An Analysis of the Mechanical Characteristics of the Knife Edges used in the NPL Watt Balance (질량신정의 구현을 위한 NPL 와트발란스 나이프에지의 기계적 특성 분석)

  • Of the seven base units of the international system of units, only the kilogram is still defined in terms of a material artifact. One of the experimental approaches opening the way to a new definition of the kilogram is the watt balance To improve the performance of the NPL watt balance, we need to quantify and reduce hysteresis effects in the balance knives. In this paper, we discuss the mechanical characteristics of the knife edges used in the NPL watt balance. The hysteresis mechanism is analyzed using the finite element method. It is found that the cause of hysteresis is not normal stress but shear, and the deformation of the flat, rather than the knife, is an important factor in the hysteresis mechanism. The study presented here, using finite element analysis, suggests that parameters such as material property, tip radius and knife straightness can be more important than others, such as friction coefficient, tip angle, etc.

Effects of Whole Body Fatigue and Limited Visual Field on Postural Stability (전신 피로와 시야 제한이 자세균형 능력에 미치는 영향)

  • Loss of postural stability can possibly lead to slip and fall accidents in the number of workplaces and everyday life. This study was aimed to examine the effects of whole body fatigue and partially limited visual field on the ability of maintaining postural balance during quiet standing. A group of twelve healthy male subjects participated in the experiment. Before and after experiencing the whole body fatigue induced by bicycling exercises, the position coordinates of subject's center of pressure (COP) were obtained under the two levels of visual field condition (i.e., open visual field and limited visual field). Four levels of the whole body fatigue examined were rest, 300watt, 600watt, and 900watt. Position coordinates of COPs measured on a force plate were then converted into the total length of postural sway path in both the medio-lateral (ML) direction and the anterior-posterior (AP) direction. Two-way ANOVA result showed that the length of sway path in the AP direction became significantly larger as the whole body fatigue accumulated. Post-hoc test revealed statistically significant differences between rest and 900watt and between 300watt and 900watt. The significant increase of the sway length was also found when the visual field was partially obstructed by the boxes. In the ML direction, however, there was no statistically significant difference of the postural sway in both the AP and ML directions. The results imply that the ability of maintaining postural stability can be reduced significantly due to such tasks along with whole body fatigue. The postural balance can also be impaired by the limited visual field.

  • In this paper, we design and implement high-power amplifier with 18 watt for W-CDMA repeater. We simulate microwave circuits using RF simulator, ADS1.3 and optimize the circuit to obtain the linear and high power using Harmonic balance method. Harmonic balance is an excellent method in the analysis of nonlinear system. The HPA is fabricated on tefron substrate($\varepsilon_{{\gamma}}$=3.48, h=0.5mm, T=0.035mm). From the measured result, the HPA has gain of 52dB, 1 dB compression power of 52.8dBm and good ACPR (Adjacent Channel Power Radio) performance.l Power Radio) performance.

  • Conventional optimization designs of wireless networks mainly focus on spectral efficiency (SE) as a performance metric. However, as diverse media services are emerging, a green wireless network, which not only meets the quality of experience (QoE) requirements for users and also improves energy efficiency (EE), is the most appropriate solution. In this paper, we firstly propose the unit QoE per Watt, which is termed QoE efficiency (QEE), as a user-oriented metric to evaluate EE for wireless networks. We then analyze which is the kind of wireless resource given priority to use under different scenarios to obtain an acceptable QEE. Particularly, power, delay and data-rate related to QoE are separately addressed for several typical services, such as file download, video stream and web browsing services. Next, the fundamental tradeoffs are investigated between QEE and SE for wireless networks. Our analytical results are helpful for network design and optimization to strike a good balance between the users perceived QoE and energy consumption.
