In the present investigation wear behavior of the 6061AI composites reinforced with 5, 10, 20% SiC particles for dry sliding against a SM45C counterface was studied as a function of load and sliding velocity. Sliding wear tests were conducted at two loads(19.6 and 49N) and three sliding velocities(0.2, 1 and 2 m/sec) at constant sliding distance of 4000 m using pin-on-disk machine under room temperature. Presence of SiC reinforcement particles in the composites has displayed a transition from mild to severe wear at relatively higher applied load and sliding velocity compare to that of the matrix metal. As the volume fraction of SiC particles increased, the transition moved to a more severe wear conditions. Eventually, mild wear prevailed at a most severe wear conditions in this study, that was 49N load and 2 m/sec sliding velocity in 20% SiC particle/6061AI composite.

Flow induced vibration in steam generators has caused dynamic interactions between tubes and contacting materials resulting in fretting wear . Series of experiments have been performed to examine the wear properties of Inconel 690 steam generator tubes in various environmental conditions. For the present study, the test rig was designed to examine the fretting wear and rolling wear properties in high temperature(room temperature - 290。C) water. The test was performed at constant applied load and sliding distance to investigate the effect of test temperature on wear properties of the steam generator tube materials. To investigate the wear mechanism of material, the worn was observed using scanning electron microscopy. The weight loss increase at higher test temperature was caused by the decrease of water viscosity and the mechanical property change of tube material. The mechanical property changes of steam generator tube material, such as decrease of hardness or yield stress in the high temperature tests. From the SEM observation of worn surfaces, the severe wear scars were observed in specimens tested at the higher temperature.
This study is concerned with the production of carbon fiber reinforced carbon(C/C) with polyaromatic mesophase pitch as matrix precursor and with the investigation of friction-wear characteristics in ambient air using a constant speed type of friction tester. The main problem in using the polyaromatic mesophase as the matrix precursor is the high viscosity which may limit the complete impregnation of the fiber preform in the vacuum. To solve these problems two dimensional carbon fiber fabrics were infiltrated with meso-phase pitch in the pitch impregnator. After the impregnation and the heat treatment process. C/C com-posites were characterized by density porosity to monitor the influence of high pressure and temperature. It showed that the bulk density was increased and the apparent porosity and the density increasing rate was reduced as repeating the impregnation the carbonization and the heat treatment. The friction-wear charac-teristics of C/C composites were investigated by measuring the average friction coefficient and the specific wear rate as functions friction speed and friction pressure using a constant speed type of friction tester. C/C composite4s showed the average friction coefficient to be reduced as increasing the friction speed and the friction pressure.
Herein, we present a numerical investigation of wear analysis of sliding systems with a constant speed subjected to Archard's wear law. For this investigation, we compared two methods: eigen-wear analysis and adaptive meshing technique. The eigen-wear analysis is advantageous to predict the evolution of contact pressure due to wear using the initial contact pressure and contact stiffness. The adaptive meshing technique in finite element analysis is employed to obtain transient wear behavior, which needs significant computational resources. From the eigen-wear analysis, we can determine the appropriate element size required for finite element analysis and the time increment required for wear evolution by a dimensionless variable above a certain value. Since the prediction of wear depends on the maximum contact pressure, the finite element model should have a reasonable representation of the maximum contact pressure. The maximum contact pressure and wear amount according to this dimensionless variable shows that the number of fine meshes in the contact area contributes more to the accuracy of the wear analysis, and the time increment is less sensitive when the number of contact nodes is significantly larger. The results derived from a two-dimensional wear model can be applied to a three-dimensional wear model.

