Carbon nitride coatings on the substrates of 0.55wt% C - 1.68wt% Mn induction-hardened rolling elements were prepared by ion beam assisted deposition. It was found through metallographic observation that the carbon nitride coatings appeared lamellar-type repeated layers parallel to the surface of substrate. Surface roughness of the coated specimens was improved in comparison with that of the substrates. Wear resistance of the coatings was evaluated using Polymet RCF-1 machine with a constant supply of lubricant followed by Weibull statistical analysis and scanning electron microscopy. the results indicated failure due to old-age wear-out of the coatings was mainly caused by numerous micropits formed on the wear track during repeated rolling contact.
In the present study, the residual stresses can have a significant on the life of structural engineering components. Residual stresses are created by the surface treatment such as shot peening or deep rolling. The objective of this experimental investigation is to study the influence of friction and wear characteristics due to residual stress under dry sliding condition. Friction and wear data were obtained with a specially designed tribometer. Test specimens were made of SUP9 (leaf spring material) after they were created residual stress by shot peening treatment. Residual stress profiles were measured at surface by means of the Xray diffraction. Sliding tests were carried out different contact pressure and same sliding velocity 0.035 m/s (50 rpm). Leaf spring assembly test used to strain gauge sticked on leaf spring specimen in order to measure interleaf friction of leaf spring. Therefore, we were obtained hysteresis curve. As the residual stresses of surfaces increased, coefficient of friction and wear volume are decreased, but the residual stresses of surfaces are high, and consequently wear volume do not decreased. Coefficient of friction obtained from leaf spring assembly test is lower than that obtained from sliding test. From the results, structural engineering components reduce coefficient of friction and resistant wear in order to have residual stresses themselves.

This study applies various surface patterns to minimize material loss in construction equipment that is subject to severe wear due to sand, such as the wear-resistant steel plates of dump trucks or the teeth of excavators. The relationship between surface morphology and wear behavior is investigated using PLA+ polymer to observe the effect of the surface pattern. Five types of samples - smooth, concave, convex, wavy concave, and wavy convex designs - are created using a 3D printer. A wear experiment is conducted for a duration of 3 h using 6.5 kg of abrasive particles. The mass loss of the samples after the experiment is measured to assess the extent of wear. Additionally, the surface morphology of the samples before and after the experiment is analyzed using SEM and confocal microscopy. The study results reveal that the smooth design exhibits the highest wear loss, whereas the concave and wavy concave designs show relatively lower wear loss. The convex and wavy convex designs exhibit varying contact areas with the abrasive particles depending on the surface pattern, resulting in different levels of wear. Furthermore, a comparison between the experimental results and DEM simulations confirms the observed wear trends. This study reveals the relationship between wear damage according to surface pattern shape and is expected to be of substantial help in the analysis of wear and tear on agricultural and heavy equipment.

The effects of alloying elements on the structure and mechanical properties of compacted/vermicular graphite cast irons containing copper, tin and molubdenum for producing pearlite matrix, and also containing phosphorus and boron for increasing wear resistance, were investigated. The Brinell hardness and ultimate tensile strength of the specimens with the range of compositions, [1.5% Cu-0.05% Sn-(0.2-0.4)% Mo-(0.2-0.6)% P-(0.035-0.070)% B], was found to fall within in the following range, depending on their composition; Brinell hardness of BHN 250-315, ultimate tensile strength of $28.1-40.3kg/mm^2$. It was also found within this experiment that CV graphite cast irons possessing higher amount of phosphide eutectic exhibit better wear resistance, but the wear resistance became deteriorate when the area fraction of phosphide eutectics exceed more than 10%. From these experimental results, it could be concluded that the CV graphite cast iron containing 1.5% Cu, 0.05% Sn, 0.4% Mo, 0.2% P and 0.035% B showed good mechanical and wear resistance properties.
Wear resistant titanium nirridc(TiN) coatings Were depositecd onto bearing stcel(AISI 52100) by plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition using the gaseous mixtyre of $TiCI_4, N_2, H_2$ and Ar. The In- fluences of the choorine on the crystallinity, microhardness, adhesion. Wear. property of coatings were studied. It was found that the TiN coatings had an outstanding resistance to wear but the mechanical properties of the coatings deteriorated with the increase in the chlorine content. From wear test, many cracks in the trailing edge which was under tensile stress was investigated.

