  • Pressure waves are generated and propagate in tunnel when train enters a tunnel with high speed. Compression wave due to the entry of train head propagates along the tunnel and is reflected at tunnel exit as expansion wave. While expansion wave due to the entry of train tail propagates along the tunnel and is reflected at tunnel exit as compression wave. These pressure waves are repeatedly propagated and reflected at tunnel entrance and exit. Severe pressure change per second causes ear-discomfort for passengers in cabin and micro pressure wave around tunnel exit. It is necessary to analyze the transient pressure phenomena in tunnel qualitatively and quantitatively, because pressure change rate is considered as one of major design parameters for an optimal tunnel cross sectional area and the repeated fatigue force on car body. In this study, we developed the characteristics method analysis based on fixed mesh system and compared with the results of real train test. The results of simulation agreed with that of experiment.

  • Recently, coastal erosion has been widely in progress and the erosion level becomes also serious in the world wide, espeically in East Sea in Korea. Since it would threaten the life, economics and security risk, it is necessary to much comprehend the reason why coastal erosion has occurred according to the geographical characteristics. Meanwhile, analysis about hydrodynamics of the solitary wave such as tunami in swash zone is needed for the best management practice of coastal erosion. Solitary wave is nonlinear wave and can be reproduced in the laboratoy scale by openning suddenly a sluice gate with water head difference, of which methodology was found in the literature, since it could be simply determined by a significant wave height. Thus, in this sutdy the generation of solitary wave was experimentalized using the sluice gate. Experimental conditions were classified by angles of a beach slope, a water level in a beach slope and a difference of water level between in a headtank and a channel bed. Two kinds of dimensionless analyses based from experimental results in this study were presented; the first analysis indicates nondimensionalization between the wave height and the water level in a beach slope in order to investigate characteristics of solitary wave approaching the beach. The second shows the other nondimensionalization between dynamic pressure and static pressure on a beach slope to investigate the relationship between wave breaking and wave pressure. Under the same conditions as laboratory experiments, the numerical results computed with a SWAN model embedded in FLOW 3D were compared in terms of wave height, and pressure on the beach slope, which shows good agreement with each other. Overall results from this study could provide fundamental hydraulic data for the reliabile verification of numerical simulation results about coastal erosion in swash zone caused by solitary waves.

  • Flow phenomena such as the pressure transients Inside a high-speed railway tunnel and the Impulsive waves at the exit of the tunnel are closely associated with the characteristics of the entry compression wave, which is generated by a train entering the tunnel. Tunnel entrance hood may be an effective means for alleviating the Impulsive waves and pressure transients. The objective of the current work is to explore the effects of the train nose shape and the entrance hood on the characteristics of the entry compression wave. Numerical calculations using the method of characteristics were applied to one-dimensional, unsteady, compressible flow field with respect to high-speed railway/tunnel systems. Two types of the entrance hoods and various train nose shapes were employed to reveal their influences on the entry compression wave for a wide range of train speeds. The results showed that the entry compression wave length increases as the train nose becomes longer and the train speed becomes lower. The entry compression wave length in the tunnel with hood becomes longer than that of no hood. Maximum pressure gradient in the compression wavefront reduces by the entrance hood. The results of the current work provide useful data for the design of tunnel entrance hood.

  • When a front head of train enters a tunnel at a high speed, compression wave is generated at tunnel entrance due to the confinement effect and propagated along the tunnel with sound of speed. The propagated compression wave is reflected at tunnel exit due to abrupt pressure change at passage. The reflected wave is expansion pressure wave. And when the rear head of train goes through the tunnel entrance, another expansion pressure wave is generated and propagated along the tunnel. The pressure drop occurs seriously around train when the two expansion pressure waves come cross on train in the tunnel. In order to reduce the pressure drop, the compression wave front must be controlled because the intensity and magnitude of pressure drop is nearly proportional to that of compression wave at tunnel entrance. This study relates to reduction of the pressure wave gradient with respect to tunnel entrance shape change with various kind of angle and rounding. The results show characteristics of wave propagation in tunnel, usefulness of characteristic curve to estimate proper time domain size in numerical study and measuring time in actual experiment. Also rounding is contributed to improve pressure wave front even if its radius is very small at tunnel entrance. In order to improve of pressure wave front at tunnel entrance, proper angle is prefered to rounding with big radius and an angle of around 14$^{\circ}$ is recommended according to this simulations, And it is expected to reduce additional pressure drop in tunnel when the location and the size of the internal space for attendant equipment are considered in advance.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the characteristics of pressure wave propagation of viscous fluid flow in a circular pipe line. The goal of this study is to select the best frequency of each control factor of a circular pipe. We intend to approach a formalized mathematical model by a very exact and reasonable polynomial for fluid transmission lines. and we computed this mathematical model by computer. The results show that the oil viscosity decreased as the length of the circular pipe increases. and The energy of pressure wave propagation decreased as the pipe diameter decreases. The factor is that density of oil was changed resonant frequency. It has been found the viscosity characteristics is changed largely by length of hydraulic pipe and volume of cavity tank.

