  • Using a numerical model solving the shallow-water equations, unusual huge run-up heights observed in the lees of both Babi and Okushiri islands were investigated in detail. The effects of incident tsunami widths were particularly examined by adjusting the transverse length of the wave-maker in laboratory and numerical experiments. The calculated run-up heights were compared with the laboratory experimental data. It has been found that the run-up heights in the lee of a conical island are strongly dependent on the ratio of a transverse length of incident tsuanmis to a base diameter of the island. Keywords : shallow-water equations, tsunami, run-up height, conical island.

  • A Numerical analysis method is developed in order to compute the flaw and wave field for 2-dimensional floating body in the free roll motion with 3 degrees of freedom. Navier-Stokes and continuity equations are gaverning equations in tire present study. Finite Difference method is introduced to discretize the governing equation. The free surface is traced by the interface tracking method and the grid system is fitted to boundaries including free surface and body surface, which is moving in the flow field. The numerical scheme is based on Maker and Cell method. For the sake of validation of the numerical method, the computed roll decay factors according to tire midship section shapes are compared with measured results. The numerical results are discussed in order to understand the effect of midship section shape on roll motion.

  • Every service firm must find ways to attract new customers, retain existing customers, and remain competitive and profitable. As competition increases, delivering better service becomes more important. Service quality is considered as a vital aspect for the success of the firms. Restaurant cannot be separated from the service quality they have to deliver. The development of restaurant is supported with the reputation of the country where the food comes from. Recently, one of the most trending topic is Korean wave which affects the Korean cuisine. A fuzzy AHP was employed to evaluate the service quality. It is more preferable than traditional AHP which is criticized for its inability to handle the uncertainty of the decision maker's perception. Six attributes are used to evaluate five Korean restaurants in Semarang, Indonesia. The result shows that innovation is the most important attribute. It seems that decision makers viewed the food variation and new method service as main factors that the restaurants have to manage. This finding can provide the managers with valuable insights into the attribute that reflects customers' perceptions; also to position their service based on their competitors. Validating the scale in other culture-based restaurants is an interesting area to be pursued.

  • This study aims to investigate the characteristics of wave generation in a deep ocean engineering basin and to develop a meta-model of the transfer function of the wavemaker that reflects the geometric characteristics of the deep ocean engineering basin. To this end, the two-dimensional frequency domain boundary element method was applied to achieve an efficient analysis that reflects the geometric characteristics of the deep ocean engineering basin. The developed numerical method was validated through comparison with the analytical solution. Numerical analyses were conducted for the boundary value problem of the wavemaker according to various periods and the positions of the movable bottom. The numerical results were used to investigate the effect of the geometric characteristics of the deep ocean engineering basin on the transfer function of the wavemaker, and the effect of depth on wave generation was checked by changing the position of the movable bottom. To efficiently utilize the various results of the boundary element method, a meta-model, an approximate model of the transfer function of the wave maker, was developed using a thin plate spline interpolation model. The validity of the developed meta-model was confirmed through a comparison of the results of the model tests.

  • In this study, regressive models were employed to predict the blood velocity by using independent variables which measured by 3 sensors, such as electrocardiogram (ECG), photo-plethysmogram (PPG), pulse diagnosis sensor, without ultrasound device at high cost. In experiment, the high predictable model was induced to estimate the blood velocity correctly by comparing correlation values and significance probabilities between independent variables and blood velocities. Results showed that the model induced by two or three independent variables had a higher predictability than those by a single independent variable.

  • When a body starts to move, the flow near the intersection point between a body and a free surface changes violently and rapidly in a very short initial time interval. This flow phenomena must be investigated whenever one treats the interaction between a body and a fluid, such as the motion of a floating body, sloshing in a tank, wave maker problem, entry of a body into a fluid etc.. Until Roberts(1987), it was widely accepted that a singularity exists at the intersection point. However, he showed that the singularity does not exist if a body moves non-impulsively. In this paper, an analytical solution cosistent for the case of impulsive motion of a body is obtained by including the effect of surface tension. From the characteristics of the newly obtained solution, a critical value associated with an oscillating phenomenon is found, and further more, it is shown that the oscillating phenomenon does not appear in the region where the distance form the intersection point is less than this critical value.
