  • In this paper, we present a new analysis of monolithic laser-waveguide coupling structure employing the beam propagation method. Monolithic laser-waveguide coupler has both passive and active components It has too many parameters to consider for an analysis. So we present proper model of coupler by use of directional coupler. We employ the beam propagation method th analyze the proposed structure, we could employ the coupled mode theory but we thought in the case of this paper the beam propagation method is more appropriate than coupler mode theorybecause a number of variables which to consider is too many for the coupled mode theory. Also we use finite difference method to calcurate trial field which is a starting point of beam propagation analysis. Through this approach, we can consider more parameters. And we propose a new structure of monolothic laser-waveguide coupler which has taper structure between the distance in which coupling is taking place and passive waveguide. We can obtain 79% high coupling efficiency from our structure.

  • In this study, we performed a modeling for $K^{+}$ ion-exchanged diffused channel waveguide and waveguide-type optical coupler by Wentzel-Kramer-Brillouin(WKB) dispersion equation, normalized field distribution equation for mode and coupled mode theory, and examined the optical-power-dividing of the optical coupler fabricated by using the modeling condition. The optical-power-dividing was observed at the waveguide-type optical coupler with 3[.mu.m] line-width, 6[.mu.m] space between channel waveguides, and 3[mm] interaction length.h.

  • The polarization characteristics of ultracompact polarization-insensitive directional coupler (PIDC) based on double sandwiched rib-type waveguide are explored in detail by using longitudinal modal transmission-line theory (L-MTLT). To obtain the polarization-insensitive condition of ultracompact directional coupler, the coupling length and coupling efficiency as functions of the refractive index and thickness of sandwiched rib-type waveguide are analyzed for quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes. The numerical results show that the ultracompact polarization-insensitive coupler with hundreds of micrometer scales is realized by properly choosing structural and material parameters of double sandwiched layers. Furthermore, the influence of fundamental mode profile, which is distributed in lateral waveguide of coupler, on the coupler performance has been investigated.

  • We analyze the variation of coupling length as a function of the waveguide width for a directional coupler. It is interesting that the coupling length is not monotonic function of waveguide width for a given distance between the centers. The waveguide width for a maximum coupling length can be utilized for the optimum design of a directional coupler.

  • The crosstalks of two-waveguide & three-waveguide directional couplers are analyzed. Advantages and disadvantages for each coupler are compared and discussed. Based on the relationship between the coupled mode and the normal mode, the mathematical expressions are derived in terms of the crosstalks for each directional coupler. Numerical techniques such as the finite-difference method and the beam propagation method are employed to testify the validity of the derived equations. The calculation results show that two-waveguide directional coupler is superior to any types of three-waveguide couplers from the practical viewpoint of the crosstalk and the coupling length.

  • The directivity of crossed waveguide directional coupler is generally decreased according as coupling coefficient of it increase. In this paper, the geomertical parameters of crossed slot pair for directivity improvement is modified and the formulas for design of it are proposed. The crossed waveguide directional coupler designed upon the formulas is fabricated with the WR42 waveguide in K-band. The measured results show that the coupling coefficient is 21.5 dB and directivity is minimum 23.9 dB over the operating frequency from 18GHz to 26.5GHz.

  • In this paper, a higher-order mode coupler using coaxial-structure waveguide for Ku-band monopulse satellite tracking is proposed. The proposed higher-order mode coupler is built in a coaxial structure for compactness and weight reduction, making it suitable for mobile tracking systems. The inner circular waveguide of coaxial-structure is used to extract the fundamental mode signal and the high-order mode signal is extracted from the four slots of the outer circular waveguide and then transmitted via given stepped rectangular waveguide structure. The simulated results show that proposed higher-order mode coupler covers 250 MHz(12.75 GHz ~ 13.00 GHz) bandwidth with return loss and insertion loss characteristics. The antenna patterns of fundamental mode and higher-order mode applicable to monopulse tracking are generated successfully. Designed higher-order mode coupler using coaxial waveguide structure for Ku-band is expected to be used for high precision monopulse satellite tracking systems.

  • In this paper, we studied the characteristics of a soliton coupler using a bent nonlinear waveguide. The bent soliton coupler has very ,harp switching characteristic like the conventional soliton coupler due to the threshold effect of soliton emi, sion from the nonlinear waveguide. By using the bent structure, we can reduce the threshold power for the soliton emission. We consider the saturation effect of nonlinearity and the loss in the medium for more accurate and practical numerical analysis in wave propagation through the bent soliton coupler. The simulation results show that the consideration of the saturation effect and the ]os~ may be very important in the analyses and design of the nonlinear waveguide devices. The bent structure is useful for the emission of the spatial soliton with the low threshold power, when we consider the saturation and the loss effect. ffect.

  • This paper describes an efficient optimal design method for an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) having MMI coupler with flattened transfer function. The objective function is the norm of the difference between calculated and target spectra. To analyze the AWG transfer function, the Fresnel-Kirchhof diffraction formula was employed and the design variable was optical path difference of each array waveguide. The (1+1) Evolution Strategy was applied to an eight-channel coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) AWG as the optimization tool. For obtaining a broadened spectrum, we use a MMI coupler and the variation in optical path difference at each array waveguide changes the shape of the transfer function to obtain the optimal spectrum shape.
