Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between unhealthy eating behavior and depression in adolescents, with confounding variables adjusted. Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of the data collected from the 2013 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBWS). The analysis included 72,435 participants (36,655 male and 35,780 female). The data were analyzed by $x^2$ test, t-test, and logistic regression analysis using SPSS Version 21 by complex samples analysis. Results: Compared with male adolescents with healthy eating behavior, those who with unhealthy eating behavior were more likely to suffer depression with other factors controlled (OR=1.37, 1.07~1.75). On the other hand, female adolescents with unhealthy eating behavior were less likely to feel depressed compared with female adolescents with unhealthy eating behavior and with other factors controlled (OR=0.98, 0.64~1.50). However, it was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that healthy eating behavior may be a protective factor against depression in male adolescents, but not in female adolescents. Furthermore, our results suggest that the longitudinal associations between mental health and healthy eating behavior and other lifestyle factors are complex.

Objectives: To investigate the association of problematic Internet use with oral health behaviors and oral health status in a nationally representative sample of Korean adolescents. Methods: Data from the 2010 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (73238 Korean adolescents; mean age $15.06{\pm}1.75years$; age range, 12-18 years) were used. Problematic Internet use was measured using the Korean Internet Addiction Proneness Scale for Youth-Short Form. Self-report questionnaires were used to assess oral health behaviors and oral health status of adolescents. Results: Problematic Internet users were less likely to brush their teeth frequently [adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=0.59; 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.56-0.63] and at school after lunch (AOR=0.89; 95% CI=0.83-0.94) as well as more likely to perceive their oral health to be poorer (AOR=1.63, 95% CI=1.54-1.72) and experience oral symptoms (AOR=1.75, 95% CI=1.65-1.86) compared to usual Internet users. Conclusion: The study results indicate that problematic Internet use may adversely affect the oral health of Korean adolescents. Thus, oral health screening and Internet-based education are needed for adolescents experiencing problematic Internet use.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between demographic characteristics, health factors, oral health factors and subjective body shape perception of adolescents in order to provide basic data for adolescents health management. Methods: This study was analyzed using Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey in 2015, where 68,043 adolescents in total participated. Data were analyzed by SPSS Ver. 21.0. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the relationships among health factors and oral health factors related to subjective body shape perception. Results: The analysis of the factors influencing the body shape perception of male adolescents showed that they tend to be low in school performance, low in family economic level, and high school students. The worse they perceive their subjective health to be, the more they feel stress, and the less frequently they brush their teeth per day. They had bad breath. The analysis of the factors influencing the body shape perception of female adolescents showed that they tend to be low in school performance, low in family economic level, and high school students. The worse they feel their subjective health is, the more they feel unhappy, and stressful, and the less frequently they brush their teeth per day. They feel pain during chewing, and have bad breath. Conclusions: In conclusion, it is necessary to consider educational intervention in adolescent life that will make them have proper perception of their body shape for proper health management of it. To make the intervention effective, we need to consider various factors such as health factors and oral health factors.

Objectives: There is an increasing number of North Korean adolescents in South Korea. These adolescents need clinical attention as they experience a high risk of suicidal behavior because of the childhood adversity and acculturative challenges that they face before and after arriving in South Korea. This study assessed the risk of suicide attempts among North Korean adolescents compared to South Korean adolescents, and investigated the contributing factors for each group. Methods: We used data from the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey (KYRBS) spanning 2011 to 2018, in which 404 adolescents had a father and/or mother who was a North Korean native. Data on 1,212 propensity-matched South Korean adolescents were extracted from the 2011 to 2018 KYRBS. Prevalence was calculated and compared by group. Separate odds ratios were calculated by group. Results: The North Korean group had a significantly higher suicide attempt rate [unadjusted odds ratio (OR)=8.27; adjusted OR=8.45]. Multivariate analysis indicated that having a low or high socioeconomic status and depressive symptoms were significantly associated with suicide attempts in North Korean adolescents, while being female, having a high socioeconomic status, alcohol use, and depressive symptoms were significantly related to suicide attempts in South Korean adolescents. Conclusion: The results found similarities and differences in the factors associated with the likelihood of suicide attempts in the two groups. From these results, different approaches are needed when planning interventions for each group.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship of personal hygiene education and hand-washing practices among adolescents. Then the impact of such factors on the hand-washing practices was analyzed. Methods: The data of the 2012 Youth Health Risk Behavior web-based Survey collected by Korean Center for Disease Control was analyzed using SPSS. Total 74,186 of middle and hish school students were included. Uni-variate analysis was done by complex sample crosstabs and multi-variate analysis was done by complex sample logistic regression. Results: The 26.8% of students experienced personal hygiene education. The students of boys, low school grade, coeducation, metropolitan, high school record and high economic status experienced more hygiene education. The hand-washing practices were high in the students with the experience of personal hygiene education. In the factors affecting the hand-washing practice, the experience of personal hygiene education was consistently significant. If students experienced the personal hygiene education, they showed 20~30% more rates of hand-washing practices. Conclusions: Hand-washing practice was high when experiencing personal hygiene education. The personal hygiene education was necessary to improve the rate of hand-washing practices.

