Finite Element Simulation on Prediction of an Asymmetric Hot Forging Die Life Based on Wear (마멸에 기초한 비대칭 열간단조 금형수명 예측에 관한 유한요소 시뮬레이션)

  • The main cause of die failure in hot forging is wear. Die wear directly generates the gradual loss of part tolerances, thereby causing deterioration in the dimensional accuracy of a forged part. It is very important to estimate forging cycles, called as die life, at which the die should be repaired or replaced. In this study, in order to estimate the hot forging die life, the finite element simulation of wear on an asymmetric part like a ball joint socket used in vehicle was carried out based on Archard's model. Finite element simulation results were compared with wear amounts of a used die that were measured using a contact stylus profilometer. The simulation results were in relatively good agreement with measurements obtained from the virtual die which was used by 7,000 forging cycles in a forging industry. Consequently, the die life in the hot forging of the ball joint socket was estimated by 10,500 forging cycles on the finisher die.

  • This paper presents the friction and wear characteristics of contact type sealing unit for a water turbine of a small hydro-power generation, which Is to stop a leakage of a circulating water from a outside of an impeller to an inside of a rolling bearing. The surface wear strongly affect to the seal life of a mechanical face seal. In this study, the hardness of a stainless steel in which is a heat-treated is 892.8 in Vickers hardness and the hardness of silicone carbide of SiC is 714.1 in Vickers hardness. The surface hardness of a heat-treated stainless steel is 25% high compared with that of a ceramic material of SiC. The contact modes of rubbing surfaces aye a dry friction a water film friction and a mixed friction that is contaminated by a dust, silt and moistures, etc. These two factors of a contact rubbing modes and a material property are very important parameters on the tribological performance such as a friction and wear between a seal ring and a seal seat. The experimental result shows that the surface hardness of a seal material is very important on the friction coefficient and a wear volume. Thus, the results recommend higher hardness of a seal material, which may reduce a friction loss and increase a wear life of primary seal components

  • This study has been carried out to investigate the wear and heat resistant properties of durable moldwash agent for Al gravity casting according to mold washing process conditions. The wear properties of coated specimen were performed by sliding wear testing machine and heat resistance were evaluated by measuring the loss of coated moldwash agent during emerging of coated specimen in Al melts. During testing, experimental variables were mold surface temperature, moldwash agent/distilled wear, and additive concentrations. The lower additive concentration and mold temperature caused the smooth surface roughness of coated specimen, It was found that the specimen coated with moldwash/water ratio 1:3, additive concentration 9wt% and mold temperature higher than $200^{\circ}C$ showed superior wear and heat treatment. Also, these results were supported by fluidity test.

  • Recently, international attention has been focused on the development of non-traditional energy resources such as shale gas and oil sands, due to the steep increase in the demand for natural resources. The materials incorporated in an oil gas plant module experience extreme environments, and are prone to various problem such as fracture, corrosion and abrasion due to low-temperature brittleness. In order to improve the plant life, it is necessary to perform characteristics study and performance evaluation of the materials. In particular, this paper explains the main set of materials which are most frequently used in oil sands plant project. In order to investigate wear characteristics, the authors carried out abrasive wear tests of TP 316, stainless steel and SS 400, structural rolled steel. For the analysis of the abrasive wear resistance of an oil sands plant, the authors carried out the test according to ASTM G 105 "Standard Test Method for Conducting Wet Sand/Rubber Wheel Abrasion Test" standard guidelines. The authors have derived the results from the data associated with the loss of mass with respect to wear rate. During the test, for a given wear length for 10,000 revolutions, the rotational speed and applied force of the rubber wheel were varied.

  • This study was carried out to verify grinding performance of dental diamond bur and investigate the possibility of AE application in dentistry field. Workpieces were made of acryl and bovine respectively for the experiments in this study. Grinding test was conducted to get the data of grinding resistance and specific grinding energy of four different types of diamond bur by using tool dynamometer. AE signal was acquired to verify grinding process in the AE measuring system. Tool wear was observed to find parameters about grinding characteristics of diamond bur by means of SEM picture. It was found that the wear of dental diamond bur could be detected with polishing of grinding material, removal of adhesive parts, wear of particles neighboring cutting nose, loss of material and elevation of temperature. The wear of B, C, D type diamond bur is due to wear and fracture of grain size. Abnormal state can be found through the behavior of AE signal in the grinding working. As a result, it is expected that forecast of abnormal state is possible using AE equipments under real time process.

  • This study is on wear damage of the material for a molding machine that be used at finally cutting of metal beam made in roll forming process of vehicle bump beam process line. SKD11 steel was used with the material for cutting mold jig. In the cutting mold jig, Ti diffusion heat treatment after vacuum heat treatment was carried out for upgrade of surface hardness and anti-wear. Also, the heat treatments by various methods were performed to compare the wear damage degree against above the existing heat treatment. Wear loss and friction coefficient were obtained from wear test. And, micro Vickers hardness values were compared with damaged parts or not of cutting mold jig. Micro Vickers hardness value appeared higher at the undamaged part by Ti diffusion heat treatment. The micro Vickers hardness well followed a two-parameter Weibull probability distribution.

