The aim of this study was to compare wear resistance of resin denture teeth opposing various restorative materials. The wear resistance of conventional acrylic resin teeth(Trubyte Biotone) and three high-strength resin teeth(Bioform IPN, Endura, SR-Orthosit-PE) opposing different restorative materials(gold alloys, dental porcelain, composite resin) was compared. Wear tests were conducted with a sliding-induced wear testing apparatus which applied 100,000 strokes to the specimen in a mesio-distal direction under conditions of 100 stroke/min and constant loading of 1Kgf/tooth. Wear resistance of the resin denture teeth was evaluated by the following criteria : 1) wear depth, 2) weight loss, and 3) SEM observation. Results were as follows. 1. When opposed to gold alloys and composite resin, high-strength resin teeth showed superior wear resistance compared to acrylic resin teeth. But, in cases opposing dental porcelain, differences between the wear of the high-strength and acrylic resin teeth were not statistically significant (p<0.05). 2. When comparing wear resistance among high-strength resin teeth, opposing gold alloys, Endura was slightly more resistant and while in cases opposing dental porcelain, SR-Orthosit-PE was showed to be slightly resistant(p<0.05). 3. The wear of high-strength resin teeth was greater by 5 to 7 times when opposing porcelain and 2 to 3 times when opposing composite resin compared to gold alloys(p<0.05). 4. SEM observations of the wear surface showed that wear of resin teeth opposing gold alloys is a fatigue type of wear and wear of resin teeth opposing dental porcelain is fatigue and abrasion type of wear. Trubyte Biotone showed more severe fatigue type of wear than high-strength resin teeth. In conclusion, the use of dental porcelain should seriously be considered as restorative material in cases opposing resin denture teeth and improvement seems to be needed on resin teeth in the areas of wear resistance.
The friction and wear behaviors of magnetron sputtered MoS$_2$ films were investigated through the use of a pin and disk type tester. The experiments were performed for two kinds of specimens (ground (Ra 0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$) and polished (Ra 0.01 $\mu\textrm{m}$) substrates) under the following operating condifions : linear sliding velocities in the range of 22~66 mm/s (3 types), normal loads varying from 9.8~29.4 N(3 types) and atmospheric conditions of air, medium and high vacuum (3types). Silicon nitride pin was used as the lower specimen and magnetron sputtered MoS$_2$ on bearing steel disk was used as the upper specimen. The results showed that low friction property of the MoS$_2$ films could be identified in high vacuum and the specific wear rate in air was much higher than that in medium and high vacuum due to severe oxidation. It was found that the main wear mechanism in air was oxidation whereas in high vacuum accumulation of plastic flow and adhesion, were the main causes of wear.

Dry sliding wear behavior of ultra-fine grained (UFG) plain low carbon dual phase steel, of which microstructure consists of hard martensite in a ductile ferrite matrix, has been investigated. The wear characteristics of the UFG dual phase steel was compared with that of a coarse grained dual phase steel under various applied load conditions. Dry sliding wear test were carried out using a pin-on-disk type tester at various loads of 1N to 100N under a constant sliding speed condition of 0.20m/s against an AISI 52100 bearing steel ball at room temperature. The sliding distance was fixed as 1000m for all wear tests. The wear rate was calculated by dividing the weight loss, measured to the accuracy of 10-5g by the specific gravity and sliding distance. The worn surfaces and wear debris were analyzed by SEM, EDS and profilometer. Micro-vickers hardness of the cross section of worn surfaces were conducted to analyze strain hardening underneath the contact surfaces. The wear mechanism of the UFG dual phase steel was investigated with emphasis on the unstable nature of the grain boundaries of the UFG microstructure.

Boron nitride (BN) is a highly attractive material for wear resistant applications of mechanical components. BN is super hard and it is the second hardest of all known materials. It also has a high thermal stability, high abrasive wear resistance, and in contrast to diamond, BN does not react with ferrous materials. The motivation of this work is to investigate the tribological properties of BN for potential applications in ultra-precision components for data storage, printing, and other precision devices. In this work, the wear characteristics of BN thin films deposited on DLC or Ti buffer layer with silicon substrate using RF-magnetron sputtering technique were analyzed. Wear tests were conducted by using a pin-on-disk type tester and the wear tracks were measured with a surface profiler. Experimental results showed that wear characteristics were dependent on the sputtering conditions and buffer layer. Particularly, BN coated on DLC layer showed better wear resistant behavior. The range of the wear rates for the BN films tested in this work was about 20 to $100{\mu}m^3$/cycle.