During the hot forging process, the most common cause of tool failure is wear. Tool wear results in the gradual loss of part tolerances, after which eventually the tool must be replaced or repaired. In order to maximize the lifetimes of forging tools, it is important to investigate the wear mechanisms of these tools. In this study, the hot forging of the outer race of an automotive constant-velocity joint was analyzed by a finite element method to investigate the wear distribution, especially the amount and location of the maximum expected wear damage, using Archard's wear model, which was modified considering the forging temperature. Forging analyses were carried out after modifying blocker forging tools based on established versions. The modified blocker tools resulted in an increase in the tool life up to 31% with a finisher punch.
Fracture, fatigue and wear characteristics of Al-Si alloy used for compressor are experimentally studied. Plane strain fracture toughness test is carried out using three point bending specimen. Fatigue test is performed under constant loading condition and wear test is carried out as a function of sliding velocity and applied load. To obtain the crack propagation characteristics and wear mechanism of Al-Si alloy, fracture and worn surfaces are investigated using SEM. It is verified that fracture and fatigue strength of Al-Si alloy are improved by the fine microstructure of alloy. The wear behavior and specific wear amount of Al-Si alloy are not dependent on the microstructure but on a function of the silicon content. Anodizing on the surface of Al-Si alloy, surface hardness and wear characteristics are improved.
Dry sliding wear behavior of pure Fe and Cu which have BCC and FCC crystal structure, respectively, was investigated. The wear characteristics of the pure metals with different crystal structure were compared. Dry sliding wear tests were carried out using a pin-on-disk wear tester at various loads under the constant sliding speed condition of 0.15 m/s against a silica ball at room temperature. Sliding distance was fixed as 600 m for all wear tests. Wear rate of a specimen was calculated by dividing the weight loss of the specimen after the test by the specific gravity and sliding distance. Worn surfaces and wear debris were analyzed by SEM. The wear of both pure Fe and Cu proceeded with surface deformation, resulting in similar wear rates despite of their structure difference under the current test conditions. Wear rates of both metals were low if the surface deformation due to wear forms thick surface-deformation layer that is strain hardened beneath the wearing surface. The pure Cu specimens showed a lot of oxides on the worn surface when tested at low loads less than 5 N, which resulted in very low wear rate.

Steam generators (S/G) of pressurized water reactors are large heat exchangers that use the heat from the primary reactor coolant to make steam in the secondary side for driving turbine generators. Reciprocating sliding wear experiments have been performed to examine the wear properties of Incoloy 800 and Inconel 690 steam generator tubes in high temperature water. In present study, the test rig was designed to examine the reciprocating and rolling wear properties in high temperature (room temperature - $300^{\circ}C$) water. The test was performed at constant applied load and sliding distance to investigate the effect of test temperature on wear properties of steam generator tube materials. To investigate the wear mechanism of material, the worn surfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy. At $290^{\circ}C$, wear rate of Inconel 690 was higher than that of Incoloy 800. It was assumed to be resulted from the oxide layer property difference due to the a\loy composition difference. Between 25 and $150^{\circ}C$ the wear loss increased with increasing temperature. Beyond $150^{\circ}C$, the wear loss decreased with increasing temperature. The wear loss change with temperature were due to the formation of wear protective oxide layer. From the worn surface observation, texture patterns and wear particle layers were found. As test temperature increased, the proportion of particle layer increased.
Friction and wear behavior of a carbon/carbon composite material for aircraft brake material was experimentally investigated. Friction and wear test setup was designed and built for the experiment. Friction and wear tests were conducted under various sliding conditions. Friction coefficients were measured and processed by a data acquisition system and amount of wear measured by a balance. Stainless steel disk was used as the counterface material. Temperature was also measured by inserting thermocouple 2.5 mm beneath the sliding surface of the carbon/carbon composite specimen. Wear surfaces were observed by SEM, and analyzed by EDAX. The experimental results showed that sliding speed and normal force did not have significant effects on friction coefficient and wear factor of the composite. Temperature increase just below the surface was not large enough to cause any thermal degradation or oxidation which occurred at higher temperature when tested by TGA. Wear film was generated both on the specimen and on the counterface at relatively low sliding speed but cracks, grooves, and wear debris were observed at high sliding speed. Friction coefficient remained almost constant when the sliding speed or normal load was varied. It is believed that the adhesive and abrasive components contributed mainly to the friction coefficient. Wear behavior at low sliding speed was governed by wear film formation and adhesive wear mechanism. At high speed, fiber orientation, ploughing by counterface asperities, and fiber breakage dominated wear of the carbon/carbon composite.

The characteristics of fretting wear are reviewed. Fretting damage depends on slip amplitude and classified into three groups: (1) an annular damage according to Mindlin's analysis at microslip region, (2) strong adhesive deformation without loose wear particles at the intermediate region, and (3) formation of fine oxide particles at the gross slip region. The critical slip amplitude of fretting is the boundary between (2) and (3). The boundary slip amplitude depends on normal load. The wear rate increases and saturates with increasing slip amplitude. But it is constant by considering the critical amplitude. The role of oxide particles are discussed. Three different actions are noted: accelerating wear, preventing wear and insignificant effect. The oxide shows two opposing effect depends on normal load and slip amplitude. This is related to the removal rate from the interface (abrasive action) and compaction rate at the interface to form a protective layer. The effect of oxidation is significant to determine the wear and friction. The diffusion of oxygen is restricted at the small amplitude. As a result, crack formation at the boundary is a predominant damage, related to fretting fatigue damage.
