Wear Behavior of Al/SiC Composites Fabricated by Thermal Spray Process (1) - Effect of Sliding Speed on Wear Behavior - (용사법에 의해 제조된 Al/SiC 복합재료의 마모거동 (1) - 미끄럼 속도의 영향 -)

  • Al/SiC composites were fabricated by thermal spray process, and the dry sliding wear tests were performed using the various sliding speed of 10, 30, 60 and 90 RPM through 1000 cycles. The applied load was 10 N and radius of wear track was 15 mm. Wear tracks on the Al/SiC composites were investigated using scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). In the case of sliding speed of 10 RPM, adhesive wear behavior caused by plastic deformation of composits surface was observed. In the cases of sliding speed of 30, 60, 90 RPM, abrasive wear behavior on the adhered layer formed by debris were observed. Through this study, it was found that the wear behavior of Al/SiC composites was mainly influenced by the sliding speed.

  • It is reported that $\varepsilon$ (HCP) and $\gamma$ (FCC) phases of a Fe-17Mn alloy transform to $\alpha'$ phase, which has BCC structure, under a deformation condition. In this study, we investigated the effect of strain-induced-transformed $\alpha'$ phase on sliding wear of the Fe-17Mn alloy that originally had e and y phases. Wear tests of the materials were carried out using a pin-on-disk wear tester at various loads of 0.5N-50N under a constant sliding speed condition of 0.38m/s against glass $(83\%\;SiO_2)$ beads. The sliding distance and radius were loom and 9 mm, respectively. Wear rate of the Fe-17Mn alloy was calculated by dividing the weight loss, measured to the accuracy of $10^{-5}g$ by the measured specific gravity and sliding distance. Worn surface and wear debris of the specimens were examined using an SEM and XRD. During the wear, $\alpha'$ phase of BCC structure was formed by strain-induced transformation when the applied wear load exceeded critical values. The $\alpha'$ phase formed by the strain induced transformation increased the wear rate of the Fe-17Mn alloy.

  • It was observed that the friction coefficient decreased with increasing Si concentration in the l ilms. Furthermore, the friction behavior became more s때ble even when very small amount of S Si of less than 0.5 at. % was incorporatA:회 By analyzing the composition of the debris f formed, we could show that the low and stabilized friction coefficient is in마nately relatA:었 w with the formation of the Si rich oxide debris. These result supports the mechanism that the h hydrated silica debris is the reason for low friction coefficient in humid environment. Second e evidence of the role of Si rich oxide debris could be found in the triOO-chemical reactions d during initial stage of triho-test. When the Si concen$\sigma$ation was less than 5 at.%, initial t transient period of high friction coefficient was commonly observed. Mter the transient period, m the friction coefficient becomes lower with increasing contact cycles. The initial $\sigma$ansient p peri여 becomes shorter and the starting and maximum friction coefficients in $\sigma$ansient 야,riod d decreased with increasing Si concentration. Composition of the debris on the wear scar s surface was analyzed by Auger spe따'Oscopy at v뼈ous stages in the initial transient period. W We observed that when the friction coefficient increased in earlier stage of the $\sigma$'ansient p period, iron and oxygen was observed in the debris. However, decrease in the 당iction c coefficient in the later stage of the transient period was associated with the formation of s silicon rich oxide debris. This result also supports the friction mechanism of Si-DLC films t that the formation of Si rich oxide debris results in low friction coefficient in ambient a atmosphere. atmosphere.

  • Sliding friction and wear tests for silicon nitride(Si$_3$N$_4$) was carried out with a ball-on-disk specimen configuration. The material used in this study was HIPed silicon nitride. The tests was carried out from room temperature to 1000"I with self mated couples of slicon nitride in laboratory air.   • In this work the surface damage mechanism of hard disk was investigated. Experiments were peformed to simulate the contact during start and stop. Evidence of significant surface damage appeared after 20,000 cycles. It was found that despite higher hardness, the slider showed more signs of damage than the disk. Optical microscopy showed that the surface was damaged by abrasive action as well as adhesion of wear debris.

