Effects of Exposure to Hexavalent Chromium on Hematological Parameters and Plasma Components in Flatfish, Paralichthys olivaceus (6가크롬 노출에 따른 넙치, Paralichthys olivaceus의 혈액학적 성상 및 혈장성분의 변화)

  • Paralichthys olivaceus (mean length, $13.3{\pm}1.6cm$; mean weight, $25.6{\pm}3.7g$) were exposed to waterborne hexavalent chromium at different concentrations (0, 0.5, 1.0, and $2.0mg\;L^{-1}$) for 10 days. Hematological parameters such as hemoglobin and hematocrit of P. olivaceus were significantly decreased after waterborne chromium exposure. There were no significant alterations in inorganic plasma components, calcium, or magnesium after waterborne chromium exposure. Organic plasma components such as glucose and cholesterol levels were significantly increased after exposure to chromium at concentration over $1.0mg\;L^{-1}$. However, significant change in total protein was not observed. Enzymatic plasma components such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels were significantly increased after chromium exposure. Results of this study indicate that waterborne chromium exposure can cause significant alterations in hematological parameters and plasma components of P. olivaceus. Such changes in parameters could be used as reliable indicators for toxic effects of waterborne chromium exposure.

Preparation of Heat-resistance Waterborne Coating Containing Synthetic Hectorite Clay (합성헥토라이트 점토를 함유한 내열성 수성코팅제의 제조)

  • 수열법으로 합성한 헥토라이트 점토(SHC), 아크릴 라텍스 및 코팅첨가제들을 배합하여 성분이 다른 수성코팅제(WBC-0, WBC-1, WBC-2) 3종류를 제조하였다. 제조한 수성코팅제(WBC)의 pH, 용액점도 및 고형분을 조사하였고, 전단력에 따른 유동성을 레오메타로 측정하였다. 또한 WBC로부터 주조된 필름의 열안정성과 투명성을 각각 TGA와 UV-VIS 분광광도계로 조사하였다. SHC가 8 phr 포함된 WBC-2는 전단력에 따라 졸과 겔의 상전이 현상, 즉 요변성을 나타내었으며 이로 인해 저장안정성이 우수하였다. 주조한 WBC-1과 WBC-2 필름의 초기분해온도와 투명성은 시판 WBC(OP-55W)의 필름보다 각각 99.6~110.2$^{\circ}C$와 20.9~21.7%의 범위로 증가하였다. 결과적으로, SHC가 함유된 WBC는 수팽윤성 점토에 의해 내열성과 용액점도의 증대효과가 나타났다.

Waterborne Pathogens Identification in Public Bathroom by PCR-Reverse Blot Hybridization Assay

  • A total of 30 water samples were collected from 30 different public baths in Seoul, Korea. Contamination of public bath water by waterborne pathogens can cause disease outbreaks and contribute to increase background rates of disease. Pathogens in water was filtered by nitrocellulose membrane with $0.45{\mu}m$ pore size. The membrane filters were analyzed by both cultivation and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of partial 16S rRNA gene. Various microorganisms including 4 Escherichia coli/Shigella spp. 1 Salmonella spp. 3 Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 2 Mycobacterium spp. were identified by reverse blot hybridization assay (REBA). PCR-REBA was able to identify many bacterial genera in one assay. Our results suggest that appropriate hygiene practice and continuous monitoring is needed for reducing health risk associated with public bath houses.

  • A novel silicone (Si) containing vinylic monomer, N-(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl) methacrylamide (TESPMA), based on 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and methacryloyl chloride (MCl) has been synthesized for formulation of waterborne polyurethane (WPU). Two types of vinyl group containing Si, methacryloxypropyltriethoxysilane (MPTES) and triethoxyvinylsilane (TEVS), have been used as coupling reagents for comparison of the effects of Si kinds with TESPMA on the WPU. A series of new siliconized WPU, vinyl acetate/vinyl ester of versatic acid (VAc-Veova), TESPMA, MPTES and TEVS hybrid latexes have been successfully prepared by emulsion polymerization in the presence of WPU dispersion.

  • Existing domestic ink market had some problem because of dependence on CPP import, increasing cost, competitive price. For this reason, previous speed of research and developments are very slow. Therefore, develop the new waterborne type of non-chlorine resin, enhance the nation's position with manufacturing outstanding products. Through this thesis, the purpose is mix the polar resin and non-chlorine resin with many proportion and manufacturing better product than existing resin. Pilot production samples have run the test of adhesion, transparency, water resist and resist high pressure car washing. In conclusion, this thesis found that mix acryl Urethane resin and Non-Chlorine resin is the optimum condition.

Ingestion of Polystyrene Microplastics Acutely Induces Oxidative Stress in the Marine Medaka Oryzias javanicus

  • Larvae from the marine medaka fish Oryzias javanicus were exposed with polystyrene microplastics (MPs) for 24 h. Exposure to waterborne fluorescent MPs showed clear ingestion and egestion in feces. Under constant MPs, the concentration of dissolved oxygen significantly decreased in 24 h compared to the control. Significant intracellular reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde contents were detected in larvae, indicating oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. Significant elevations in mRNA expressions of heat shock protein 70 and antioxidant defense system genes (glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase) were measured with increases in enzymatic activity of oxidative stress-related proteins. Taken together, the alterations to the molecular and biochemical components suggested that waterborne MPs had an oxidative stress effect on marine medaka larvae.

  • A conjugated polymer is the next-generation emerging semiconductor material that can be applied in various fields, from organic electronics to biomedical applications. However, its low solubility in an aqueous medium has made the use of toxic organic solvents inevitable, thereby leading to formulation of conjugated polymers in the form of waterborne nanoparticles. This review paper discusses two principles of nanoparticle formation and representative methods for synthesizing conjugated polymer nanoparticles.
