A Study on the Corrosive Wear Mechanism on Atmospherical Temperature of STS 304 Steel (STS 304강의 분위기온도에 따른 부식마멸기구에 관한 연구)

  • This paper is studied to know corrosive wear mechanism of STS304 steel on atmospherical temperature against mating material as the same. The corrosive test was carried out by rubbing the annular surface of two test pieces in distilled water and NaCl aqueous solution. The corrosive wear mechanism was investigated by S.E.M. The experimental results show that there is one Lcr transferring from severe wear to mild wear on change of NaCl concentration and atmospherical temperature, and which is the other still remaining in server wear state. It was found that the critical sliding distance Lcr shorten with increasing NaCl concentration but it is longer with ascending atmospherical temperature and the mild wear state still continues under the condition of high generation rate and elimination rate of the corrosive product. Considering upon the result, the model of corrosive wear mechanism is proposed.

  • High strength steels are widely used as tribo-materials in the field. Previous study revealed that for mild steel, the states of strain on the worn surface measured by X-ray diffraction has a good relationship with the state of wear. The objective of this study is to identify the relationship between the state of strain on the worn surface and the state of wear in high strength steels. Sliding wear tests were carried out using several hardened steels. X-ray diffraction tests were conducted to analyze the state of strain on the worn surface during wear. The experimental results indicated that the state of strain on worn surface in the hardened steel shows the same tendency as in the mild steel. It is clear that change of half value width on the worn surface as a function of sliding speeds is broadly similar in shape to wear characteristics curve and its magnitude has a good relationship with the wear rate at two different wear modes in the hardened steel.

  • The service life of tools in metal forming process is to a large extent limited by wear, fatigue fracture and plastic deformation. In warm forging processes wear is the predominant factor for operating lives of tools. To predict tool life by wear, Archard's wear model is generally applied. Usually hardness of die is considered to be a function of temperature in Archard's wear model. But hardness of die is a function of not only temperature but also operating time of die. To consider softening of die by repeated operations, it is necessary to express hardness of dies by a function of temperatures and operating time. By experiment of reheating of dies, die softening curves were obtained. Finally modified Archard's wear model in which hardness of die was expressed as a function of main tempering curve was proposed.

  • The sliding wear characteristics of carbon steel castings were Investigated using a ball on disk type tester. The experiment was conducted using high carbon steel wire rods as ball material and carbon steel castings as disk material and different operating conditions, at room temperature under a lubrication and dry conditions.   • Gears are critical elements in automobiles, and their use as power transmitting machine elements in engineering applications is quite extensive. In the areas of contact between gear teeth, the condition of a gear is likely to deteriorate due to contact fatigue, wear, material defects, lubrication failure, etc. Thus, it is necessary to monitor its condition to ensure smooth power transmission. Gear teeth deterioration causes failures such as abrasive wear, scuffing, pitting, and spalling. These failures lead to a higher level of vibration signals in the gear system. This paper presents the results of an experiment on the surface fatigue wear of a spur gear system. The correlation between the estimated specific film thickness, statistical parameter of the vibration signals, and Stribeck curve was considered in this study.

  • This paper describes an analytical method for wheel wear prediction. The outputs from vehicle dynamic software are used to calculation the wheel wear. Two calculation examples are shown for a high-speed line and a conventional line. Through the comparison of two cases, we can see the wheel wear characteristics on the conventional line and the high-speed line. The conventional line has many curved tracks that cause severe wheel flange wear. The influences of curve radius on wheel wear are also described considering the operational performance of the high speed trainset. A method of calculation using contact patch work model is presented for determination of the evolution by wear railway wheels.

Analysis of Sliding Wear Behavior of Mild Steel According to Hardness of Dissimilar Mating Materials (이종 상대재 경도에 따른 철강재료의 미끄럼 마모 특성 해석)

  • This study examines the wear behavior of mild steel pins mated against alloyed tool steel discs in a pin-on-disc type sliding test machine and provides specific clarification regarding the effects of disc hardness on the wear behavior of a mating mild steel pin. The analysis confirms these effects through the observation of differences in the wear rates of the mild steel pins at low sliding speed ranges. These differences occur even though the hardness of the mating disc does not affect the wear characteristic curve patterns for the sliding speeds, regardless of the wear regime. In the running-in wear regime, increasing the hardness of the mating disc results in a decrease in the wear rates of the mild steel pins at low sliding speed ranges. However, in the steady-state wear region, the wear rate of a pin mated against the 42DISC is greater than the wear rate of a pin mated against the 30DISC, which has a lower hardness value. This means that the tribochemical reactivity of the mating disc, which is based on hardness value, influences the wear behavior of mild steel at low sliding speed ranges. In particular, oxides with higher oxygen contents, such as $Fe_2O_3$ oxides, form predominantly on the worn surface of the 42DISC. On the contrary, the wear behavior of mild steel pins at high sliding speed ranges is nearly unaffected by the hardness of the mating disc.

  • In this study, Curve dependent wheel flange lubricator with grease spray type is investigated and estimated a point of view reducing wheel flange wear and noise in the curve through field test on korean rail. Advantage of curve dependent wheel flange lubricator with grease spray type is found on the basis of the result of field test in comparison with oil spray type lubricator and wheel without wheel flange lubricator on railroad in Korea.
