  • This study proposed a new yield function considering the spacing ratio of the critical state to predict the undrained shear behavior of anisotropic field ground. We have suggested a nonassociated constitutive model that used a newly modified plastic potential function in order to apply the yield function of the modified Cam-Clay model to the anisotropic consolidation. In this paper, we predicted undrained shear behavior of the remolded weathered mudstone soils in Phohang isotorpically and anisotropically consolidated using the suggested model. To evaluate the reliability of proposed model, we predictied undrained shear behavior of Bankok Clay isotropically, nomally consolidated and Drammen Clay Ko consolidated. The predicted results are consistent with the observed behavior.

  • Various soil tests were performed in the laboratory after soil samples were obtained from natural terrains distributed on the granitic rocks where are located in Mt. Bukhan, Mt. Surak and Mt. Gwanak around Seoul. Through the comparison of soil properties in each mountain, the difference of soil properties in a similar geological condition was investigated. According to the result of soil test, the soils were generally classified into calyey and silty sands with a well grade. Soil densities are ranged from $2.62kg/cm^3$ to $2.67kg/cm^3$, and water contents of soils are ranged from 3.77% to 31.12%. These values are not sorted locally. The wet unit weights of soils are ranged from $1.092kg/cm^3$ to $1.814kg/cm^3$. It has a big difference between the average values because that of Mt. Bukhan is $1.604kg/cm^3$ and those of Mt. Surak and Mt. Gwanak are $1.500kg/cm^3$ and $1.331kg/cm^3$, respectively. The internal friction angles are ranged from $31^{\circ}$ to $39^{\circ}$ and the cohesions are ranged from 1.57kPa to 8.63kPa. The shear strengths are too high and similar in all regions. The coefficients of permeability are ranged from $3.07{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$ to $4.61{\times}10^{-2}cm/sec$. So, these soils are evaluated as a middle to high permeable ground. On average, the value of Mt. Bukhan is $1.47{\times}10^{-2}cm/sec$ and the values of Mt. Surak and Mt. Kwanak are $1.29{\times}10^{-2}cm/sec$ and $1.66{\times}10^{-2}cm/sec$, respectively.

  • This study analyzes the determination of slope failure model due to changes in ground condition followed by heavy rainfall. With a simulated rainfall system, the movement of a slope from the rainfall penetrating the unsaturated soil is investigated with respect to various conditions of pore-water pressure, earth pressure, and moisture content, considering rainfall duration and permeability. As a result of the experiment, under the persistent precipitation of 50mm/h, pore-water pressure of weathered granite soil started increasing from the upper position of the slope, and then the pressure increased in middle and bottom portion of it in timely manner. In case of the pore-water pressure of the standard soil, the pressure increased from the middle and bottom portion, and the cause of the different order is suspected to be the difference in permeability between the standard soil and the weathered granite soil. As an outcome, though the result may vary by each foundation, there exists a danger of slope failure not only when the cumulative rainfall is more than 120 mm but also when the saturation level amounts to 60~75%.

  • A study was made on crack developments of the nearly building due to rock blasting for road construction at the 623 Common Block near the rear side of the Gamchun Habor. The gelogy of the study area is composed of andesite, which belongs to the Kyungsang System of the Cretaceous Period. For 3 months of blasting events, the vibration velocity data were measured at the site just in front of the K freezing factory. The data were divided into 4 groups according to the period of blasting(i.e, DATA 1, DATA 2, DATA 3 and DATA 4), for deriving K and n values. As a result, DATA 1 shows that K and n were 83.3756 and -0.848, respectively, and then K and n were progressively increased in absolute values for the follow-up groups and the last DATA 4 shows K and n were 2980.4898 and -1.502, respectively. Such differences in K and n values may be due to partly : 1) variations geological characteristics, from the upper rather weathered, fisssuring soft rocks at the earlier stage less weathered and fissuring hard rocks at the later stage of blasting events, and 2) the geometry between the blasting and detecting points.Among the total count of 225 blasting events, the number exceeding the safety limits of 0.5cm/sec was 20(8.9% of the total), the maximum displacement detected at the crack gage was 0.25mm, the level of which is far less to cause the occurrence and development of any cracks to the K factory. Therefore, it was confirmed that there were no damages such as structural failure or safety problem to the building.

