Extracting Logical Structure from Web Documents (웹 문서로부터 논리적 구조 추출)

  • This paper presents a logical structure analysis method which transforms Web documents into XML ones. The proposed method consists of three phases: visual grouping, element identification, and logical grouping. To produce a logical structure more accurately, the proposed method defines a document model that is able to describe logical structure information of topic-specific document class. Since the proposed method is based on a visual structure from the visual grouping phase as well as a document model that describes logical structure information of a document type, it supports sophisticated structure analysis. Experimental results with HTML documents from the Web show that the method has performed logical structure analysis successfully compared with previous works. Particularly, the method generates XML documents as the result of structure analysis, so that it enhances the reusability of documents.

  • Users of World Wide Web (Web) experience difficulties in the retrieval of pertinent information due to the increased information provided by Web sites and the complex structure of Web documents that are continuously created, deleted, restructured, and updated. Web providers' efforts to maintain their sites are tend to be less than that of site creation due to the expenses required for maintenance. If information of relationship among Web documents and their validity is provided to Web managers as well as Web developers, they can better serve users. In order to grasp the whole structure of a Web site and to verify the validity of hyperlinks, traversal and analysis of hyperlinks in a Web document are required to provide information for effective and efficient creation and maintenance of the Web. In this paper, we introduce a Web Editor specialized for Web maintenance. We emphasized on two aspects: first, the analysis of HTML Tags to extract hyperlink information and second, establishment of the relationship among hyperlinked documents, and verification of the validity of them.

  • Recently, WWW(World Wide Web) has become a source of a large amount of information, and is now recognized not only as an information-sharing tool, but also as an information repository. Currently, the majority of documents on the web were created using HTML(Hypertext Markup Language). Although HTML is simple and easy to learn, its inherent lack of describing document structure makes it difficult to retrieve information effectively. One possible solution would be to convert such HTML documents into XML (extensible Markup Language) documents. This is a standard markup language for exchanging data on the web. It can describe a document structure freely by defining its own DTD (Document Type Definition). This makes it possible to integrate, store, and retrieve data on the web efficiently In this paper, we will propose a converter that automatically converts HTML documents with similar pattern into XML documents by analyzing the document structure and recognizing its path information.

An Improved Approach to Ranking Web Documents

  • Ranking thousands of web documents so that they are matched in response to a user query is really a challenging task. For this purpose, search engines use different ranking mechanisms on apparently related resultant web documents to decide the order in which documents should be displayed. Existing ranking mechanisms decide on the order of a web page based on the amount and popularity of the links pointed to and emerging from it. Sometime search engines result in placing less relevant documents in the top positions in response to a user query. There is a strong need to improve the ranking strategy. In this paper, a novel ranking mechanism is being proposed to rank the web documents that consider both the HTML structure of a page and the contextual senses of keywords that are present within it and its back-links. The approach has been tested on data sets of URLs and on their back-links in relation to different topics. The experimental result shows that the overall search results, in response to user queries, are improved. The ordering of the links that have been obtained is compared with the ordering that has been done by using the page rank score. The results obtained thereafter shows that the proposed mechanism contextually puts more related web pages in the top order, as compared to the page rank score.

  • Currently most Internet documents including data are made based on predefined templates, but templates are usually formed only for main data and are not helpful for information retrieval against indexes, advertisements, header data etc. Templates in such forms are not appropriate when Internet documents are used as data for information retrieval. In order to process Internet documents in various areas of information retrieval, it is necessary to detect additional information such as advertisements and page indexes. Thus this study proposes a method of detecting the layout of Web pages by identifying the characteristics and structure of block tags that affect the layout of Web pages and calculating distances between Web pages. This method is purposed to reduce the cost of Web document automatic processing and improve processing efficiency by providing information about the structure of Web pages using templates through applying the method to information retrieval such as data extraction.

Web Structure Mining by Extracting Hyperlinks from Web Documents and Access Logs (웹 문서와 접근로그의 하이퍼링크 추출을 통한 웹 구조 마이닝)

  • If the correct structure of Web site is known, the information provider can discover users# behavior patterns and characteristics for better services, and users can find useful information easily and exactly. There may be some difficulties, however, to extract the exact structure of Web site because documents one the Web tend to be changed frequently. This paper proposes new method for extracting such Web structure automatically. The method consists of two phases. The first phase extracts the hyperlinks among Web documents, and then constructs a directed graph to represent the structure of Web site. It has limitations, however, to discover the hyperlinks in Flash and Java Applet. The second phase is to find such hidden hyperlinks by using Web access log. It fist extracts the click streams from the access log, and then extract the hidden hyperlinks by comparing with the directed graph. Several experiments have been conducted to evaluate the proposed method.

  • XML (extensible Markup Language) is selected and published as a representative standard of electronic documents by W3C (World Wide Web Consortium). The structured information can be created and also transferred in XML documents. By utilizing XML, you can express the meaningful information unit as a structure comparing existed file typed information. With structured information, you can also manage retrieve, and reposit documents. According to the above facts, in this paper, it is the purpose to design and implement XML documents repository system to reposit and retrieve using structured information of XML documents. As a model it was designed to be stored by element unit which is the basic unit of documents and was also designed to retrieve the stored XML information by structured unit. It was, especially, designed to manage and reposit the structure of various documents effectively through creating schema as to DTD(Document Type Definition) and instance.

  • Web Information Systems have many static HTML documents and dynamic CGI application programs. A hyperlinked information environment on Web systems include lots of mutually referenced documents. This cause problems of data consistency in a intra-document and among inter-documents. To solve the problems, we propose a management method of Web system which have hierarchical information structure, and an unified problem-solving approach. We construct a large scale practical Web system based upon the proposed architecture. The proposed results can provide many advantage to WebMasteters.

  • In this study, the wrapper database description language and model is suggested to collect product reviews from Korean shopping malls with multi-layer structures and are built in a variety of web languages. Above all, the wrapper based web crawlers have the website structure information to bring the exact desired data. The previously suggested wrapper based web crawler can collect HTML documents and the hierarchical structure of the target documents were only 2-3 layers. However, the Korean shopping malls in the study consist of not only HTML documents but also of various web language (JavaScript, Flash, and AJAX), and have a 5-layer hierarchical structure. A web crawler should have information about the review pages in order to visit the pages without visiting any non-review pages. The proposed wrapper contains the location information of review pages. We also propose a language grammar used in describing the location information.
