  • The performance of Manchester-coded ASK optical wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) systems is evaluated laking into account the shot noise and the four wave mixing(FWM) caused by fiber nonlinearities. The result is compared to conventional non-return-to-zero(NRZ) systems for ASK modulation formats. Further, the dynamic range, defined as the ratio of the maximum input power(limited by the FWM), to the minimum input power(limited by receiver sensitivity), is evaluated. For 1.55 rm 16 channel WDM systems, the dynamic range of ASK Manchester coded systems shows a 2.0 dB improvement with respect to the NRZ. This result holds true for both dispersion-shifted fiber and conventional fiber it has been obtained for 10 GHz channel spacing, 1 Gbps/channel bit rate.

  • This paper describes a new method to increase the fundamental output of PWM inverter by adding all triplen-harmonics to sinusoidal reference wave. As a result, the amplitude of the fundamental component is increased upto 21 percent compared with the conventional SPWM method, and hence the conversion efficiency of dc link is higher. Also as the commutation number of the inverter is decreased to two-thirds, the heating of the switch devices is reduced. In addition random carrier modulation is adopted to lower the acoustic noise at given frequency modulation index.

  • Eavesdropping prevention performance is evaluated on a commercial window shaker, which is used to prevent a glass window from eavesdropping. Speech transmission index (STI) is introduced in order to estimate quantitatively the speech intelligibility of the sound detected on the glass window. Objective test by IEC standard using modulation transfer function (MTF) is performed to determine STI. Using Maximum Length Sequency (MLS) signal as a sound source, MTF is measured by accelerometers and laser doppler vibrometer. STI under different level of disturbing wave are compared to confirm the disturbing effect on the speech intelligibility.

  • Possibility of the remote eavesdropping through window glass is investigated using a laser sensor. Various thicknesses and types of glass windows are excited by maximum length sequency (MLS) signal and the vibration sound is detected by a laser doppler vibrometer. Intelligibility of the detected sound is evaluated using the speech transmission index (STI), which is based on the modulation transfer function (MTF). In order to identify the disturbing effect, different level of disturbing wave is generated by an outside speaker and a window shaker attached on the glass window. On the different thickness of glass windows, decrease effect of the speech intelligibility is analysed.

  • Several new modulators using Voltage Variable Capacitance Diode are discribed. It was investigated that amplitude modulation which does not need modulation power is obtained by mdulation VVC diode as a tuning element of the quartz oscillator circuit. It offers a good AM system for carryphones in the citizen bands. While frequency modulated quartz oscillators coupled with a quarter wave network were tested as a wide band frequency modulator, Hartley type transistor oscillator offers the most stable and reproducibel FM quartz oscillator.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a passive transponder chip for RFID applications. Passive transponders do not have their own power supply, and therefore all power required for the operation of a passive transponder must be drawn from the field of the reader. The designed transponder consists of a full wave rectifier to generate a dc supply voltage, a 128-bit mask ROM to store the information, and Manchester coding and load modulation circuits to be used for transmitting the information from the transponder to the reader. The transponder with a size 410 x 900 ${\mu}$m$^2$ has been fabricated using 0.65 ${\mu}$m 2-poly, 2-metal CMOS process. The measurement results show the data transmission rate of 3.9 kbps at RF frequency 125 kHz.

  • A new method for HRV(heart rate variability) detection from the R-wave signal, based on the IPFM(integral pulse frequency modulation) model and its similarity to pulse position modulation, is presented. The proposed method exert lowpass filtering with a Kaiser window. In this paper, The proposed method presents a powerful, but simple, tool for investigation of HRV. It also guarantees real-time behavior. simplicity in design, and phase linearity. Even without the basic assumption of IPFM model. the new algorithm can still be used on-line and with higher performance. It is thoroughly proved that lowpass filtering is an ideal method for PSD(Power Spectrum Density) analysis of HRV.

  • Visible light communication (VLC) is considered a strong future candidate for indoor wireless communication. However, its performance seems to be relatively unsatisfactory when compared to wireless local area network (WLAN) communication using millimeter waves. To improve the performance of VLC, numerous technologies have been proposed so far, in both electrical and optical domains. Among the proposals, optical beamforming (OB) is an optical-domain technology that can concentrate light in a specific direction or on a target spot. It can significantly improve VLC performance and can be widely used, because it does not depend on electrical modulation schemes. Therefore, this review discusses the concept, principle, and types of OB, the structure of a VLC system using OB, performance results of OB, and the combination of OB with electrical signal modulation in VLC. OB is expected to be one of the key techniques in future VLC implementations, similar to radio-frequency beamforming in millimeter-wave communication.

  • This paper describes the design, construction and implementation of matrix converter based on space vector modulation technique. The matrix converter provides sinusoidal input and output wave forms, bidirectional power flow, controllable input power factor and a compact design, compared to the VSI with diode rectification stage at the input. The implemented prototype of matrix converter is built using the exclusive IGBT module and has an input filter, overvoltage protection circuit and commutation means for overcoming practical issues. The good results tested using an induction motor are also presented.

  • Numerical calculations have been made about the phase differences of the short circuit current in a solar cell according to the variation of the modulation frequency. The phase differences in short circuit current of the solar cell exposed to the modulated light source is measured experimentally. From the above two results, the minority carrier lifetime has been determined. Also, minority carrier lifetime has been determined from the observed photo-induced open circuit voltage decay wave form that follows termination of the excitation.