This study aimed to determine the association between stress recognition and oral symptom experiences among adolescents. We analyzed it, based on the 14th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2018), using the chi-square test and logistic regression. The distribution rate of stress recognition and oral symptom experience within one year were 81.7% and 48.9%, respectively. The group with stress recognition had a higher rate (52.2%) of oral symptom experience than the group that did not recognize stress (p<0.001). In the stress recognition group, the odds ratio for oral symptom experience was 1.86 (95% CI: 1.78-1.95). We suggest that stress is associated with oral health in adolescents. In the future, it will be necessary to study stress relief and oral health education in adolescents.

Objective : The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in academic and mental health status (generalized anxiety, depression, stress, loneliness, and suicidal thoughts) between adolescents exhibiting normal and excessive smartphone use patterns. Methods : The smartphone use times and academic and mental health status of 51,850 adolescents were analyzed using raw data from the 2022 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey. Descriptive statistics of complex sample analysis, frequency analysis and linear regression analysis were performed. Results : The mean smartphone use time of middle and high school students was 6 hours 43 minutes on weekends and 4 hours 39 minutes on weekdays. There were significant differences in smartphone use time according to gender and grade. As a result of comparing differences in academic status between adolescents with excessive smartphone use times and those with normal use times. In terms of mental health status, adolescents with excessive use times had higher generalized anxiety, depression, stress, loneliness, and suicidal thought scores than adolescents with normal use times. Conclusion : This study can be used as a basic reference for research on smartphone overuse.
The purpose of the study was to investigate mental health and mental health-related factors of adolescents with allergic diseases. Methods: The subjects were 72,060 middle and high school students, the data of whom were extracted from the 2014 Korean Youth' Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. Allergic diseases included asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema. Mental health was measured by indicators such as perceived stress, depression, and suicidal ideation. To compare the mental health of adolescents who have allergic diseases with that of those who don't, the study used ${\chi}^2-test$ and calculated odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). In addition, the study used ${\chi}^2-test$and multiple logistic regression, calculating OR and 95% CI, to analyze the association between mental health and allergic diseases and other variables. Results: Of 72,060 adolescents who participated in the study, 51.6% had allergic diseases(asthma 9.2%, allergic rhinitis 32.2%, eczema 23.9%). And 37.1% reported perceived stress, 26.6% depression, and 13.1% suicidal ideation. The adolescents with allergic diseases, compared to the adolescents without allergic diseases, were 1.26 times, 1.28 times, and 1.29 times more likely to experience perceived stress, depression, and suicidal ideation, respectively. The mental health-related factors of adolescents with allergic diseases were school type, sex, socioeconomic status, and academic performance. Conclusion: The adolescents with allergic diseases had poorer mental health than the adolescents without the diseases. Further studies should be done to verify this. And based on the study's findings, school-based intervention programs for mental health of adolescents with allergic diseases need to be developed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of sleep duration on suicidal ideation in Korean adolescents. Methods: This study used the data drawn from Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey in 2013. A total data of 63,301 adolescents were included in the analysis. Included variables were general characteristics, health status variables, hours of sleep, and suicidal ideation. For sample description weighted percentage and means were used. Rao-Scott ${\chi}^2$ test and simple and multiple logistic regression with dummy variables were conducted with use of SAS 9.2. Results: Among general characteristics and health status variables, gender, grade, school level, school achievement, family's economic status, living with parents, subjective health, happiness, stress, and feeling of despair were found to be significantly related to suicidal ideation. Rates of having suicidal ideation were 22.4% in the case of students with less than 5 hours of sleep and 12.9% in students with 8 or more hours of sleep. After controlling general characteristics and subjectively perceived variables, hours of sleep was still significantly related to suicidal ideation. That is, compared to adolescents with 8 hours or more of sleep, those with less than 5 hours of sleep showed significantly higher risk for having suicidal ideation (adjusted odds ratio: 1.20, p<.001). Conclusion: These findings suggest that short sleep has negative effects on psychological health in adolescents. Particularly, less than 5 hours of sleep has harmful effect on adolescents' increased risk for having suicidal ideation.
