The object of this study is to investigate the effect of compounded welding by using acoustic emission (AE) signals fur weld heat affected zone (HAZ) in tensile testing. This study was carried out a SM 490A high tension steel for electronic shielded metal are welding (SMAW), $\textrm{CO}_2$ gas arc welding and TIG welding. And correspondingly, the root openings are 3, 4 and 2.8mm. Data displays are based on the measured parameters of the AE signals, along with environmental variables such as time and load. These history plots give us useful and powerful information to analyze the results of material evaluation testing.

Since welding process for most pipelines with large diameter has been carried out by the manual process, automation of the welding process is necessary for the sake of consistent weld quality and improvement in productivity. Therefore the development of the optimized algorithm to decide the welding condition is an effective technique to prove the feasibility of interface standards and intelligent control technology to increase productivity and reduce the cost of system integration. In this study, the pipe welding experiment has been carried out using plused GMA welding process to select optimal welding condition. And necessary information in root-pass welding has been obtained by applying in the pipeline using the selected welding conditions through the welding experiment.
Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) is a common practice to join thick plates such as the structural members of large scale offshore structures and very large container ships. The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties and variability of the fatigue crack initiation life in the flux cored arc welded API 2W Gr.50 steel joints typically applied to offshore structures with a focus on the effect of the materials in fatigue crack growth life from the notch root of a compact tension specimen. Offshore structural steel (API 2W Gr.50) plates (60-mm thick) were used to fabricate multi-path flux core arc welded butt welded joints to clearly consider fatigue fractures at the weld zone from the notch. Fatigue tests were performed under a constant amplitude cyclic loading of R = 0.4. The mean fatigue crack initiation life of the HAZ specimen was the highest among the base metal (BM), weld metal (WM), and heat affected zone (HAZ). In addition, the coefficient of variation was the highest in the WMl specimen. The variability of the short fatigue crack growth rates from the notch tips in the WM and HAZ specimens was higher than in BM.
Narrow gap welding has many advantages over conventional V-grooved butt welding such as high productivity, small deformation and improved mechanical property of joints. With narrower groove gap, less arc heat input is expected will all the other advantages of narrow gap welding. The main defects of narrow gap welding include the lack of root fusion, convex bead surface and irregular surface, all of which have negative effects on the next welding pass. This paper suggests an up-and-down torch oscillation for ultra narrow gap welding with gap size of 5mm and investigates the proper welding conditions to fulfill the reliable and high welding quality. First, GMA welding model was suggested for ultra narrow gap welding system with Halmoy's model referenced for wire melting modeling. And the arc length in ultra narrow gap was defined. Secondly, based on the experimental results of up-and-down torch oscillation welding, phase shift of current and wire extension length were simulated for varying oscillation frequency to show that weld the bead shape in ultra narrow gap welding can be predicted. As the result, it was confirmed that reliable weld quality in ultra narrow gap welding can be achieved with up-and-down torch oscillation above 15Hz due to its ability to provide uniform heat input along the sidewall of gap.
The dynamic fracture toughness, fracture characteristics, impact tension and tensile properties of Al-Mg-Si T5 alloy and Al-Zn-Mg T6 alloy respectively welded with filler metal of Alcan 4043 were investigated. The dynamic fracture toughness values were obtained rapidly and simply for the specimen of small size by using instrumented Chirpy impact testing machine. the testing temperatures of the specimen were a range of room temperature and-196.deg. C. The results obtained in this experiment are summarized as follows. With decreasing the testing temperatures, dynamic tensile stress and fracture load were increased, on the other hand the deflection and impact value showed decreasing tendency in order of base metal>HAZ>weld. Changes of total absorbed energy were more influenced by the crack propagation energy than the crack initiation energy. At the low temperatures, the unstable rapid fracture representing the crack propagation appeared for the specimens of Charpy press side notched in Al-Zn-Mg alloy, but it was difficult to obtain the unstable rapid fracture in Al-Mg-Si alloy. Because of the development of plastic zone at the notch root, it was difficult to obtain thevalid $K_{1d}$ value in Al-Mg-Si alloy. Therefore the fatigue cracked specimens were effective in both Al-Mg-Si and Al-Zn-Mg alloys. With decreasing the impact testing temperatures, specimens underwent a transition from dimple-type transgranular fracture to lamella surface-type intergranular fracture because of the precipitate at the grain boundaries, impurities and crystal structure of the precipitates.s.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the welding distortion of the circular type lap joint in STS304L of 0.7mm thickness by using FEA. In order to do it, a heat input model for GTA welding process with non-consumable electrode was established through comparing the molten pool shapes and temperature distributions obtained by both FEA and experiment. With the heat input model, the welding distortion of the circular type lap joint was evaluated by 3-D FEA. From FEA results, it was found that 3-D FEA with proper heat input model can be used for the evaluation of the excessive distortion of the circular type lap joint of STS304L thin plate. In addition, the root cause of the excessive distortion in the weld was also identified as the excessive compressive residual stress in the tangential direction of the weld.
Because the quantitative relationships between welding parameters and welding result are not yet blown, optimal values of welding parameters for $CO_2$ robotic arc welding is a difficult task. Using the various artificial data processing methods may solve this difficulty. This research aims to develop an expert system for $CO_2$ robotic arc welding to recommend the optimal values of welding parameters. This system has three main functions. First is the recommendation of reasonable values of welding parameters. For such work, the relationships in between the welding parameters are investigated by the use of regression analysis and fuzzy system. The second is the estimation of bead shape by a neural network system. In this study the welding current voltage, speed, weaving width, and root gap are considered as the main parameters influencing a bead shape. The neural network system uses the 3-layer back-propagation model and a generalized delta rule as teaming algorithm. The last is the optimization of the parameters for the correction of undesirable weld bead. The causalities of undesirable weld bead are represented in the form of rules. The inference engine derives conclusions from these rules. The conclusions give the corrected values of the welding parameters. This expert system was developed as a PC-based system of which can be used for the automatic or semi-automatic $CO_2$ fillet welding with 1.2, 1.4, and 1.6mm diameter the solid wires or flux-cored wires.