A STUDY ON WEAR RESISTANCE OF FLOWABLE COMPOSITE RESINS (유동성 복합레진의 마모저항성에 관한 연구)

  • When we use the flowable resin on the primary molars for quick handling, one of the most important property is the wear resistance. This study was performed to compare the wear resistance characteristics of four flowable composite resins [Arabesk flow (group 1), Tetric flow (group 2), Aeliteflow (group 3), Filtek flow (group 4)] to that of one control composite resin [Z100 (group 5)]. Specimen discs(n=10), 10mm wide and 2mm thick, were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 7 days prior to testing. The specimens were subjected to 50,000 strokes at 2 Hz on the MTS system. During the test, the following parameters were maintained: the lateral excursion at 0.4mm, occlusal force at 2-100N with a force profile in the form of a half sine wave. The measurements of volume loss, depth of wear, and Vicker's hardness number of composite resins, and SEM observations of the polished and abraded surfaces were established. One-way ANOVA and Scheffe's multiple comparison test were employed to detect statistically significant differences among the flowable composite resin groups and the control composite group at P<.05.   • The friction and wear between machine components directly influence the energy loss and failure in various machines. Therefore, there is always a demand for finding methods to reduce friction and wear. Of the possible methods, lubrication is a widely used method for reducing friction and wear. In the case of lubrication, it is important to analyze the tribological behavior in the boundary lubrication because most of friction and wear occurs in the boundary lubrication regime. Cast iron has been regarded as a good material for industrial applications due to the excellent mechanical properties and high productivity. Especially, nodular cast iron is a material that shows better mechanical properties and wear-resistance compared with cast iron due to inclusion of spheroidal graphite. In this work, we investigated the tribological characteristics of nodular cast iron with respect to different counter parts in boundary lubrication regime. Sliding tests were conducted with SUJ2, ZrO2, Si3N4 balls as counter parts using a pin-on-disk type tribotester. The results showed different friction and wear behaviors with different counter parts. The case of ZrO2 showed the lowest wear rate in specimen and no significant ball wear. In case of SUJ2, it showed similar wear rate with ZrO2 case in specimen and the highest friction coefficient. The case of Si3N4 showed the lowest friction coefficient, 33% lower than the case of SUJ2. It showed 16.9 times larger wear rate in specimen and 43% larger wear rate in ball compared to that of the SUJ2 case.

A Study of Clothings for Cold Prevention -Protective Effects of Vinyl Sheet against Wind- (피복(被服)의 보온효과에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) -비닐의 방풍효과를 중심(中心)으로-)

  • Three Combinations of cloths were evaluated for the protective effects of different kinds of clothings in cold environments. Table 1 shows the components of the three models of clothings. A prototype was made by putting a sheet of vinyl at the middle layer of raw cotton in a fabric-quilt cloths. A glove mannequin was covered by each of these cloths. The globes contained 1,000 cc of hot water about $40^{\circ}C$. Tele-thermistors were fixed in order to check the temperature of cloths space and water temperature for evaluation of calorie-loss and climate of clothings. Results are summarized as follows: 1) Without wind, there is no significant difference of air temperatures between sti-parka and quilt-wear clothing. 2) The prototype with vinyl sheet best protects against wind, the next is the ski-parka. Quilt-wear protects the least. 3) It is well-known that a working-clothing needs not have any separate liners nor outers. 4) For innermost layer of a clothing preventing cold, a cotton-fabrics is recommended and a water-proof cloths for outer layer. 5) Heat-loss was calculated from the cooling degrees of water. Calorie-loss was $910cal/m^2/hr$. when bared, but with the prototype of vinyl sheets the calorie-loss was $350cal/m^2/hr$. (38.5% of bared). Quilt-wear and ski-parka were 380(41.8%) and $440cal/m^2/hr$. (48.4%) respectively.

COMPARISON OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES IN 4 INDIRECT COMPOSITE RESIN (4종의 간접법용 복합 레진의 기계적 특성 비교)

  • Statement of problem: The esthetic component of dental care has become increasingly more important, while new tooth-colored materials are continually marketed. Various new indirect composite materials have been developed with required advantages. The most recent development in the indirect composites has been the introduction of the second-generation laboratory composite or poly-glass materials. They are processed by different laboratory techniques based on combinations of heat, pressure, vacuum and light polymerization. Although, second generation products became available in 1995, their characteristics and clinical performance have not been adequately investigated. Purpose: The aim of this study was to measure the mechanical properties of the second generation indirect resin system and compare these with an existing universal direct composite resin. Material and method: In this study four indirect composite material (Adoro LC, BelleGlass HP, Tescera, Synfony) were tested for flexural strength, wear resistance, hardness and their degree of conversion against Z250, a light cure direct composite. Results: Within the limitations of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. From the abrasion wear result, Adoro showed the least volume loss while Synfony showed the greatest volume loss. Z250 and BelleGlass HP didn't show significant difference (p>0.05), but they showed significant difference with other groups (p<0.05). From the attrition wear, BelleGlass HP showed the least volume loss and it didn’t show significant difference with Tescera (p>0.05). While Synfony showed the greatest volume loss that it showed significant difference with other groups (p>0.05). 2. Mean values of flexural strength by means of three point bending test was in the order of Z250, Adoro, Belleglass HP, Tescera and Synfony. Mean elastic modulus was in the order of Z250, BelleGlass HP, Tescera, Adoro and Synfony. 3. The result of Vicker‘s microhardness value showed that significantly higher value in Z250 (p<0.05), and is in the order of BelleGlass HP, Tescera, Adoro and Synfony. 4. The degree of conversion measured by FT-IR showed significantly higher value in BelleGlass HP (p<0.05), and is in the order of Adoro, Synfony, Tescera and Z250. Conclusion: Significant differences were found in the flexural strength, wear resistance, hardness and their degree of conversion.
