  • WFQ (Weighted Fair Queuing) provides not only fairness among traffic flows in using bandwidth but also guarantees the Quality of Service (QoS) that individual flow requires, which is why it has been applied to the resource reservation protocol (RSVP)-capable router. The RSVP allocates an enough resource to satisfy both the rate and end-to-end delay requirements of the flow in the condition of no packet loss, and the WFQ scheduler guarantees those QoS requirements with the allocated resource. In practice, however, most QoS-guaranteed services allow a degree of packet loss, especially from 0.1% to 3% for Voice over IP. This paper discovers that the packet loss rate of each traffic flow is determined by only its time-stamp adjustment value, and then enhances the WFQ to provide a differentiated packet loss guarantee under general traffic conditions in terms of both traffic characteristics and QoS requirements. The performance evaluation showed that the proposed WFQ could increase the utilization of bandwidth by 8~11%.

The RSVP allocates an enough resource to satisfy both the rate and end-to-end delay requirements of the flow in condition of no packet loss, and the WFQ guarantees those QoS requirements with the allocated resource. In a practice, however, most QoS-guaranteed services, specially the Voice of IP, allow a few percent of packet loss, so it is strongly desired that the RSVP and WFQ make the best use of this allowable packet loss. This paper enhances the WFQ to allow packet loss and investigates its performance. The performance evaluation showed that allowing the packet loss of 0.4% can improve the flow admission capability by around 40 percent.

  • In existing wireless ad-hoc networks, how to distribute network resources fairly between many users to optimize data transmission is an important research subject. However, in wireless mesh networks (WMNs), it is one of the research areas to avoid gateway bottleneck more than the fair network resource sharing. It is because WMN traffic are concentrated on the gateway connected to backhaul. To solve this problem, the paper proposes Weighted Fairness Time-sharing Access (WFTA). The proposed WFTA is a priority time scheduling scheme based on Weighted Fair Queuing (WFQ).

  • Fair bandwidth allocations at routers protect adaptive flows from non-adaptive ones and may simplify end-to end congestion control. However, traditional fair bandwidth allocation mechanisms, like Weighted Fair Queueing and Flow Random Early Drop, maintain state, manage buffera and perform packet scheduling on a per-flow basis. These mechanisms are more complex and less scalable than simple FIFO queueing when they are used in the interi or of a high-speed network. Recently, to overcome the implementation complexity problem and address the scalability and robustness, several fair bandwidth allocation mechanisms without per-flow state in the interior routers are proposed. Core-Stateless Fair Queueing and Rainbow Fair Queuing are approximates fair queueing in the core-stateless networks. In this paper, we proposed simple Layered Fair Queueing (SLFQ), another core-stateless mechanism to approximate fair bandwidth allocation without per-flow state. SLFQ use simple layered scheme for packet labeling and has simpler packet dropping algorithm than other core-stateless fair bandwidth allocation mechanisms. We presente simulations and evaluated the performance of SLFQ in comparison to other schemes. We also discussed other are as to which SLFQ is applicable.

  • In this paper we study the delay patterns of voice traffic for end-to-end users Caused by serving the whole bunch of applications traffic at the same time on the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network. Given the current situation that voice traffic is served along with other application services on the VoIP network, it is quite necessary to figure out how and by what the voice traffic requiring high QoS is delayed. We compare the delay performance of voice traffic on the VoIP network under FIFO with the one under Weighted Fair Queuing(WFQ), and discover the differences of the delay performance resulting from the use of different voice codec algorithms. The results of our study show that using the voice codec algorithm with a higher coding rate nd the queuing algorithm of WEQ can provide users with high-quality voice traffic.

  • This paper proposes an efficient technique to protect e-mail server from DDoS attack using the CBQ (Class Based Queuing) algorithm The proposed method classifies incoming trafic to an e-mail server into three classes: 'more important mail traffic', 'less important traffic' and 'unknown traffic' and assigns bandwidths differently to the traffics. By differentiating the bandwidths of classes, normal mail traffic may flow even under DDoS attack in the proposed technique. The proposed technique is implemented on an embedded system which hires a switching processor with the WFHBD(Weighted Fair Hashed Bandwidth Distribution) engine that has been known as an efficient algorithm to distribute a given bandwidth to multiple sources, and it is verified that it can be an efficient way to protect e-mail server from DDoS attack.

  • Proportional Fair (PF) share policy has been adopted as a downlink scheduling scheme in CDMA2000 l×EV-DO standard. Although It offers optimal performance in aggregate throughput conditioned on equal time share among users, it cannot provide a bandwidth guarantee and a strict delay bound. which is essential requirements of real-time (RT) applications. In this study, we propose a new scheduling policy that provides quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees to a variety of traffic types demanding diverse service requirements. In our policy data traffic is categorized Into three classes, depending on sensitivity of Its performance to delay or throughput. And the primary components of our policy, namely, Proportional Fair (PF), Weighted Fair Queuing (WFQ), and delay-based prioritized scheme are intelligently combined to satisfy QoS requirements of each traffic type. In our policy all the traffic categories run on the PF policy as a basis. However the level of emphasis on each of those ingredient policies is changed in an adaptive manner by taking into account the channel conditions and QoS requirements. Such flexibility of our proposed policy leads to offering QoS guarantees effectively and. at the same time, maximizing the throughput. Simulations are used to verify the performance of the proposed scheduling policy. Experimental results show that our proposal can provide guaranteed throughput and maximum delay bound more efficiently compared to other policies.

  • Recently, WBAN(Wireless Body Area Network) which has progressed standardization based on IEEE 802.15.6 standardization is a network for the purpose of the short-range wireless communications within around 3 meters from the inner or outer human body. Effective QoS control technique and data efficient management in limited bandwidth such as audio and video are important elements in terms of users and loads in short-range wireless networks. In this paper, for high-speed WBAN IEEE 802.15.6 standard, the dynamic allocation to give an efficient bandwidth management and weighted fair queueing algorithm have been proposed through the adjustment of the super-frame about limited data and Quality of Service (QoS) based on the queuing algorithm. Weighted Fair Queueing(WFQ) Algorithm represents the robust performance about elements to qualitative aspects as well as maintaining fairness and maximization of system performance. The performance results show that the dynamic allocation expanded transmission bandwidth five times and the weighted fair queueing increased maximum 24.3 % throughput and also resolved delay bound problem.

  • Traffic flows of real-time multimedia services such as Internet phone and IPTV are bounded on the end-to-end delay. Packets violating their delay limits will be dropped at a router because of not useful anymore. Service providers promise the quality of their providing services in terms of SLA(Service Level Agreement), and they, especially, have to guarantee the packet loss rates listed in the SLA. This paper is about a method to guarantee the required packet loss rate of each traffic flow keeping the high network resource utilization as well. In details, it assures the required loss rate by adjusting adaptively the timestamps of packets of the flow according to the difference between the required and measured loss rates in the lossy Weighted Fair Queuing(WFQ) scheduler. The proposed method is expected to be highly applicable because of assuring the packet loss rates regardless of the fluctuations of offered traffic load in terms of quality of services and statistical characteristics.