The present work reports the mismatch limit loads for a V-groove welded pipe for a circumferential crack using finite element (FE) analyses. To integrate the effect of groove angles on mismatch limit loads, one geometry-related slenderness parameter was modified by relevant geometric parameters including the groove angle, crack depth, and root opening based on plastic deformation patterns in the theory of plasticity. Circumferential through-wall cracks are located at the centre of the weldments with two different groove angles ($45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$). With regard to the loading conditions, axial (longitudinal) tension and bending are applied for all cases. For the parent and weld metal, elastic-perfectly plastic materials are considered to simulate and analyze under- and over-matching conditions in plasticity. The overall results from the proposed solutions are found to be similar to the FE results.

This paper investigates the distribution of stress and its behavior at the Root Toe in fillet welding joint. Furthermore, the stress components and principal stresses in the fillet welds are calculated by the finite element method. The distribution of stresses obtained numerically by means of the finite element method is also compared with the experimental results of two dimensional photoelasticity. A Cover plate type and Center block type of fillet welds are used as models for the numerical calculations covering the variations of 2 W/M(thickness of main plate/thickness of cover plate)=1 through 2W/M=4. The results obtained in these studies are summarized as follows; 1) When W2/M values become small, the stress concentration factors of the Root are larger than of the Toe in a C-type. Its critical value is 2W/M=3.00. However, no critical value exists in a T-type. 2) For 2W/M Values being avove 3.5 in a C-type and above 4.0 in a T-type, $K_R$ and $K_{\tau}$ become 1. 3) According to the differences of 2W/M values, the differences in stress become increasing in the Root but become decreasing in the Toe. These differences, however, disappear as the free boundary surface is approached. 4) The stress concentration factors of both the Root and Toe obtained by means of the finite element method have somewhat lower values than obtained by the photoelasiticity. But their principal stress directions coincide in either method. 5) It proves beneficial to employ the finite element method for two-dimensional plane stress analysis in front fillet welding joint.
When U-ribs of steel deck plates are connected at the field, overhead welding should be done with backing strips. Misalignments may occur and lead to eccentric moments as well as high stress concentrations at welded joints. In this study, stress analyses and fatigue tests were carried out. Stress analyses for U-ribs' welded joints with backing strips were performed with different misalignments, root shapes, root gaps, and backing strip sizes. From the stress analyses, the stress concentration factors increased with increasing misalignments and root gaps. With the fixed misalignments and root gaps, the stress concentration factors obtained in the case of the semi-circle root shape were lower than those in the case of the right-angle root shape. It was verified that backing strip sizes have little influence on stress concentration factors. The fatigue tests for U-ribs' welded joints with backing strips indicated that increased misalignments shorten fatigue life drastically and cracks usually initiate at the root of the base metal and are propagated to the weld bead surface. Based on the results of the stress analyses, root-shape control methods were developed to mitigate stress concentration by changing welding condition control, radius curvature, and flank angle.