The sliding wear behaviors of three different compositions of novel low temperature degradation-free zirconia/alumina (LTD-free Z/A) composites were examined in a ceramic-ceramic contact pair. The wear tests were performed by using a pin-on-disk type wear tester in a linear reciprocal sliding motion with a line contact in both dry and bovine serum lubricated conditions at room temperature. From the results of dry sliding wear tests, Z/A#1((5.3Y, 4.6Nb)-TZP/80 $vol\%Al_2O_3$) showed the best wear resistance among three kinds of LTD-free Z/A composites. For the bovine serum lubricated sliding wear tests, wear was too little to be measured for all kinds of Z/A composites. These novel LTD-free Z/A composites having excellent wear resistance demonstrated a potential as the alternative materials for the ceramic-ceramic contact pairs of femoral head and acetabular liner in total hip replacement.

The minimization of valve and seat insert wear is a critical factor in the pursuit of engine performance improvement. In order to achieve this goal, we have developed a new simulator, which can generate and control high temperatures up to $900^{\circ}C$ and various speeds up to 80Hz during motion, just like an actual engine. The wear simulator is considered to be a valid simulation of the engine valve and seat insert wear process with various speeds during engine activity. The objective of this work focuses on the different degrees of wear from two different test speeds (10Hz & 25Hz). For this study, the temperature of the outer surface of the seat insert was controlled at $350^{\circ}C$, the cycle number was 2.1$\times$106, and the test load was 1960N. The wear depth and surface roughness were measured before and after the testing using a confocal laser scanner. It was found that a higher speed (25Hz) causes more wear than a lower speed (10Hz) under identical test conditions (temperature, cycle number and test load). In the wear mechanism adhesive wear, shear strain and abrasive wear could be observed.

Analyzing working conditions with shape characteristics of wear debris in a lubricated machine, it can be effect on diagnosis of hydraulic machining system. And it can be recognized that results are processed threshold images of wear debris. But, in order to predict and estimate a working condition of lubricated machine, it is need to analysis a shape characteristic of wear debris and to identify. Therefor, If shape characteristics of wear debris are identified by computer image analysis and the neural network, it is possible to find the cause and effect of wear condition. In this stud)r, wear debris in the lubricant oil are extracted by membrane filter $(0.45{\mu}m)$, and the quantitative value of shape characteristic of wear debris are calculated by the digital image processing. This morphological information are studied and identified by tile artificial neural network. The purpose of this study is to apply morphological characteristic of wear debris to prediction and estimation of working condition in hydraulic machining systems.
In this research, I would like to choose sliding distance and ventilated hole number which affect to the amount of wear of disk and pad as experiment conditions of 'the amount of wear' through wear test of motorcycle brake disk. Also, I analyze the amount of wear according to the variation of coefficient of friction by using design of experiment that is being widely used in diverse areas. With the tests of least, I present the correlation of each experiment condition. Therefore, I analyzed the variation of the amount of wear of disk and pad according to test factors such as ventilated hole number, applied load, sliding speed, and sliding distance in wear test of motorcycle brake disk by applying the design of experiment. Also, I analyzed quantitatively the influence of test factors through Taguchi Robust experimental design, response surface and examined the most suitable level and estimation of the amount of wear of disk. From these, I reached the following conclusions. response surface design, mathematical model was constructed about amount of wear of disk and pad. The amount of wear that decrease according to increase of ventilated hole number, and it's increase according to Increase of applied load, sliding speed, and sliding distance.
The interaction between wear and corrosion can significantly increase total material losses in water chemistry environment. The corrosive wear tests of a PWR steam generator tube material (Alloy 690) against the anti vibration bar material (409 SS) were performed at room temperature. The tests were performed in alkaline water chemistry conditions. NaOH solution was selected for test condition to investigate the corrosive wear effect of steam generator tube material in alkaline pH condition without other factors. The flow induced vibration can caused tube damage and the corrosion can be occurred by water chemistry. The test results showed that, in the alkaline solution at pH 13.9, the corrosion current density was increased about ten times than that in the distilled water. And wear rate at pH 13.9 was increased about ten times from that at neutral condition. However, the wear rate was decreased with time. The decrease would be attributed to the change in roughness of specimen or sub-layer of the worn surface with time. From microstructure observation, severe abrasive shape and several wear debris were found. From those results, it could infer that the oxide film on Alloy 690 changed to easily breakable one in the alkaline water, and then abrasion with corrosion became the main wear mechanism.

The objective of this study is to predict the roll wear in hot rod rolling process. In this study hot rod rolling process for round and oval passes has been investigated. In order to predict the roll wear, the wear model is reformulated as an incremental form and then wear depth of roll is calculated at each deformation step on contact area using the results of finite element analysis, such as relative sliding velocity and normal pressure at contact area. Archard's wear model was applied to predict the roll wear. To know the thermal softening of DCI (Ductile Cast Iron) roll according to operating conditions, high temperature micro hardness test is executed and a new wear model has been proposed by considering the thermal softening of DCI roll expressed in terms of the main tempering parameter curve. 3D wear program developed in this study might be used for adjusting the gap of rolls to set up a suitable rolling schedule for keeping dimensional tolerance of the product.
