This study deals with the mechanical properties of STS304-Al351 friction welding zone. Main results are as follows ; under the condition of upset pressure 75MPa, the tensile strength of STS304-al6351 friction weld interface was higher than that of Al6351 base metal, and the highest tensile strength(290MPa) was obtained at upset pressure 125MPa. The hardness profile across the weld interface shows that the hardness of both STS304 and Al6351 is higher around the weld interface, and sharply increased hardness on the STS304 side is related with the plastic deformation of micro volume. As the result of analyzing the tensile fracture, it showed perfect soft fracture.
Fracture mechanics evaluation of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in the dissimilar metal weld (DMW) for the nuclear piping system is performed; simulating the transition joint of the ferritic nozzle to austenitic safe-end fabricated with the Inconel Alloy A82/182 buttering and welds. Residual stresses in the DMW are computed by the finite element (FE) analyses Then, to investigate the SCC in the weld root under the combined residual and system operation stresses, the fracture mechanics parameters for a semi-elliptical surface crack are evaluated using the finite element alternating method (FEAM). As a result, it is found that the effect of weld residual stresses on the crack-driving forces is dominant, as high as three times or more than the operation stresses.
The influence of weld defect, residual stress and microstructure on the Low Cycle Fatigue(L. C. F.) behaviour of AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel weldment has been studied. The specimens were welded by shielded metal are welding process, post weld heat treated(PWHT) at 900.deg.C for 1.5hrs, and tested under total strain controlled condition at room temperature. The results of the experiment showed that weld defect affected the L.C.F. behaviour of weldment deleteriously compared to the residual stress or microstructure, and it reduced the L.C.F. life about 70-80%. The PWHT exhibited beneficial effect on the L.C.F. behaviour and increased the L.C.F. life about 120%. This enhancement by PWHT was attributed to the removal of residual stress and recovery of weld metal ductility. The cyclic stress flow of as welded specimens showed intermediate cyclic softening, whereas those of heat treated specimens showed continuous cyclic hardening, and this difference was explained in terms of the residual stress removal and dislocation behaviour. Scanning electron microscopy studies of fatigue fracture surface showed that weld defects of large size and near weld surface were detrimental to the L.C.F. behaviour of weldment.
Conventional fracture tests of resistance spot welds have been performed without consideration of the paint baking process in the automobile manufacturing line. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of the paint baking process on load carrying capacity and fracture mode for resistance spot welded 590 dual phase (DP), 780DP, 980DP, 590 transformation in duced plasticity (TRIP), 780TRIP and 1180 complex phase (CP) steels. With paint baking after resistance spot welding, the l-shape tensile test (LTT) and nano-indentation test were conducted on the as-welded and paint baked samples. Paint baking increased the load-carrying capacity of the resistance spot welded samples and improved the fracture appearance from partial interfacial fracture (PIF) to button fracture (BF). Improvement in fracture appearance after LTT is observed on weldments of 780 MPa grade TRIP steels, especially in the low welding current range with paint baking conditions. The higher carbon contents (or carbon equivalent) are attributed to the low weldability of the resistance spot welding of high strength steels. Improvement of the fracture mode and load carrying ability has been achieved with ferrite hardening and carbide formation during the paint baking process. The average nano-indentation hardness profile for each weld zone shows hardening of the base metal and softening of the heat affected zone (HAZ) and the weld metal, which proves that microstructural changes occur during low temperature heat treatment.

This paper summarizes the results of full-scale cyclic seismic testing on four RBS (reduced beam section) steel moment connections. Key test variables were web bolting vs. welding and strong vs. medium PZ (panel zone) strength. The specimen with medium PZ strength was specially designed to mobilize energy dissipation from both the PZ and RBS region in a balanced way; the aim was to reduce the requirement of expensive doubler plates. Both strong and medium PZ specimens with web-welding were able to provide sufficient connection rotation capacity required of special moment frames, whereas specimens with web-bolting showed inferior performance due to the premature brittle fracture of the beam flange across the weld access hole. In contrast to the case of web-welded specimens, the web-bolted specimens could not transfer the actual plastic moment of the original (or unreduced) beam section to the column. If a quality welding for the beam-to-column joint is made as in this study, the fracture-prone area tends to move into the beam flange base metal within the weld access hole. Analytical study was also conducted to understand the observed base metal fracture from the engineering mechanics point of view.

