In present study we focused on the weed occurrence and diversity in rice field according to methods of weed control. Experiments comprised of no herbicide treatment (NHT), herbicide treatment (HT) and golden apple snail treatment (GAST) within the three months (July to September) of growing rice. According to results, five to seven different weed species were found in NHT, while two to four different weed species were found in HT and GAST. Monochoria vaginalis was dominant species during growing period in NHT and HT while Lemna paucicostata was the dominant in July but Persicaria hydropiper was dominant for August and September. Simpson's dominance index was highest in GAST(0.96) compared with other treatments (NHT 0.27 and HT : 0.51). The similarity coefficient was 50.31%, 4.65% and 0.38% for NHT versus HT, NHT versus GAST and HT versus GAST, respectively. In conclusion, the weed species diversity, dominance and similarity coefficient were varied in different weed control methods of rice growing.
This study was conducted in order to investigate the distribution pattern of weeds and ecological characteristics on the dry field in the Eastern region of Korea. The weed species data were obtained from 12 regions in Gangwon-do and Gyeongsang-do. 150 taxa were recorded from three main distinguished habitats; inside of dry field (IDF), embankment around the end of dry field (EDF), levee slope of dry field (LS). The weed species of three different habitats were IDF 83 taxa, EDF 133 taxa and LS 105 taxa. The species showing higher rNCD value was Portulaca oleracea in IDF, Digitaria sanguinalis in EDF and Humulus japonicus in LS. Compositae was dominant family followed by Gramineae, Polygonaceae and Leguminosae. Life form was distinguished as Th-R5-D4-e and three different habitats showed the same results. Disturbance index was analysed as IDF 83.1%, EDF 68.4%, and LS 62.9%. Naturalized rate was analysed as IDF 28.9%, EDF 22.6%, and LS 20.0%. These results indicate that the weeding management, land use intensity, and human interference effect on the distribution index and naturalized rate of weed.
Weed flora and floristic composition were reviewed in lowland rice field and upland crop area. For lowland rice field weed flora was not much changed since 1971. About 29 weed species belonged to 18 families were occurred. However, floristic composition of dominant weed species has greatly changed mainly due to introduction of herbicides. The predominant weed species in 1971 when herbicide was not used were Rotala indica, Eleocharis acicularis, Monochoria vaginalis, Echinochloa crus-galli, while these for in 1991 were Eleocharis kuroguwai, Sagittaria pygmaea, S. trifolia, Echinochloa crus-galli and M, vaginalis, respectively. In 1981 weed survey, E. crus-galli was no longer troblesome weed. However, this species became important again thereafter by introduction of herbicide mixtures with pyrazolate, bensulfuron-methyl or pyrazosulfuronethyl. For upland crop area, 216 weed species belonged to 46 families were recorded. One hundred and sixtyfive of these were grown in winter crop area while 189 weed species occurred in summer crop area, respectively. Among these, 138 weed species were grown in both crop seasons. In general, summer crops had less number of weed species compared to winter crops. Even though the dominant weed species varied by crop the most common weeds were Chenopodium album, Alopecunrs aqualis, Stellaria alsine and S, media for winter crops and Digitaria sanguinalis, Portulaca oleracea, Chenopodium album and Acalypha australis for summer crops, respectively.

The weed survey in lowland rice field in 1992 was conducted to identify weed population change as affected by different elevation, soil type and cultivation pattern at Gangweon province. There were more perennial weeds in plain and east coastal area while more annual weeds in mid alpine and alpine area. Meanwhile, perennial weed species was more dominant at ordinary and sandy soil but annual weed species was more dominant at poorly drained soil. In general, hand and machine(30 day old seedling) transplanting would result in higher dominant weed species of perennial while there was more annual weed species in machine (10 day old seedling) transplanting and dry seeding, respectively. Also, annual weed species was more predominant at spring plowing time compared to autumn plowing time. Particularly, there was change in dominant weed species with time. In 1971 annual weed species was more predominant but perennial weed species was highly dominant in 1981 and 1992.
Herbicidal effects and crop selectivity of aqueous leaf extracts of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) were evaluated against several weed species for developing sustainable weed management in organic farming. Aqueous sorghum leaf extracts were highly phytotoxic to different weed species. No broadleaf weeds were germinated in the concentration of 5 fold or higher concentrated sorghum leaf extracts and 90% of seed germination was inhibited within that range in grass species. Sorghum leaf extracts strongly inhibited the growth of different weeds by pre-emergence and foliar applications in greenhouse condition. Foliar application of sorghum leaf extracts had a higher inhibitory effect than the pre-emergence application. Broadleaf weed species were more susceptible than grasses to the application of sorghum leaf extract in foliar applications than grasses. Galium spurium, Erigeron candensis, and Rumex japonicus were completely killed at the highest concentrated sorghum leaf extract both in pre-emergence and foliar application. Most broadleaf weed species were inhibited more than 80% at pre-emergence application at 50 fold concentrated sorghum leaf extract. G. spurium, E. candensis, R. japonicus, Eclipta alba, Plantago asiatica and Portulaca oleraeea were most susceptible to sorghum leaf extract in foliar application. Growth of most broad leaf weed species was suppressed by greater than 90% at 50 fold concentrated sorghum leaf extract. Most crop species were tolerant to sorghum leaf extract but shoot growth was slightly reduced by the application of 40~50 fold concentrated extracts, Sorghum leaf extract may used to control weeds in organic fanning without affecting the growth of crop.
