  • 파장가변 광 필터는 WDM 광전송 시스템에 필요로 하는 핵심 부품중의 하나이다. 특히 LiNbO$_3$의 음향광학효과를 이용하는 AOTF(Acousto-Optic Tunable Filter)는 150nm 이상의 파장 가변 범위, 1.5nm 이하의 파장 통과대역폭, 수 $\mu\textrm{s}$ 정도의 비교적 빠른 스위칭 속도, 그리고 여러 파장 채널을 동시에 선택할 수 있는 장점들을 보유하고 있음에도 불구하고 표면 음향파(SAW: SurFace Acoustic Wave) 구동에 필요한 RF 파워와 부 모드(sidelobe)가 비교적 크다는 단점 때문에 실용화에 많은 제약을 받아왔다.   • In this paper, we have investigated a fiber type active coupler which utilizes the mode coupling between the side polished single mode optical fiber and the active multimode planar waveguide. The proposed device can be used for not only tunable wavelength filter or optical intensity modulator but also a tool for measuring optical properties of guiding material such as refractive index, birefringence, electro-optic coefficient, and thermo-optic coefficient. We gave designed and optimized a coupler structure using the BPM and fabricated the device using thermo-optic polymer as active planar waveguide overlay. The device showed that insertion loss was less then 0.5 dB, extinction ratio was -13 dB at the resonance wavelength, and the wavelength tunablity due to thermo-optic effect was -1.5 nm/$^{\circ}C$. The active coupler using thermo-optic effect can be used as a wavelength tunable filer, an optical intensity modulator and an optical sensor. pulses that are subsequently compressed by a dispersive optical fiber. Experimental results show that $sech^2$ shape pulses with a pulse width of ~14 ps and a time bandwidth product of ~0.34 are successfully generated at 10 GHz repetition rate. In contrast to other methods, such as higher order soliton compression, this approach does not depend on the optical power and thus shows promise for application to low-power lasers.

  • In this paper, we present thermal characteristics of a fiber Bragg grating(FBG) filter, including peak reflectivity, FWHM bandwidth, and wavelength shift by various refractive index change. The reflection spectrum of a FBG filter with refractive index change is affected by its thermal stability.

  • We demonstrate a ring type wavelength swept laser incorporating a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter in a laser cavity using 1300 nm semiconductor optical amplifier as a gain medium. The output characteristics of the wavelength swept laser according to the applied scanning frequencies are analyzed in the temporal and spectral domain. The output of the wavelength swept laser decreases dramatically as the scanning frequency increases. And there is a significant peak power imbalance between the forward scan and the backward scan as the scanning frequency increases. Its use in practical applications might be limited.

  • We demonstrate an S/S+band discretely tunable thulium doped fiber laser (TTDFL), anchored on a 50-㎓ ITU-T grid. Investigating the inversion analysis of the thulium doped fiber (TDF) in applying a dual wavelength (1.4 m and 1.5 m) pumping scheme, a laser whose tuning range covers most of the S/S+band has been obtained. Within the wide 3-㏈ bandwidth of 65.1 nm, the output power of the tunable laser exceeds 6.1 ㏈m with very flat spectral profile and the number of DWDM channels generated is as large as 178. If we increase the subsidiary pump power to 22 ㎽, the bandwidth is expanded up to 66.2 nm. By controlling the temperature of the fine grid filter, we have also shown that the frequency locking capability of the laser can be improved. The laser developed in this work is expected to be utilized as a practical optical source providing reference wavelengths in the S/S+band.

  • A new, simple lasing loop configuration employing a fiber grating was proposed and demonstrated for all-optical gain control of erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The lasing loop was designed such that the fiber grating acts as a notch filter to cutoff the lasing light as well as selects the lasing wavelength. The operating gain was clamped to the same level as the loop loss and it could be varied with a tunable directional coupler in the loop. It is believed that this type of gain-controlled erbiumdoped fiber amplifier can have several advantages when used in wavelength-division-multiplexed transmission systems.

  • Buried Bragg filters of single mode $Si_{3}N_{4}$ rib waveguide with a cover layer of $SiO_{2}$ and grating at the interface of $Si_{3}N_{4}$ and $SiO_{2}$ are designed and fabricated. Etching of the grating on $Si_{3}N_{4}$ waveguide core by buffered HF showed uniform etching with good control up to 1 nm. This buried type of Bragg filters are immune to contamination of the surface of device. The mode index and bandwidth of filters are determined by measurements of the transmission spectrum of Bragg filters and compared with that of calculation. Waveguide Bragg filters loaded with the micro-heater of Cr film and the cladding of silicone rubber are made to control the Brag wavelength of the filter. As a result the filter wavelength of the device moved by 0.41 nm for 10 mA current to the shorter side of wavelength proportional to the square of the current.

  • Design and fabrication of a TCRR (Triple-coupler Ring Resonator) filter which can provide a doubled FSR (Free Spectral Range) compared with a conventional DCRR (Double-coupler Ring Resonator) filter, are discussed. Through the use of a polymer material with a good thermo-optic property and with high contrast between core and cladding polymer, a compact TCRR filter composed of straight and curved buried waveguides of small radius is designed and fabricated. The transmission characteristics from the through and drop ports are measured using a tunable laser and a fiber array block, and the FSR is observed to be 4.4 nm, about twice that of DCRR filter, and almost the same as that obtained from the analysis using a transfer matrix method.

  • In this paper, the effects of filter parameters on a supercontinuum-based all-optical thresholder are experimentally investigated. By tuning the filter parameters, the power transfer function and power transmission function are tailored. The experimental results show that a thresholder with short center wavelength has a better power function, and the slope in the middle level of the thresholder increases with increasing bandwidth. Through tuning the filter parameters, the thresholder can achieve a steplike power transfer function for optical thresholding, and a steplike power transmission function for optical self-switching. This makes the supercontinuum-based thresholder more flexible, and allows customization of performance to meet different demands in various applications.

  • We have demonstrated a -8 dB additional reduction in the intensity sidelobe of an apodized-interaction-strength guide-wave acousto-optic filter with a center passband of 1551.6 nm. Acoustic-intensity weighting was achieved by launching a surface acoustic wave (SAW) beam in a straight acoustic waveguide, and gradually transferring this SAW intensity to the active device, and back out, by evanescent-wave coupling across a 50 !lm barrier over a 19 rom interaction length. The intensity sidelobe was -4.27 dB for an unapodized filter with abmpt onset and cutoff of the interaction, but sidelobes were reduced to at most -12.68 dB for a SAW intensity with raised-cosine weighting. The RF driving power was 17.78 mW. A linear tuning rate of 8.86 nmIMHz and a spectral width of -1.7 nm were demonstrated. rated.