Finite element analyses for bursting failure prediction in bulge forming under combined internal pressure and independent axial feeding are carried out. By means of the FEM combined with Oyane's ductile fracture criterion based on Hills quadratic plastic potential, the forming limit and bursting pressure level are investigated for a seamed tube that comprises of weldment, heat affected zone(HAZ) and base material parts. Especially, in order to determine the material property of HAZ tensile tests for the base material and the weld metal are executed based on iso-strain approach. Finally, through a series of bulge forming simulations with consideration of the weldment and HAZ it is concluded that the proposed method would be able to predict the bursting pressure and fracture initiation site more realistically, so the approach can be extended to a wide range of practical bulge forming processes.
In this study, the residual stress and the acoustic emission Charactreistics from fatigue crack propagation were investigated, bused on the welded material of STS316L. The residual stress of welding locations could be evaluated by ultrasonic parameters, such as L$_{CR}$ wave velocity and L$_{CR}$ wave frequency; the residual stress between base metal and weld metal was evaluated. In the fatigue tests, three types of signals were observed, regardless of specimen condition, base metal, and weld metal. Based on NDE analysis of AE signals by the time-frequency analysis method, it should also be possible to evaluate, in real-time, the crack propagation and final fracture process, resulting from various damages and defects in welded structural members.

The behavior of corner crack propagation by unidirectional plane bending fatigue was investigated in the butt welded joints of SS41 and SM50 steel plates including an edge through-thickness notch. The properties of fatigue crack propagation were inspected in the weld metal, heat-affected zone, and base metal of the welded joints. Main results obtained are as follows; (1) When a plate with an edge through-thickness notch is loaded by plane bending fatigue in indirection, the 2 variant corner cracks on the upper and lower edge of the plate are initiated and propagated respectively from the notch. (2) In case of a specimen containing a corner crack, it is more reasonable to estimate the crack propagation rate by area of fracture surface than by crack surface length. (3) The rate of fatigue crack propagation becomes faster in the following order; weld metal, heat-affected zone, and base metal. (4) The specimen including reinforcement shape is rapidly failed throughout bond due to effect of its shape when the repeated load exceeds a certain cycle.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate fracture toughness on the Laser and the electron beam welded joints of high tensile steels (HT500, HT550, HT650) by using 3-point bend CTOD and Charpy impact test. WM (weld metal) CTOD tests have been carried out using two kinds of CTOD specimen, the Laser beam welding (108mm length, and 24mm width, and 12mm thickness) and the electron beam welding (l71mm length, and 38mm width, and 19mm thickness). WM Charpy impact specimen is a standard V-notch type, and the temperature of the experiment is changed from -45 to 20 degree of centigrade. FE-analysis is also performed in order to investigate the effect of stress-strain fields on fracture characteristics. Results of the standard V-notch Charpy test are influenced by strength mis-match effect and the absorbed energy vE depends on crack path, and The transition temperature of Laser beam welded joints is more higher than that of electron beam welded joints. Results of the 3-point bend test give low critical CTOD and the crack path is in the weld metal of al specimens. These results indicate fracture toughness characteristics of the welded joints and transition temperature of HT500 are similar both a Laser beam welded joint and an electron beam welded joint. But the fracture toughness and the transition temperature of the electron beam welded joints of HT550 and HT650 are higher than those o the Laser beam welded joints.

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the material properties of SA312 TP316 and SA312 TP304 stainless steels and their associated welds manufactured for safety injection system of Yonggwang 3,4 nuclear generating stations. A total of 62 tensile tests and 46 fracture toughness tests were conducted and the effects of various parameters such as pipe size, crack plane orientation, tests were conducted and the effects of various parameters such as pipe size, crack plane orientation, test temperature, welding on material properties were discussed. Test results show that the effect of test temperature on fracture toughness was significant while the effects of pipe size and crack plane orientation on fracture toughness were negligible. Fracture toughness of the weld metal was in general higher than that of the base metal.
