In this paper, the 1/4 wavelength backward-wave directional coupler using coupled lines with finite metallization thickness is described. A mode-matching method, simple and fast approach to the quasi-static analysis, has been used to analyse this structure. The numerical results show that it is possible to overcome the disadvantages of weakly coupling, low directivity, and narrow strip distance non-realizable in the case of 1/4 wavelength backward-wave directional coupler with zero thickness conductor. It is also revealed that thicker metallization causes longer coupler length in the case of backward-wave symmetrical parallel coupled line directional coupler. The finite metallization thickness can be a new parameter for tight coupling in the design of backward-wave directional couplers, which enables us to design more accurate properties of monolithic microwave integrated circuits.

In this paper, forward-wave -3㏈ directional coupler with finite-thickness conductor and asymmetrical coupled lines are designed and experimentally verified using mode-matching based design methodology. Most of studies published in the literatures about the coupled lines are mainly concentrated on the adjustment of coupling amount by changing various geometric configurations. The analysis results in this paper show that thicker metalization requires reduced coupler length in the forward-wave directional coupler composed of asymmetrical coupled lines. Several forward-wave directional -3 ㏈ couplers with finite metalization thickness composed of asymmetrical coupled microstrip lines have been designed in the 5 ㎓ based on proposed design method. The measured data show -4.05㏈∼-4.09㏈ coupling at center frequency which is very closed to design value. The tight coupling has been implemented with accurate design methodology which take mentalization thickness into account.

In this paper, a new type microstrip directional coupler has been designed and a 3dB coupler has been fabricated and measured. The measured and analysed results are agree well each other except difference of 1 dB insertion loss. There are two eigenmodes, e.g. even and odd mode in coupled microstrip lines. By using the difference between these two eigenmodes phase constants, the directional coupler can be designed by adjusting coupling length, which has a desired coupler has a disdvantage that its coupling length is longer than conventional oe, but it may be used as a useful coupler in millimeter wave range. And it has the merit of less discontinuity effects, becuase it is simpler than the other couplers in structure.

A guided - wave electro - optical modulatored directional coupler $2{\times}2$ was fabricated on X-cut $LiNbO_3$ by proton exchange wi th self-aligned method. The Electode pattern was formed by the four extra gap electrode separtion within self-aligned electrode mask. Initial cross over state turned that by controlling the anneal ing process and self-aligned electrodes are used in fabricating the electro-optical modulatored directional coupler $2{\times}2$. The modulatored directional coupler $2{\times}2$ has very good figures of merits: the measured crosstalk was -28.2 dB and the modulating valtage of 3.2[V].

In this paper, the optimal design of a novel microstrip directional coupler with a grooved housing for high directivity characteristic is presented. It will be shown that the high directivity of the microstrip coupler can be achieved simply by attaching an optimized housing structure. over the microstrip, which is much easier to fabricate than other conventional types. The dimensions of the proposed structure are maximized by using (1+1) evolution strategy (ES) combined with the deterministic algorithm. To improve the effectiveness of the results, efficient optimization procedures suitable for the model are proposed. From these results, it is determined that the proposed structure indicates an improved directivity. The optimized results are verified by full wave analysis at the center frequency of 850MHz.
We propose a nearly lossless, compact, electrically modulated vertical directional coupler, which is based on the controllable evanescent coupling in a previously proposed graphene-assisted total internal reflection (GA-FTIR) scheme. In the proposed device, two single-mode waveguides are separate by graphene-$SiO_2$-graphene layers. By changing the chemical potential of the graphene layers with a gate voltage, the coupling strength between the waveguides, and hence the coupling length of the directional coupler, is controlled. Therefore, for a properly chosen, fixed device length, when an input wave is launched into one of the waveguides, the ratio of their output powers can be controlled electrically. The operation of the proposed device is analyzed, with the dispersion relations calculated using a model of a one-dimensional slab waveguide. The supermodes in the coupled waveguide are calculated using the finite-element method to estimate the coupling length, realistic devices are designed, and their performance was confirmed using the finite-difference time-domain method. The designed $3{\mu}m$ by $1{\mu}m$ device achieves an insertion loss of less than 0.11 dB, and a 24-dB extinction ratio between bar and cross states. The proposed low-loss device could enable integrated modulation of a strong optical signal, without thermal buildup.

A guide-wave electro-optical modulatored direct-ional coupler 1X2 was fabricated on LiNbO$_3$ by proton exchange with self-aligned method After proton exchange process, the waveguide is formed by annealing process, The relationship between refractive index change of waveguide and maximun output was studied a long the annealing time. A self-alinged method was used to simplify the fabrication process of the waveguide and the maximize the efficiency of electric field. The modulatored directional coupler 1${\times}$2 has very good figures of merits; The measured crosstalk was -29.5[dB] and the modulating voltage of 8.0[V].

We design and fabricate 3-dB tandem directional coupler using the coplanar waveguide structure which is applicable to balanced amplifiers and mixers for 60 GHz wireless local area network system. The coupler comprises the multiple-sectional parallel-coupled lines to facilitate the fabrication process, and enable smaller device size and higher directivity than those of the conventional 3-dB coupler employing the edge-coupled line. In this study, we adopt the structure of two-sectional parallel-coupled lines of which each single-coupled line has a coupling coefficient of -8.34 dB and airbridge structure to monolithically materialize the uniplanar coupler structure instead of using the conventional multilayer or bonded structure. The airbridge structure also supports to minimize the parasitic components and maintain desirable device performance in V-band (50$\~$75 GHz). The measured results from the fabricated couplers show couplings of 3.S$\~$4 dB and phase differences of 87.5$^{\circ}{\pm}1^{\circ}$ in V-band range and show directivities higher than 30 dB at a frequency of 60 GHz.

This paper presents a full-wave, moment method analysis of a Moreno directional coupler with tow crossed-slots between two crossed rectangular waveguides. the overall structure is divided into several rectangular waveguides and cavities by the use of the equivalence principle to the complex slot regions. this enables a simple and efficient analysis involving the well-known retangular waveguide/cavity Green's functions. For a numerically efficient simulation, the roof-top basis expansion and line testing is used and an acceleration technique is applied to the series summation in the Green's functions. The numerical results are compared with the measurements to verify the correctness of the present analysis.

This paper introduces a W-band millimeter-wave power standard transfer system using the direct comparison method. The transfer system was developed to evaluate the effective efficiency and calibration factor of a W-band waveguide power sensor. The evaluation method and the measured results of the directional coupler that characterizes the calibration system are studied. The uncertainties of the standard transfer system are investigated, and the major uncertainty contributors are discussed as well. The performance of the realized W-band power standard transfer system was verified by comparing results with reference values.