($Ti_{1-x}$$Cr_{x}$ )N coatings were deposited by an ion-plating method in a reactor with two separate metal sources, Ti and Cr. Ti was evaporated using an electron beam, while Cr evaporation was carried out by resistant heating. The Ti and Cr concentrations in the coatings were controlled by the Ti and Cr evaporation ratio. The coating hardness increased with increasing the Cr content(x) and showed a maximum value of 6,000 HK at around x=0.8. The critical load of the coatings, measured by the scratch test, was around 30 N. The wear resistance properties of the ($Ti_{1-x}$$Cr_{ x}$)N coatings were evaluated using a CSEM pin-on-disk type tribometer. A Cr-steel ball as well as a SiC ball, which had hardness values of 590 HK and 2,600 HK respectively, were used as the pin. After the wear test, the surface morphology, roughness and the concentration of the coatings were investigated, with the main focus being on the effect of wear debris and the transferred layer on the wear behavior.
In this work we investigated the friction and wear characteristics of a magnesium alloy, which has been receiving much attention as a light metal in industrial applications such as automobiles and aerospace. Magnesium is one of the lightest structural material that has high specific strength, lightweight, low density and good formability. However, current issue of using magnesium alloy is that magnesium has weakness against temperature. As the temperature increases, magnesium undergoes poor creep resistance and ease of softening, and therefore, its mechanical strength decreases sharply. To solve this issue, a new type of magnesium alloy that retains high strength at high temperature has been proposed. The tribological behavior of this alloy was investigated using a tribotester with reciprocating motion and heating plate. A stainless steel ball was used as a counter surface. Results showed that extrusion process has similar wear behavior to the commonly used casting process but retains good mechanical strength and durability. The presence of an alloying element enhanced the wear properties especially in high temperature. This study is expected to be utilized as fundamental data for the replacement of high density materials currently used in mechanical industries to a much lighter and durable heat-resistant materials.
Hydrogen has emerged as an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. However, the utilization of hydrogen requires high-pressure compression, storage, and transportation, which poses challenges to the durability of compressor components, particularly the diaphragm. This study aims to improve the durability of 304 stainless steel diaphragms in hydrogen compressors by optimizing their surface roughness and corrosion resistance through wet etching. The specimens were prepared by immersing 304 stainless steel in a mixture of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide, followed by etching in hydrochloric acid for various durations. The surface morphology, roughness, and wettability of the etched specimens were characterized using optical microscopy, surface profilometry, and water contact angle measurements. The friction and wear characteristics were evaluated using reciprocating sliding tests. The results showed that increasing the etching time led to the development of micro/nanostructures on the surface, thereby increasing surface roughness and hydrophilicity. The friction coefficient initially decreased with increasing surface roughness owing to the reduced contact area but increased during long-term wear owing to the destruction and delamination of surface protrusions. HCl-30M exhibited the lowest average friction coefficient and a balance between the surface roughness and oxide film formation, resulting in improved wear resistance. These findings highlight the importance of controlling the surface roughness and oxide film formation through etching optimization to obtain a uniform and wear-resistant surface for the enhanced durability of 304 stainless steel diaphragms in hydrogen compressors.

Micron size Co-alloy 800 (T800) powder is coated on the high temperature, oxidation and corrosion resistant super alloy Inconel 718 substrate by the optimal high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coating process developed by this laboratory. For the study of durability improvement of high speed spindle operating without lubricants, friction and sliding wear behaviors of the coatings are investigated both at room and at an elevated temperature of $1000^{\circ}F(538^{\circ}C)$. Friction coefficients, wear traces and wear debris of coatings are drastically reduced compared to those of non-coated surface of Inconel 718 substrate both at room temperature and at $538^{\circ}C$. Friction coefficients and wear traces of both coated and non-coated surfaces are drastically reduced at higher temperature of $538^{\circ}C$ compared with those at room temperature. At high temperature, the brittle oxides such as CoO, $Co_{3}O_{4}$, $MoO_2$ and $MoO_3$ are formed rapidly on the sliding surfaces, and the brittle oxide phases are easily attrited by reciprocating slides at high temperature through oxidation and abrasive wear mechanisms. The brittle solid oxide particles, softens, melts and partial-melts play roles as solid and liquid lubricants reducing friction coefficient and wear. These show that the coating is highly recommendable for the durability improvement coating on the machine component surfaces vulnerable to frictional heat and wear.
A slider of the pantograph undergoes uneven and abnormal wear due to sliding contact with the catenary. In the case of rain, the loss of lubricant increases the frictional resistance for the reciprocating motion between the catenary and the slider, accelerating local wear. The slider in the winter should have good wear resistance, which can be achieved through alloy design. Uneven and abnormal wear were not observed in the results of a driving test using a wear resistant slider. It was found that the increased density of the slider enhanced the corrosive effects of Fe-Ti, preventing the occurrence of abnormal wear by maintaining the wear and arc resistance in the rainy season. Also, mechanical and electrical wear did not affect the composition of the slider, and this improved the wear resistance. Inaddition, the slider was applied to an entire train and was tested during driving; ananalysis of the correlation of the catenary was performed, including during the rainy season and the winter season.
