. The general ICSs, such as R6, BS 7910 and API 579-1/ASME FFS-1, provide equations to determine the upper bound residual stress profiles based on collections from many literatures. However, these residual stress profiles used in the SIA cause the conservative design for welded structures. In this study, the structural integrity assessment for girth weld in pipeline has been conducted based on fracture mechanics. In addition, thermo-elastic plastic FE analysis was performed for evaluating the residual stress of girth weld in pipeline. The weight function solution is used to determine the stress intensity factor using the residual stress profile obtained by the FE analysis. This approach can account for redistribution and relaxation of residual stress as the defects grow. In order to the evaluate quantitative comparison between BS 7910 and weight function solution, structural integrity assessment determining allowable crack size on cracked pipe was performed with failure assessment diagram.

PWSCC(Primary Stress Corrosion Cracking) in Alloy 82/182 butt welds is the problem affecting safety and integrity of nuclear power plant. PWSCC can be occurred in the area that is at high magnitude of tensile residual stress, such as Alloy 82/182 dissimilar metal welds in PZR(pressurizer) nozzles. There have been a number of incidents recently at the dissimilar metal welds in overseas nuclear power plants. Overlay weld is the one of the effective methods to decrease tensile residual stress of inside surface, which will result in preventing PWSCC. In this paper, overlay weld conditions on the purpose of preventing PWSCC was explained and the benefit of the overlay weld was confirmed performing finite element analysis.

The effect of heat treatments were considered on the residual stress fields of AISI 4130 weldments. In experiments, various heat treatments such as preheating, postheating, stress relieve annealing and hardening treatment were carried out for the GTA weldments and the residual stress was measured by using the hole drilling method. The post weld heat treatment at 230.deg.C, which aimed mainly to prevent the possible weld cracking, was found to have only a negligible effect on the welding residual stress distribution, while the annealing treatment at 600.deg.C almost completely removes the residual stress. It was also revealed that the hardening treatment causes no further residual stresses in weldments.
One of the most interesting and promising steel groups considered for the rocket motor case, aircraft and aerospace component is the maraging(martensitic plus aging) nickel steel, developed by International Nickel Company in 1960. This material attains a very high strength with good fracture toughness by simple heat treatments which do not involve a quenching. Full strength can be obtained by "maraging" at 480.deg. for 3 hours for the 18% Ni maraging steel. The effect of heat treatments was considered on the residual stress field of 18% Ni maraging steel weldments. In experiments, various heat treatments such as stress relieve heat treatment, aging and solution heat treatment were carried out of the GTA weldments and the residual stresses were measured by using the hole drilling method. Whereas the conventional pattern of residual stress shows the stresses to be maximum along the weld centerline with tensile stress extending into the heat affected zone, the pattern in maraging steels shows the centerline stress to be compressive. After welding, a series of aging, solution heat treatment and solution heat treatment plus aging treatment were carried out and the residual stresses were measured to reveal that these heat treatments almost completely remove the welding residual stresses.