  • Studies to investigate the influence on hydraulic acoustic wave were conducted using pressure swirl atomizer under making frequency range from 0 to 60Hz using water as a propellant. Pressure oscillation from hydraulic sources gives a strong influences on atomization and mixing processes. The ability to drive these low frequency pressure oscillations makes spray characteristics changeable. The effect of pressure perturbation and its spray characteristics showed that low injector pressure with pressure pulsation gives more significantly than high injector pressure with pressure perturbation in SMD, spray cone angle, breakup length. Moreover, this data could be used for prediction of low combustion instability getting G factor.

  • Characteristics of the flame propagation for normal and abnormal combustion in hydrogen premixture in a cylindrical constant-volume combustion chamber are studied numerically. A detailed hydrogen oxidation kinetic mechanism, mixture transport properties and a model describing spark ignition process are used. The calculated pressure-time history of the stable deflagration wave propagation agrees well with the experiment. The ignition of the premixture in the unburned gas, initiated by the hot spot, causes a transition from deflagration to detonation under some initial temperature and pressure. Under the initial conditions with high temperature and pressure, excessive ignition energy initiates a strong blast wave and a detonation wave that follows. The chemical reaction in the detonation wave is much more vigorous than that in the deflagration wave and the peak pressure in the detonation wave is much higher than the equilibrium value.

  • Cylindrical chokes are used widely as components of hydraulic equipments. The dynamic characteristics between flowrate and pressure drop through the cylindrical chokes were discussed by the frequency characteristics of the chokes. It was assumed no pressure recovery occurred near the downstream of the choke. The pulsating jetflow from the outlet of cylindrical chokes show very complex behaviours which are quite different from the steady jet flow but it's not clarified quantitatively. In order to utilize the chokes as a flowmeter, it is indispensable to discuss the estimation of the dynamics of pressure drop in the downstream jetflow region of cylindrical chokes. In this experimental study, it is clarified that the reattachment length depended on pressure wave is compared with it depended on velocity wave. A pulsating flow is verified by visualization method. In the present study, the flow characteristic variables of laminar pulsating flow are investigated analytically and experimentally in a circular pipe. Characteristic parameters of the ratios of inertia(.PHI.$_{t,1}$) and viscous(.PHI.$_{z,1}$) term to pressure term are introduced to describe the flow pattern of laminar pulsating flow. flow.low.

  • Arrangement of the facilities for improving harbor functions depends on sea and land conditions such as the ship's arrival and departure conditions, waves and tide. And the plan and the size of the facilities depend much on harbor and marine environment condition such as cargo quantity, ship size, ship traffic and seawater circulation. Among these, waves have so much effect on a breakwater design that it is the most important to understand their characteristics and to apply them to breakwater design. Therefore, to analyze the effect of waves characteristics over a rubble mound breakwater, we have calculated wave pressure by using numerical analysis at each tide level and have analyzed the effect of wave pressure on structure stability by conducting the stability analysis with the wave pressure. As a result, it is found that during low and mean tide level time the biggest wave pressure is estimated near calm water level. But during high tide time, the biggest wave pressure is estimated in front of capping. And the stability analysis indicates also that a structure is most unstable when low tide time wave pressure is acting on. After reviewing the stability of a structure by applying vertical and horizon wave forces, it is concluded that safety factor is lower than ordinary time(max. about 15%), is also reviewed when designing a rubble mound breakwater.

  • This paper describes a series of fundamental studies on reflection and emission of weak pressure waves from an open end of a pipe. Acoustical theories which have been employed in the plane pressure waves inside a pipe are applied to the present study. The objective of the present study is to investigate the reflection or emission coefficient of pressure wave at an open end of a pipe, the length of open end correction, and the directivity characteristics of the pressure waves emitted from the pipe. The results show that the reflection coefficient of pressure wave at an open end and the length of open end correction decrease for the wave length of pressure wave to increase. It is also found that the reflection coefficient for a baffle plate at the exit of pipe is larger than that for no baffle plate.
