  • By using a simple conceptual model, a sensitivity analysis is performed to examine the effects of changing model parameters on the model outputs, the groundwater discharge and the radius of influence, induced by tunnel construction. The results indicate that the model outputs are most sensitive to the tunnel depth and the hydraulic conductivity, and their sensitivities vary with time. It is also revealed that the sensitivity of the specific yield in- creases constantly with time, and therefore it is as important as the hydraulic conductivity for constructing a wet-system tunnel. A transient model is suggested to simulate the stepwise tunnel excavation and the watertight lining. The model is used for a tunnel construction site to predict groundwater mow into the tunnel and the transient response of the surrounding aquifer system. The predicted results are highly sensitive to the hydraulic conductivites assigned by model calibration. Thus, a postaudit should be made to reduce the uncertainty of the predictive model.

  • When a tunnel is excavated below groundwater table, the groundwater flow occurs towards the tunnel resulting in the seepage pressure. In this paper, the effect of groundwater flows on the behavior of shotcrete lining installed between ground-liner interfaces was studied considering permeability ratio between the ground and the shotcrete into account. Three-dimensional coupled finite element analysis was performed for this assessment. Seepage forces will seriously affect the shotcrete behavior since arching phenomena do not occur in seepage forces. A parametric study was conducted on the various tunnelling situations including interfacial properties between ground and shotcrete lining, the shape of tunnel cross-section and the thickness of liner, etc. Moreover, the convergence-confinement method (CCM) of a NATM tunnel considering seepage forces was proposed. The result showed that the more water tight is the shotcrete, the smaller is the convergence and the larger is the internal pressure. Therefore, the watertight fiber-reinforced shotcrete is found to be even more advantageous when used in under water tunnel.

  • As a baseline survey for long-term monitoring on environmental change around the Antarctic King Sejong Station, distribution pattern of Deschampsia antarctica Desv., a flowering plant newly colonized were investigated qualitatively and quantitatively in both austral summer 2002 and 2003. Dispersal of the seeds and vegetative leaves by skuas might lead to the colonization into this area from neighbors in Maxwell Bay. The pioneer populations were observed around ponds and a stream of the Sejong Point in January 2002, and the maximum dispersal area was four times expanded after a year. Most of the populations were formed on the stable and well-drained substrate, which consisted of moss carpet of Sanionia georgico-uncinata (65%) and pebbles (25%), while only a few young individuals were observed on the unstable and watertight silt-sandy area. Especially, S. georgico-uncinata was being effectively utilized as their primary substrate with the soft, coarse and water-contained leaves. Also the perennial mature plants of D. antarctica were mainly formed on the moss carpet rather than pebbles. A few individuals were grown on other mosses of Polytrichastrum alpinum, Bryum pseudotriquetrum, Pohlia cruda, and Conostomum magellanicum and on a liverwort of Cephaloziella varians. We expect that dispersal of D. antarctica and the following succession to grass field will be countinuously and dynamically proceeded in this area, with the characteristics of ecological niche against the initial moss populations, on the similar continuity of environmental conditions. The continuous observations are needed with establishment of database on environmental change of micro-habitats, e.g. the water content and nutrients of soil and the underground temperature and permafrost.

  • Double-deck tunnels beneath the groundwater table have relatively large volume and commonly constructed as watertight tunnels. In this case, it requires to secure stability of the tunnels for buoyant force. Generally the contact force between lining and ground is sufficient to resist the buoyant force. However in the long-term the contact force could be reduced because of structural deterioration. In this study the effect of long-term buoyant force acting on the double-deck tunnel is investigated. The results has shown that the buoyant force has increased invert deformation and stress. It is indicated that the contact resilience between lining and ground needs to be kept during tunnel operation.

  • Watertight 25.8 kV/600 A/12.5 kA fault current limiters (FCLs) have successfully installed in five areas (Incheon, Seoul, Gyeong-gi, Daejeon, Suwon) on KEPCO power distribution line for the purpose of commercial demonstrations. The fault current limiting operation of this FCL, which includes functions of sensing, commutation, and reduction of fault currents, is perfectly completed within 1 cycle immediately after fault occurs. The performance of FCL was verified by short circuit test, impedance test, insulation test, temperature-rise test, and control test, etc at PT&T in LS industrial systems, which is the official certification institute in Korea. In 2013, and also the FCL field test was performed in order to test the protection coordination between conventional relays and FCL, on the 1.5 kA and 5.0 kA faults, which were made by connecting the Artificial Fault Generator (AFG) to the distribution line in test grid at KEPCO Power Testing Center. The next step of this project is to check the FCL conditions caused by real external environment, and acquire the various data from five regions installed with FCL. In this paper, we intend to explain the FCL specifications and performance characteristics, and check the expected effect by application of FCL to power distribution line based on the power system analysis of an application site.

  • Objective : We investigated the locations of compressing vessels in hemifacial spasm. To approach compression sites, we described and evaluated the efficacy of the infranuchal infrafloccular (INIF) approach. Methods : A retrospective review of 31 consecutive patients who underwent microvascular decompression (MVD) through INIF with a minimum follow-up of 1 year was performed. Along the intracranial facial nerve, we classified the compression sites into the transitional zone (TRZ), the central nervous system (CNS) segment and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) segment. The INIF approach was used to inspect the CNS segment and the TRZ. Subdural patch graft technique was used in order to achieve watertight dural closure. The cranioplasty was performed using polymethylmethacrylate. The outcome and procedure-related morbidities were evaluated. Results : Twenty-nine patients (93%) showed complete disappearance of spasm. In two patients, the spasm was resolved gradually in 2 and 4 weeks, respectively. Late recurrence was noted in one patient (3%). The TRZ has been identified as the only compression site in 19 cases (61.3%), both the TRZ and CNS segment in 11 (35.5%) and the CNS segment only in 1 (3.2%). There was no patient having a compressing vessel in the PNS segment. Infection as a result of cerebrospinal fluid leak occurred in one patient (3%). Delayed transient facial weakness occurred in one patient. Conclusion : The TRZ and the CNS segment were more vulnerable area to the compression of vessels. We suggest that surgical avenue with the INIF approach provides early identification of this area.