  • This study intended to evaluate hydrogeological characteristics in relation to subsurface geology data obtained from borehole, groundwater level, borehole flowmeter test, and field hydraulic tests. The regression equation of groundwater level (Y) versus ground elevation (X) is expressed by Y=0.75X-7.00 with quite high correlation coefficient of 0.78. Relationship between groundwater level and thickness of landfill, alluvium, and weathered zone results in higher correlation of groundwater level (Y) versus natural log value of weathered tone (A) than other correlations, with the regression equation Y= exp(9.974A)-14.155. The result of groundwater flow measurement in the boreholes indicates that groundwater flows towards between south and southwest, and this approximately agree with regional distribution of groundwater levels.

  • Seismic refraction and electrical resistivity surveys were conducted in Bangeosan Maaebul site located in Haman, Kyungnam, in order to present geophysical safety analysis method for masonry cultural properties. Seismic refraction exploration revealed that the ground was composed of three layers in term of seismic wave velocity; the upper, medium, and lower layers. The low velocity ranging from 308 to 366 m/sec in upper layer suggests weathered soil, the intermediate velocity from 1906 to 2090 m/sec in the medium layer indicates weathered rocks, and the high velocity from 5061 to 5650 m/sec in the lower layer implies extremely hard rocks. Our seismic result suggests that the upper and medium layer around the Maaebul should be reinforced to support the construct. The result of electric resistivity survey shows that there exists a low resistivity zone, ranging from 131 to 226 Ohm-m, at the right side of the Maaebul with the direction of NE-NNE. This area is the weakness zone as it plays role of the underground water passage in rainy season.

  • Mechanical behavior of underground cavity construction such as tunnel is very difficult to estimate due to complexity and uncertainty of ground. Prediction of behavior according to excavation of tunnel mainly uses method utilized of model test or numerical analysis. But scale model test is difficult to reappear field condition, numerical analysis is also very hard to seek choice of suitable constituent model and input data. To solve this problem, this paper forecasted the deformation of tunnel that applied to information of crown settlement and convergence, RMR in weathered granite by using the regression analysis. The result of the analysis shows that the crown settlement according to excavation occurs approximately 70~80% of total displacements within about 20 days. As a result of the prediction of crown settlement and convergence, an exponential function becomes more accurate at measurements than an algebraic function. Also this paper got a correlation in comparison of RMR and displacements of 6 sections.

  • Every year in domestic slope failure caused by rainfall is happening frequently. Specially, causable failure accident by localized downpour accompanied when summer rainy season period and produces typhoon gets damage of large scale human life and property. Failure happened at slope of 121 places ranged whole country national highway by No.15 typhoon Rusa that strike whole country during 3 days from August 30, 2002. Slope failure that happen by typhoon are judged for major cause to effect of ground saturation and surface water by localized downpour. In this research, failure characteristic was analyzed to target 20 places attaining site investigation among failure slope. As a result, erosions by surface water was construed for major cause of failure and judged for direct relation in failure slope weathering and topography Also, result that analyze inclination of failure part, in the case of ripping rock, inclination of failure side is forming Incline of the lowest 40$^{\circ}$, because surface failure of depth 4m on or so scale happened, it is require that regulating plan gently design standard inclination of weathered rock and soil layer And it is considered that desirable preparation of design standard about measure that help smooth drainage of surface water and can restrain percolation in ground to reduce failure damage by rainfall.

  • We investigated the weathering characteristics of On-Yang gneiss by means of geological survey and Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR). The results of geological survey and boring show the two sets of vertical joint and horizontal joint developed by foliation which is composed of salic and melanic layers. GPR section evidently shows foliation direction and differential weathering due to discontinuity and mineral composition of metamorphic rock. The GPR section for instantaneous phase attribute based on complex trace analysis evidently shows continuity and foliation direction of metamorphic rock. The strong reflection amplitude which is derived from the banded structure of weathered rock can be incorrectly interpreted as a reflection of bedrock. The depth of rock basement should be estimated from the overall exploration result such as boring, seismic method, and electrical resistivity method.

  • Among various construction methods, deep soil stabilization by chemical method have been widely used in order to improve soft ground. Dynamic variables using ground(such as sand, weathered granite soil and rock) -structure interaction design affected by dynamic load and cyclic load were studied a lot. However, there is something yet to learn about earthquake resistant design regarding reinforced ground by grout. Therefore, in this study using RC test, the correlation between shear strain and shear modulus with change of water content and injection rate in normal portland cement and clay was compared and analyzed by using Ramberg-Osgood model normalization As the result, dynamic coefficient was considerably affected by water content and grout injection rate.
