Although NAND flash-based SSD (Solid-State Drive) provides superior performance in comparison to HDD (Hard Disk Drive), it has a major drawback in write endurance. As a result, the lifetime of SSD is determined by the workload and thus it becomes a big challenge in current technology trend of such as the shifting from SLC (Single Level Cell) to MLC (Multi Level cell) and even TLC (Triple Level Cell). Most previous studies have dealt with wear-leveling or improving SSD lifetime regarding hardware architecture. In this paper, we propose the optimal configuration of host I/O stack focusing on file system, I/O scheduler, and link power management using JEDEC enterprise workloads in terms of WAF (Write Amplification Factor) which represents the efficiency perspective of SSD life time especially for host write processing into flash memory. Experimental analysis shows that the optimum configuration of I/O stack for the perspective of SSD lifetime is MinPower-Dead-XFS which prolongs the lifetime of SSD approximately 2.6 times in comparison with MaxPower-Cfq-Ext4, the best performance combination. Though the performance was reduced by 13%, this contributions demonstrates a considerable aspect of SSD lifetime in relation to I/O stack optimization.

Recently, NAND flash memory, which is used as a storage medium, is replacing HDD (Hard Disk Drive) at a high speed due to various advantages such as fast access speed, low power, and easy portability. In order to apply NAND flash memory to a computer system, a Flash Translation Layer (FTL) is indispensably required. FTL provides a number of features such as address mapping, garbage collection, wear leveling, and hot data identification. In particular, hot data identification is an algorithm that identifies specific pages where data updates frequently occur. Hot data identification helps to improve overall performance by identifying and managing hot data separately. MHF (Multi hash framework) technique, known as hot data identification technique, records the number of write operations in memory. The recorded value is evaluated and judged as hot data. However, the method of counting the number of times in a write request is not enough to judge a page as a hot data page. In this paper, we propose hot data identification which considers not only the number of write requests but also the persistence of write requests.
Flash memory, which replaces hard disk recently, has different physical characteristics with hard disk. For the performance of flash memory based storage system, many researches over OS and file system layers has been doing. In this paper, we propose the architecture of flash memory based storage which uses information of page invalidation when file deletion occurs from upper layer. Also, we evaluate the performance of proposed system. Proposed system effectively increases IO performance by using page invalidation information to block merge and wear leveling algorithms.
Application of flash memory in mobile and ubiquitous related devices is rapidly being increased due to its low price and high performance. In addition, some notebook computers currently come out into market with a SSD(Solid State Disk) instead of hard-drive based storage system. Regarding this trend, applications need to increase the storage capacity using multiple flash memory chips for larger capacity sooner or later. Flash memory based storage subsystem should resolve the performance bottleneck for writing in perspective of speed and lifetime according to its physical property. In order to make flash memory storage work with tangible performance, reclaiming of invalid regions needs to be controlled in a particular manner to decrease the number of erasures and to distribute the erasures uniformly over the whole memory space as much as possible. In this paper, we study the performance of flash memory recycling algorithms and demonstrate that the proposed algorithm shows acceptable performance for flash memory storage with multiple chips. The proposed cleaning method partitions the memory space into candidate memory regions, to be reclaimed as free, by utilizing threshold values. The proposed algorithm handles the storage system in multi-layered style. The impact of the proposed policies is evaluated through a number of experiments.

Flash Memory which is light and strong external shock as storage of small electronics like smartphone, digital camera, car black box has been widely used. Since the operation speed of the read operation and the write operation are different from each other, and the flash memory has the feature that it is not possible to overwrite, the delete operation is added to solve these problems. Wear-leveling must also be considered, since the number of erase times of the flash memory is limited. Many studies have been conducted on the substitutional algorithms of flash memory based on these characteristics of recent flash memories. So, to solve the problem that has existing buffer replacement algorithm this thesis divide page into 6 groups and when proposed algorithm select victim page, it consider reference page frequency and page recency.

Nonvolatile memory (NVM) is being considered as an alternative of traditional memory devices such as SRAM and DRAM, which suffer from various limitations due to the technology scaling of modern integrated circuits. Although NVMs have advantages including nonvolatility, low leakage current, and high density, their inferior write performance in terms of energy and endurance becomes a major challenge to the successful design of NVM-based memory systems. In order to overcome the aforementioned drawback of the NVM, extensive research is required to develop energy- and endurance-aware optimization techniques for NVM-based memory systems. However, researchers have experienced difficulty in finding a suitable simulation tool to prototype and evaluate new NVM optimization schemes because existing simulation tools do not consider the feature of NVM devices. In this article, we introduce a NVM-based cache simulator to support rapid prototyping and evaluation of NVM-based caches, as well as energy- and endurance-aware NVM cache optimization schemes. We demonstrate that the proposed NVM cache simulator can easily prototype PRAM cache and PRAM+STT-RAM hybrid cache as well as evaluate various write traffic reduction schemes and wear leveling schemes.

NAND flash memory-based file systems cannot store their system-related information in the file system due to wear-leveling of NAND flash memory. This forces NAND flash memory-based file systems to scan the whole flash memory during their mounts. The mount time usually increases linearly according to the size of and the usage pattern of the flash memory. NAND flash memory has been widely used as the storage medium of mobile devices. Due to the fact that mobile devices have unstable power supply, the file system for NAND flash memory requires stable recovery mechanism from power failure. In this paper, we present design and implementation of a new NAND flash memory-based file system that provides fast mount and enhanced stability. Our file system mounts 19 times faster than JFFS2's and 2 times faster than YAFFS's. The stability of our file system is also shown to be equivalent to that of JFFS2.

NAND flash memory has advantages of non-volatility, little power consumption and fast access time. However, it suffers from inability that dose not provide to update-in-place and the erase cycle is limited. Moreover, the unit of read and write operations is a page. A NAND flash file system called YAFFS has been proposed. But YAFFS has several problems to be addressed. In this paper, the Reliable Flash File System(RFFS) for NAND flash memory is designed and evaluated. In designing a file system the following four issues must be considered in particular for the design: (i) to minimize a repairing time when the system fault occurs, (ii) to balance the number of block erase operations by offering wear leveling policy, and (iii) to reduce turnaround time of memory operations by reducing the amount of data written. We demonstrate and evaluate the performance of the proposed schemes.
Popularity of smartphones such as Google Android phones and Apple iphones, is increasing the demand on more reliable high performance file system for flash memory. In this paper, we propose two techniques to improve the performance of YAFFS (Yet Another Flash File System), while enhancing the reliability of the system. Specifically, we first propose to manage metadata and user data separately on segregated blocks and indexing information piggy-back technique for reducing mount time and also enhancing performance. Second, we tailor the wear-leveling to the segregated metadata and user data blocks. Performance evaluation results based on real hardware system with 1GB NAND flash memory show that the YAFFS with our proposed techniques realized outperforms the original YAFFS by six times in terms of mount speed and five times in terms of benchmark performance, while reducing the average erase count of blocks by 14%.