In order to establish the chemical weed control systems in orchard, efficacy of glyphosate and paraquat with oxyfluorfen, simazine and alachlor were evaluated in pear and peach orchards. Dominant weed species existed before glyphosate or paraquat application were Artemesia princeps, Calystegia japonica, Erigeron canadensis, and Lepidium apetalum, but Digitaria sanguinalis was one of the most dominant weeds throughout growing season of fruit trees. Gtyphosate at 120g/10a followed by oxyfluorfen at 04g/10a drastically reduced number of weeds and fresh weight of weeds and was found to be the most effective method for controlling weeds in orchard. Paraquat at 100g/10a followed by oxyfluorfen at 117g/10a and sequential application of glyphosate at 120g/10a also provided good weed control.

This study was conducted to investigate the change of weed community on paddy-upland rotation in 1996. In paddy-upland rotation, dominant weed species in paddy condition were Cyperous amuricus, Echinochloa crus-galli, Rotara indica and Lindernia procumbens. They were E. crusgalli, Digitaria sanguinalis and C. amuricus in upland condition. The number of weed occurrence on paddy and upland rotation reduced about 74-78% as compared with continuous paddy and upland condition. Similarity coefficient and Simpson index on paddy and upland rotation was 8-64, 0.34-0.35, respectively.
The research was carried out in tray in greenhouse equipped with Auto Foggy Systems(SAE KI RIN Co.) and the results were summarized as follows. 1. The number of leaves and fresh weight of Chinese cabbage were not different, but the plant height was increased due to foggy condition. 2. Plant height was decreased in 40 and 60 days of weed competition by foggy condition, the number of leaves was not different. And, shoot fresh weight was decreased by in all the duration of weed competition under foggy condition. Especially, that was greater in 40 days. 3. The shoot fresh weight was decreased by pendimethaline and napropamide application under foggy condition. Also, the number of leaves was decreased at 60 days after transplanting by pendimethaline application under foggy condition. 4. Pendimethalin, napropamide and alachlor treatments were not different in the weeding efficacy between non-foggy and foggy conditions. Trifluraline showed lower weeding efficacy by seedling emergence of large crabgrass as the days of treatment got longer under foggy condition.
The allelopathic effects of rice and barley straws on lettuce germination and weed growth were investigated. The grinded straw of rice significantly inhibited lettuce germination. Both rice and barley straws decreased weed growth when they were used as a mulch in the field. Rice straw mulch applied with 500g/$m^2$ and 700g/$m^2$ decreased dry weight of Alopecurus aequalis more than 35%. Barley straw mulch applied with 200 g/$m^2$ inhibited dry weight of Echinochloa curs-galli and Digitaris sanguinalis, while the straw applied with 300 g/$m^2$ decreased those by 97%.
In spite of simple and cheap cultivation method, water broadcast-seeded rice demonstrates uneven and unstable seedling establishment per unit land area and requires more herbicide and labor-input for weed control. Three experiments were conducted in a phytotron at 18$^{\circ}C$ to evaluate the adaptability of seed-mat mulching cultivation technologies in water seeded rice for the uniform seedling establishment and the inhibition of weed occurrence without herbicide application. Five different kinds of mat with different mesh sizes and fabric properties were tested. The emergence of rice was the highest in Lawn-mat treatment, being comparable with the control, in which seeds were sown without mat. The Lawn-mat also exhibited the lowest mat tension. Mat tension may influence the emergence of rice. And once it was soaked in water, it didn't maintain its original shape any more. The emergence rate of rice was the lowest in Safer-mat treatment. In Lawn-mat treatment, which was the most effective for rice emergence in the first study, the differences of emergence and seedling establishment of rice depending on the seeding position (upper, beneath, and between mats) treatments were negligible, while they were higher in dry seeds than in pre-germinated seeds treatment. The emergence as affected by the kinds of mat also showed the same trend when tested using barnyard grass. Depending on the kinds of mat, the inhibition effect of weeds was the greatest in Safer-mat and the poorest in Lawn-mat. These results strongly suggest the possibility that the uniform seedling establishment and weed management without chemical could be achieved simultaneously by seed-mat mulching through the combination of effective mat for the emergence of rice and another efficient mat for the inhibition of weed occurrence. This possibility was also tested in the field.