  • This study focused on the reconstructional point of Shinan ship-wreck that was excavated between $1976\~1984$. The wreck, which might be sunk in the beginning of the 14th century, is regarded as a vessel of Yuan dynasty, China. This paper tried to find out some structural characteristics and principal dimensions for restoration. The Shinan shipwreck's structural characteristics are summarized as follow, 1) The Shinan shipwreck is formed V-shaped cross section with bar keel, 2) The vessel is divided 8 holds by 7 bulkheads. 3) The ship has flat type stem and transome stern. 4) A rabbeted clinker -built is basically adopted on planking joint. 5) A wooden sheathing, which means a sort of protecting board against marine insects, is covered outside of the main hull, 6) For making an watertight structure, oakum and lime mixtured t'ung-oil are used along the seam of planking and bulkhead. 7) A V-shaped deep water-way exists at both deck side. 8) The shipwreck is believed to have 2 masts at least. 9) The shiptimbers are classified as Chinese Red Pine(Pinus Massonina) which is mainly grown in the southern part of China. Considering as mentioned above the structural characteristics, Shinan ship-wreck could be classified as Chinese Fu-chuan type(복선형) of sea-going ship. The Shinan ship's principal dimensions which are calculated on the basis of Chinese traditional shipbuilding custom, are as follow, Length overall(L.O.A). : 34.80m Length water line(L.W.L) : 24.90m Breadth(B.max.) : 11m Breadth(B) : 10m Depth at keel line(H) : 3.75m Draft(D). : 3.15m Freeboard(F) : 0.65m Ratio, length/breadth(L/B). : 2.26 Ration, breadth/depth(B/D) : 3.5 Height of stem : 7m Height of stern : 10m Displacement : ab.340ton.

  • Purpose: Mandibulotomy approach and mandible sparing approach are most common methods for oropharyngeal cancer surgery. Good surgical view and convenience of flap inset are advantages of mandibulotomy approach but deformity of mandible contour, postoperative malocclusion and radionecrosis are its limitations. To make up for the limitations, mandible sparing method is commonly performed, but limited surgical view and difficulties of flap inset are the weak points of this approach. The purpose of the study is to compare mandibulotomy and mandible sparing approaches in postoperative complications and progression of the treatment in oropharyngeal cancer operation and reconstruction. Methods: Single reconstructive microsurgeon operated for oropharyngeal cancer patients with different surgeons of head and neck department who prefer mandibulotomy and mandible sparing approach respectively, and we compared the frequency of postoperative complication, operation time, duration of hospitalization and recurrence rate between two different surgical approaches. Results: Mandibulotomy approach was used in 18 patients and mandible sparing approach was used in 15 patients. In mandibulotomy approach, there happened one case of teeth injury and one case of necrosis of skin and gingiva, but there happened no malocclusion and radionecrosis. In mandible sparing approach, there were 3 cases of fistula and 2 cases of infection which are significantly higher than mandibulotomy approach. There were no significant differences between early regional recurrence and duration of hospitalization. Conclusion: In this study we compared two different methods for the surgical approach in oropharyngeal cancer surgery. As mandible sparing approach has difficulties of limited surgical view, it can be used for the limited indications of anterior tongue and mouth floor cancer. Mandibulotomy approach has advantages of good surgical view and convenience of flap inset. In this method preservation of gingival tissue, watertight fashion suture, delicate osteotomy and plate fixation to maintain occlusion are the key points for the successful results.

  • High Strength Concrete (HSC) has weakness that in a fire, it is spalled and brittles. The phenomenon of spalling is made by water vapor's (resulting from evaporation in the material at over $100{^{\circ}C}$)' being confined in watertight concrete. As the concrete strength increases, the degree of damage caused by the spalling becomes more serious because of the permeability. It is reported that the polypropylene(PP) fiber has an important role in protecting concrete from spalling and the optimum dosage of PP fiber is 0.2%. This study was conducted on the nonreinforced concrete specimens. The high-temperature behavior of high-strength reinforced concrete columns with various concrete strength and various dosage of PP fibers was investigated in this study. The results show that the ratio of unstressed residual strength of columns increases as the concrete strength increases and the ratio of unstressed residual strength of columns increases as the dosage of PP fiber increases from 0% to 0.2%, however, the effect of fiber dosage on residual strength of column barely changes above 0.2%.

  • In this study, the self-healing effect of a fiber-reinforced cement composite (FRCC) was examined using a drying-wetting test and an outdoor exposure test. The influence of various curing conditions on the self-healing effect of the FRCC was also investigated. The effect of self-healing was evaluated using a permeability coefficient and by investigating the cracks using a optical microscope. The results confirmed that the FRCC was capable of self-healing under a long wetting time and a low drying temperature. In addition, watertight performance by self-healing was shown to have a significant influence on wetting time. Meanwhile, this self-healing effect was enhanced by hydration as a result of rainfall when the FRCC was put under actual environmental conditions. Moreover, it was determined that cracking self-healing can be improved by using the appropriate admixture materials.
