  • A new method is presented for the isolation of resonances from scattered waves for elastic wave resonance scattering problems. The resonance scattering function consisting purely of resonance information is defined. Elastic wave resonance scattering from a water-filled cylindrical cavity imbedded in an aluminum matrix is numerically analyzed. The classical resonance scattering theory and the new method compute different magnitudes and phases of the resonances from each partial wave, and therefore. their total resonance spectra are quite different. The exact $\pi$ - radians phase shifts through the resonance and anti-resonance frequencies show that the proposed method properly extracts the vibrational resonance information of the scatterer compared to resonance scattering theory.

  • A new method is proposed for the isolation of resonances from scattered waves for the isolaton of resonances from scattered waves for acoustic wave resonance scattering problems. The resonance scattering function consisting purely of resonance information is defined. Acoustic wave scattering from a variety of submerged bodies is numerically analyzed. The classical resonance scattering theory (RST) and the new method compute identical magnitudes of the resonances from each partial wave, however, the phases are significantly different. The exact $\pi$-radians phase shifts through the resonance and anti-resonance frequencies show that the proposed method properly extracts the vibrational resonance information of the scatterer. Due to the differences in phases of the resonances from each partial wave, the new method and RST generate different total resonance spectra.

  • A two-dimensional boundary element method was used for the scattering analysis of side-drilled hole(SDH). The far-field scattering amplitude was calculated for shear vertical(SV) wave, and their frequency and time-domain results were presented. The time-domain scattering amplitude showed the directly reflected wave from the SDH leading edge as well as the creeping wave. In an immersion, pulse-echo testing, two measurement models were introduced to predict the response from SDHs. The 2-D boundary element scattering amplitude was converted to the 3-D amplitude to be used in the measurement model. The receiver voltage was calculated fer SV wave incidence at 45$^{\circ}C$ on the 1 m diameter SDH, and the result was compared with experiment.

  • High-frequency bistatic scattering measurements from a corrugated surface were made in an acoustic water tank. First the azimuthal scattering pattern was measured from an artificially corrugated surface which has varying impedance. The corrugated surface was installed both transverse to the direction of incident wave and longitudinal to the direction of incident wave. The angle between the corrugated surface and the direction of the incident wave was about $45^{\circ}$. Second, the scattering strengths were measured from the flat sediment and the corrugated sediment. A critical angle of about $37^{\circ}$ was calculated in the acoustic water tank. The measurements were made at three fixed grazing angles: $33^{\circ}$ (lower than critical angle), $37^{\circ}$ (critical angle), and $41^{\circ}$ (higher than critical angle). The scattering angle and the grazing angle are equal in each measurement. Frequencies were from 50 kHz to 100 kHz with an increment of 1 kHz. The corrugated sediment was made transverse to the direction of the incident wave. The first measurement indicates that the scattering patterns depend on the relations between the corrugated surface and the direction of the incident wave. In the second measurement, the data measured from the flat sediment were compared to the APL-UW model and to the NRL model. The NRL model's output shows more favorable comparisons than the APL-UW model. In case of the corrugated sediment, the model and the measured data are different because the models used an isotropic wave spectrum of sediment roughness in the scattering calculations. The isotropic wave spectrum consists of $w_2$ and ${\gamma}_2$. These constants derived from sediment names or bulk size. The model which used the constants didn't consider the effect of a corrugated surface. In order to consider a corrugated surface, the constants were varied in the APL-UW model.

  • A general theory of scalar wave scattering by two separated particles is developed to give the coefficients of scattering and transmission in the form of recurrence formulae. Iterative applications of the formulae yield the coefficients in the form of power series of the coefficients obtained from single-particle scattering theories, and each term of the of power series can be interpreted as multiple scattering of the wave between the two particles in increasingly higher order.

  • The problem of elastic wave resonance scattering from elastic targets is studied in this paper. A new resonance formalism to extract the elastic resonance information of the target from scattered elastic waves is introduced. The proposed resonance formalism is an extension of the works developed for acoustic wave scattering problems by the author. The classical resonance scattering theory computes reasonable magnitude information of the resonances in each partial wave, but the phase behaves in somewhat irregular way, therefore, is not clearly explainable. The proposed method is developed to obtain physically meaningful magnitude and phase of the resonances. As an example problem, elastic wave scattering from an infinitely-long elastic cylinder was analyzed by the proposed method and compared to the results by RST. In case of no mode conversion, both methods generate identical magnitude. However, the new method computes exact $\pi$ radian phase shills through resonances and anti-resonances while RST produces physically unexplainable phases. In case of mode conversion, in addition to the phase even magnitudes are different. The phase shifts through resonances and antiresonances obtained by the proposed method are not exactly $\pi$ radians due to energy leak by mode conversion. But, the phases by the proposed method show reasonable and intuitively correct behavior compared to those by RST.

  • The electromagnetic wave scattering from active objects has only recently attracted attention.$^{(1).(3)}$ Theoretical studies have considered normal-incidence plane-wave interactions with active dielectric cylinders with the prediction of large enhancements in the scattered field for bound mode structures. According to the theory of the electromagnetic wave scattering from a dielectric cylinder, the eigenvector solutions are discrete and have both guided (non-radiative) and leaky (radiative) mode solutions. By using an anti-guiding (leaky) structure instead of a guided structure and scattering at oblique incident angles near critical angle, the scattering resonances predicted by theoretical studies were obtained for the first time. A fine-grained scan of the plane-wave incident angle a reveals the existence of discrete scattering resonances. The diameter and real part of the index of refraction determine the resonant conditions and the imaginary part of the refractive index has a threshold value to make mode up for its radiation loss. The cross coupling between transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes is clearly detected for both active and passive scattering as theoretically expected. (omitted)

  • The problem of scalar wave scattering by a sphere on or near a planar substrate is analytically solved. The solution is a set of wave functions coming in the form of infinite series of spherical and plane waves. In air, the incident plane wave is either scattered by the sphere or reflected from the substrate. A part of these scattered or reflected waves propagate to the other object where it is reflected and scattered again. Such processes of scattering and reflection repeat in turn indefinitely to generate multiply scattered waves, which are represented in the corresponding terms in the infinite series. The term in the series can be arranged in a recognizable manner to explicitly reveal the involved process and the multiplicity of scattering.
