In this study, the program was modified by adding the empirical formula of EurOtop (2018) to enable calculation of wave overtopping on armoured slope structures in the FUNWAVE-TVD model using the fully nonlinear Boussinesq equation. The validity of the modified numerical model was verified by comparing it with CLASH data and experiment data for the rubble mound structure. This model accurately reproduced the change in wave overtopping rate according to the difference in the roughness factor of the armoured block, and well reproduced the rate of decrease in wave overtopping rate due to the increase in relative freeboard. The overtopping rate of the armoured slope structures showed significant differences depending on the positioning condition of the armoured blocks. When Tetrapods were placed with regular positioning, the overtopping rate increased significantly compared to when they were placed with random positioning, and it was consistent with when they were placed with Rocks. Meanwhile, when rocks were placed in one row, the wave overtopping rate was greater than when rocks were placed in two rows, which is believed to be due to the influence of the roughness and permeability of the structure's surface.

Rubble mound breakwaters protect the coastal line against severe erosion caused by wave action. This study examined the performance of different sizes and properties (i.e. height of vertical wall and tetrapod size) of rubble mound breakwaters on reducing the overtopping discharge. The physical model used in this study was derived based on an actual rubble mound in Busan Yacht Harbor. This research attempts to fill the gap in practical knowledge on the combined effect of the armor roughness and vertical wall on wave overtopping in rubble mound breakwaters. The main governing parameters used in this study were the vertical wall height, variation of the tetrapod weights, initial water level elevation, and the volume of overtopping under constant wave properties. The experimental results showed that the roughness factor differed according to the tetrapod size. Furthermore, the overtopping discharge with no vertical wall was similar to that with relatively short vertical walls (${\gamma}_v=1$). Therefore, the experimental results highlight the importance of the height of the vertical wall in reducing overtopping discharge. Moreover, a large tetrapod size may allow coastal engineers to choose a shorter vertical wall to save cost, while obtaining better performance.

Overtopping wave energy convertor is an offshore wave energy convertor for collecting the overtopping waves converting the water pressure head into electric power through the hydro turbines. This paper presents a numerical wave tank based on the commercial CFD code Fluent. The Reynolds Averaged Naiver-Stokes and VOF model is utilized to generate the 2D numerical linear propagating waves, which has been validated by the analytical solutions. Several incident wave conditions and shape parameters are calculated in the optimal designing investigation of the overtopping characteristics and discharge for the overtopping wave energy convertor.

The present study investigates the behaviour of overtopping flows falling on the leeside of a caisson breakwater with dissipating blocks through laboratory measurements. The falling overtopping flows in the leeside are expected to directly affect the leeside stability of the breakwater. This study focuses on not the resultant stability but the characteristic pattern of the overtopping flows depending on wave conditions through examining front velocity and plunging distance in the leeside. Regular waves were used to investigate the dependence of the overtopping flow pattern on wave conditions and a modified image velocimetry combining the shadowgraphy and cross-correlation method was employed for measurements of image and velocity. From the measurements, it is shown that the plunging distance and front velocity of the overtopping flow in the breakwater leeside increase as the wave period or height increases. From non-dimensional relationships between the variables, empirical formula for the velocity and overtopping distance are suggested.

Wave overtopping rate is one of the most important design parameters for coastal structures. In this study, the physical model tests for measuring the wave overtopping have been conducted with the foreshore slope in front of the seawall. The bottom seabed for the coastal road area was fabricated at the wave flume for two areas in the East sea areas. The wave overtopping rate was measured for various water depths and wave conditions in each coastal area. In particular, the impulsive wave conditions were compared with the previous research and the similar trends of wave overtopping was observed. It could be known that the effect of foreshore slope was significant and should be concerned for applying theses formula like EurOtop.

The behavior and flow characteristics of the floating wave energy converter were analyzed by using CFD in this study. The average significant wave height was confirmed as 0.5~2.0m from the Korean coastal sea area. This study was carried out by selecting a range of 1.0~1.6m in the wave height to simulate the operations of realistic wave energy converter system. The principle of a piston wave maker was applied in order to produce periodic wave. The behavior of the wave energy converter and the state of the wave overtopping according to the generated periodic wave were confirmed through the unsteady three-dimensional flow analysis. It was found that the wave overtopping rate according to the generated periodic wave was in range of the 11.6~30.0 kg/s.

The allowable mean overtopping discharge is used as a design parameter for coastal structures. The crest elevation of coastal structures should ensure the wave overtopping discharge within acceptable limits for structural safety and the safety of pedestrians, vehicles, operations, and so on. In this study, two-dimensional physical model tests on typical rubble-mound structure geometries were performed and the the mean wave overtopping discharges under various water depth and wave conditions were measrued. The various test conditions were applied to the tests with the change of the wave steepness, relative freeboard and relative wave height. An empirical formula from the experimental data was proposed to predict the mean wave overtopping volumes.

This study investigates the behavior of a plunging wave and its associated runup and overtopping through velocity measurements and suggests an empirical formula for overtopping velocities on a structure. The plunging wave breaking in front of the structure generates very bubbly flow fields. For measurements of the two phase flow field of the breaking wave, particle image velocimetry and a modified optical method were employed. The obtained velocity fields were discussed in respect of the process of wave impinging, runup and overtopping. The overtopping velocity distribution is found to have a nonlinear profile showing a maximum magnitude at its front part. The relationship of self-similarity among dimensionless parameters is observed and used to obtain the regression formula to depict the overtopping velocity.
The present study examines similarity of behavior between an overtopping wave generated by a plunging wave and a dam-break flow through hydraulic model tests. The dam-break flow has been employed to estimate the overtopping effect on the basis of the dam-break flow's behavior similar to the overtopping. In this study, the overtopping velocity was measured by a modified image technique using bubble and bubble texture images called bubble image velocitmetry. From the measurements, the vertical profiles of horizontal overtopping velocity at cross-sections along the deck were presented and discussed. Maximum velocity and depth-averaged velocity at each cross-section were compared with an analytical solution solving the dam-break flow, Ritter's solution. The initial water depth of importance for the solution was determined from the tested wave condition and the overtopping measurements. The comparison shows that the solution with the initial water depth estimated using the front velocity of the overtopping wave is in good agreements with the measurements.
This study investigates the characteristics of stem waves along a vertical structure under overtopping conditions through laboratory experiments in a wave basin. The uni-directional random waves with Bretschneider-Mitsuyasu frequency spectrum as incident waves were used. This study is focused on the reduction of wave height due to the variation of relative freeboard height (R) and the results for wave overtopping conditions are compared with those for non-overtopping conditions. Though the relative wave height along a vertical structure decreases with the decrease of relative freeboard, the variation of stem width is not significant. For the relative freeboard is greater than 1, the reduction effect of stem wave height by overtopping can be ignored in this experiments. The reduction effect of wave height along the structure for R =0.5 is about 10% comparing with R =1.5.