  • Dry sliding wear behavior of low carbon dual phase steel, of which microstructure consists of hard martensite in a ductile ferrite matrix, has been investigated. The wear characteristics of the dual phase steel was compared with that of a plain carbon steel which was normalized at $950^{\circ}C$ for 30min and then air-cooled. Dry sliding wear tests were carried out using a pin-on-disk type tester at various loads of 1N to 10N under a constant sliding speed condition of 0.2m/sec against an AISI 52100 bearing steel ball at room temperature. The sliding distance was fixed as 1000m for all wear tests. The wear rate was calculated by dividing the weight loss measured to the accuracy of $10^{-5}g$ by the specific gravity and sliding distance. The worn surfaces and wear debris were analyzed by SEM, EDS and a profilomter. Micro vickers hardness values of the cross section of worn surface were measured to analyze strain hardening behavior underneath the wearing surfaces. The were rate of the dual phase steel was lower than the plain carbon steel. Oxidation on the sliding surface and strain hardening were attributed for the higher wear resistance of the dual phase steel.

High Temperature Wear of STD 61 Tool Steels Sliding Against Al-9%Si Coated Steels Used for Hot Press Forming (STD 61 공구강과 상대재인 핫 프레스 가공용 Al-9%Si 코팅강의 고온 미끄럼 마모)

  • High temperature wear of STD 61 tool steels sliding against the Al-9%Si coated steels used for hot press forming has been studied in comparison with that of the tool steels sliding against the uncoated steels. Wear tests have been performed using a pin-on-disc configuration under an applied normal load of 50N for 20 min with heating the coated and uncoated steels up to 800$^{\circ}C$. It was found on the worn surface of the STD 61 tool steels sliding against the Al-9%Si coated steels that the formation of the glazed layers containing Al transferred from the coated tribopair may contribute to a reduction of the coefficient of friction, and detachment in part occur due to delamination wear, resulting in higher specific wear rate. On the other hand the Fe-oxide wear debris entrapped on the softer surface of the uncoated steels can act as a tribosurface, leading to decreased adhesive wear of the STD 61 tool steels, resulting in a lower specific wear rate.

  • The friction and wear properties of carbon-carbon composites made with different weight percent of $MoSi_2$ as an oxidation inhibitor were investigated using a constant speed wear test apparatus in an oxidation environment. The results indicated the carbon-carbon composites undergoing an abrupt transition of friction coefficient, from low-friction behavior(${\mu}$=0.15~0.2) during normal wear regime to the high-friction behavior(${\mu}$=0.5~0.6) during dusting wear regime at the frictional temperature range of 150~180${\circ}C$. The existence of temperature-dependent friction and wear regimes implied that the performance of specimen made with carbon-carbon composites was markedly affected by the thermal properties of the composites. The carbon-carbon composites filled with MoSi2 exhibited two times lower coefficient of friction and wear rate in comparison with the composites without $MoSi_2$. Especially, the composites containing 4wt% $MoSi_2$ filler showed a significantly improved activation energy for wear due to the reduction of both the porosity and powdery debris film formation on sliding surface when compared to those without $MoSi_2$.

Wear of UHMWPE Pins Against Ti-alloy and Stainless Steel Disks Moving in Two Kinematic Motions (두가지 기구운동을 하는 타이타늄 합금과 스테인레스 스틸 디스크에 대한 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌 핀의 마멸)

  • The wear behaviors of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene pins against titanium alloy and stainless steel disks moving in two different kinematic motion were investigated by conducting repeat pass rotational sliding and linear reciprocal sliding wear tests. Linear reciprocal motion wore more the polyethylene pin than did repeat pass rotational motion for both disk materials. It means that the repeated directional change of contact stresses generates more wear debris in polyethylene. For the linear reciprocal sliding tests, titanium alloy disks were damaged with some scratches after one million cycles but no surface damage was observed on the polyethylene pins. On the other hand, fur the repeat pass rotational sliding tests, all titanium alloy disks were severely abraded on the entire region of sliding track. This phenomenon can be interpreted by that stress fatigue under repeated sliding contact initiated titanium oxide layer wear particles from disk surface, and these hard particles were embedded into polyethylene pin and then they severely abraded the disk surface. From these results it can be concluded that the kinematic motion in pin-on-disk wear tests play a crucial role on the wear behaviors of UHMWPE pins against titanium alloy and stainless steef discs.
