  • This study analyzed the structural weld strength for a door hinge for a field artillery ammunition support vehicle. In order to determine the optimal conditions, we measured the modal analysis and analyzed the leg length of a rear door hinge. From these methods, we acquired the vibration frequency of normal mode and the optimal welding leg length conditions. It was possible to obtain a structural stability for a rear door hinge of the field artillery ammunition support vehicle. In the future, this should be used as a reference source for the weld strength analysis of high vibration and high weight structures for another welding system design.

  • The fatigue test was carried out to evaluate the fatigue characteristics of the accelerated cooled (ACC) TMCP steel and its welded joint. From this study, it was confirmed that ACC TMCP steel has higher fatigue strength than conventional steels. After welding, however, the fatigue strength of ACC TMCP steel was deteriorated associated with HAZ softening when weld reinforcement was removed. On the other hand, with weld reinforcement, there is no effect of HAZ softening on the fatigue strength of welded joint because it is strongly dependant on the detail weld geometry i.e., stress concentration factor. Accordingly the fatigue strength of actual welded joint increases with decreasing the stress concentration factor of welded joint, regardless of HAZ softening.

  • Laser weldability of the aluminized steel for the full penetration welding will be described in this paper. We focused on the effect of Al coating conditions on weld strength. For these objectives, aluminized steel sheets that have various thickness and coating weight were prepared for laser welding. And then, tensile-shear and hardness test were carried out. At the same time, Al contents in weld after laser welding were analyzed and their correlations with mechanical properties were investigated. Besides, as removing partially coating layer, weldability has been investigated according to the position of coating layer. As a result of this study, tensile-shear strength was decreased with increasing Al contents in weld, and Al of coating layer caused grain growth.

  • The influence of welding heat input variation(600-900J/cm) and heat-treatment condition after welding on tensile strength of butt welded joint in $175Kg/mm^2$ strength level Maraging steel(Co-free and Co-containing) sheets was investigated on the basis of hardness distribution, microstructure of weld metal and fracture surface. The obtained main results are as follows; 1. The strength of weldment (UTS, NTS), joint efficiency showed a little decreasing tendency with the increase in welding heat input, and the elongation showed a little increasing tendency with the increase in the width of weld metal. It was considered because of the plastic constraint of the high strength base metal. 2. The strength of weldment was better in the solution treatment and aging than the aging only after welding due to the disappearance of almost denverite in weld metal. 3. The hardness distribution in weldment after welding and heat-treatment was almost similar to both Co containing and Co free Maraging steel with change in welding heat input. 4. The fracture was occurred at weld metal, and the fracture surface showed a relatively shallow dimples in both Co containing and Co free Maraging steel.

  • A spacer grid which is one of the most important structural components in a pressurized water reactor fuel is an interconnected array of slotted grid straps, welded at the intersections to form an egg-crate structure. The spacer grid is required to not only protect fuel rods stably but also have sufficient lateral crush strength for the sake of enabling shut-down of the nuclear reactor during abnormal operating environments. Then, the lateral crush strength of the spacer grid is closely related with welding quality of the spacer grid. Previous research on the crush strength analysis of the spacer grid had been performed using only parent material properties. In this study, to investigate the effect on the crush strength of the spacer grid when used mechanical properties in weld zone instead of parent material properties, crush strength analysis considering mechanical properties in weld zone obtained from the instrumented indentation technique was performed and compared the results with the previous research.

  • In recent years, considerable attention has been paid to the research and development of high-strength steel plates, with particular emphasis on the enhancement of the seismic resistance of buildings and bridges. Many efforts have also been undertaken to improve the properties of high-strength bolts and weld materials. However, there are still different opinions on steel joints that combine high-strength bolts and fillet welds. Therefore, it is necessary to verify the design specifications and guidelines, especially for newly developed 1,400-MPa high-strength bolts, 570-MPa steel plates, and weld materials. This paper presents the results of literature reviews and experimental investigations. Test parameters include bolt strengths, weld orientations, and their combinations. The results show that advances in steel materials have increased the plastic deformation capacities of steel welds. That allows combination joints to gain their maximum strength before the welds have fracture failures. When in combination with longitudinal welds, high-strength bolts slip, come in contact with cover plates, and develop greater bearing strength before the joints reach their maximum strength. However, in the case of combinations with transverse welds, changes in crack angles cause the welds to provide additional strength. The combination joints can therefore develop strength greater than estimated by adding the strength of bolted joints in proportion to those of welded joints. Consequently, using the slip resistance as the available strength of high-strength bolts is recommended. That ensures a margin of safety in the strength design of combination joints.

  • Vehicle body structures are formed by thousands of spot welds and fatigue failure of vehicle structures occur near the spot welds after driving a long way at a durability test road. It is necessary to know accurately the reason of the fatigue failure of the spot weld in the developing stage in order to reinforce it. Many investigations have been done regarding the strength of spot welded joints, contributing to understand its fatigue strength. In developing process, a fatigue failed spot welded area can be repaired by $CO_2$ welding or another method to continue the test. To know the effect of reinforcing these welds, several methods of welding were analyzed and compared to spot welding. With the results of this test, the appropriate repair method can be used instead of spot welding during the development of new car and best design guide can be given for the strength. In this study, fatigue and static tensile tests are made and microstructure is investigated for the purpose of estimating the strength of welded joints by using spot welded and $CO_2$ plug welded specimens. The tested specimens are of two types : Tensile-shear type(TS) and L-tension type(LT).

  • It is difficult to control welding variables during spot welding of non-ferrous metals like aluminum because of the low electrical resistance of the material. It has been suggested that a solid state welding process such as friction stir spot welding or extru-spot welding can be used to spot weld aluminum plates. In the extru-spot welding, there is a need to increase the weld strength by improving the shape of the welding die. The current study shows that the weld strength for an extru-spot welding can be increased by using a pin placed on the inside of the upper electrode in the welding die. In the current study, the deformed shape of the insert rivet and the stress distribution in the welding zone were analyzed by simulation. Extru-rivet spot welding experiments were performed by changing the height of pin on the inside of the upper electrode. From the experimental result, it is shown that the weld strength for an extru-rivet spot welding can be increased by adjusting the height of the pin. The optimal shape of the deformed rivet after the extru-rivet spot welding can be observed from the simulation results. The deformed shape of the insert rivet can also be controlled by the height of pin.

  • The pipelines for natural gas transmission were buried in the ground of 1.5m depth. The pipelines were continuously subjected to vehicle load and internal pressure change by the quantity consumed of natural gas. In this paper, high cycle fatigue properties of natural gas transmission pipelines were studied. Fatigue specimens were obtained from the base and weld metal of circular pipe. Fatigue strength increased with increasing yield strength. Especially, the fatigue strength of base metal was higher than the yield strength of base metal and the fatigue strength of weld metal by manufactured process of TMCP.
