Ocean dumping of sewage sludge is banned. Therefore, it is needed to develop alternative treatment method. Sewage sludge and waste glass are used to prepare lightweight brick. Large amount of energy is consumed to prepare building material, because of its high preparation temperature, or above $1,200^{\circ}C$. We study to prepare lightweight brick, using sewage sludge and waste glass as raw materials in this research. Lightweight brick was made at low temperature of below $800^{\circ}C$ to reduce $CO_2$ emission by geopolymer technique. Calcination temperature, mixing ratio of sewage sludge/waste glass and water glass/water were discussed to evaluate their effect on the brick prepared. In this study, the optimal conditions for preparing bricks was $750^{\circ}C$ of firing temperature, 1.5 of mixing ratio for water glass/water and 10 : 90 wt% of sewage sludge/waste glass. At this condition, compressive strength and specific gravity of brick prepared were 5.1 MPa and 0.46, respectively. These values satisfy the criteria on a lightweight brick.
Pharmaceutical byproduct sludge and cosmetic industry wastewater sludge can be used as a raw material of compost. Effects of three types of pharmaceutical byproduct sludge and one type of cosmetic industry wastewater sludge on soil properties and red pepper growth were investigated in a field based concrete pot ($2{\times}2m$). These sludges and pig manure ($5Mg\;ha^{-1}$, dry basis) were incorporated into the upper of loam soil 30 days prior to transplanting red pepper. Changes in soil properties and contents of heavy metals and toxic organic compounds in soil and plant were measured. And also plant growth measurement and bioassay of soil phytotoxicity were included. Contents of heavy metals were increased in the soils treated with the sludges. Plant growth in the sludge treatments were mostly inferior to that of NPK treatment, especially in early stage. Content of N in plant was lower in all sludge treatments at early and middle growth stages, and it was especially caused by characteristics and concentration of nitrogen and organic matter of sludges. Total yield of red pepper was highest in the NPK treatment and followed by pharmaceutical sludge 3, pig manure, pharmaceutical sludge 1, and pharmaceutical sludge 2, and the yield of cosmetic sludge treatment was considerably lower than others. HEM and PAHs contents in soil of cosmetic sludge treatment were $4.80mg\;kg^{-1}$ and $2,263.2{\mu}g\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. Root elongation of lettuce exposed to the water extract of soil treated with cosmetic sludge was about 20% of that found in the test with soil extract of non fertilization treatment. At present, raw materials of compost were authorized according to the contents of organic matter, heavy metals and product processing. Toxic organic compounds analysis and bioassay would be helpful for authorization and assessment of suitability of raw materials of compost.
This paper presents PKES(PuKyung -Excel based Simulator) for WWTPs(wastewater treatment plants) by using MS Excel and VBA(Visual Basic for Application). PKES is a user-friendly simulator for the design and optimization of the whole plant including biological and physico-chemical processes for the wastewater and sludge treatment. PKES calculates the performance under steady or dynamic state and allows changing the mathematical model by the user. Mathematical model implemented in PKES is a improved integration model based on ASM2d and ADM1 for simulation of AS(activated sludge) and AD(anaerobic digestion). Gaseous components of $N_2$, $N_2O$, $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ are added for estimation of GHGs(greenhouse gases) emission. The simulation results for comparison between PKES and Aquasim(EAWAG) showed about the same effluent concentrations. As a result of verification using by measured data of BOD, TSS, TN and TP for 2 years of operation, calculated effluent concentrations were similar to measured effluent concentrations. The values of average RMSE(root mean square error) were 1.9, 0.8, 1.6 and 0.2 mg/L for BOD, TSS, TN and TP, respectively. Total GHGs emission of WWTP calculated by PKES was 138.5 ton-$CO_2$/day and GHGs emissions of $N_2O$, $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ were calculated at 21.7, 28.9 and 87.9 ton-$CO_2$/day, respectively. GHGs emission of activated sludge was 32.5 % and that of anaerobic digestion was 67.5 %.
An important factor in determining the design and treatment efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is the quantity and quality of influent. These detailed and accurate information is essential for process control, diagnosis and operation, as well as the basis in designing the plant, selecting the process and determining the optimal capacity of each bioreactor. Probabilistic models are used to predict the wastewater quantity and quality of WWTPs, which are widely used to improve the design and operation of WWTPs. In this study, the optimal probability distribution of time series influent data was derived for predicting water quantity and quality, and wastewater influent data were generated using the Monte Carlo simulation analysis. In addition, we estimated various alternatives for the improvement of bioreactor operations based on present operation condition using the generated influent data and activated sludge model, and suggested the alternative that can operate the most effectively. Thus, the influent quantity and quality are highly correlated with the actual operation data, so that the actual WWTPs influent characteristics were well reproduced. Using this will improve the operating conditions of WWTPs, and a proposed improvement plan for the current TMS (Tele Monitoring System) effluent quality standards can be made.

The water content of dewatered cake produced from belt press dewatering equipment was about 75 wt% which was some high to handle it, so the equipment contained a limit at the economical and environmental aspect. The thermal dewatering equipment built as an alternative to overcome several problems was set up at the sludge treatment field and estimated some feasibility as comparison with the dewatering performance of belt press. First, dewatering properties of waterworks sludge was analyzed by monthly. The sludge of a water shortage season contained a high organic content which led to be difficult to dewater the cake, the other side the sludge of rainwater season was ease to dewater because of low organic content. According to the results to analysis the water content of dewatered cake produced from two equipments on the base of the seasonal dewatering properties, the water content of dewatered cake produced from thermal dewatering for sludge of water shortage season was $41.6{\sim}48.3$ wt% and $71{\sim}84$ wt% from belt press. In the case of rainwater season, the water content of dewatered cake produced from thermal dewatering was $34{\sim}37.7$ wt% and $57{\sim}70$ wt% from belt press. It was understood that thereduction of water content of cake by thermal dewatering was larger than belt press. The economical aspect for two equipments was evaluated on considering the reduction of cake treatment amount as the decrease of water content of cake. When putting the cost index of thermal dewatering into 100, belt press was 121. This meant that thermal dewater was more economical than belt press by about 20% in the side of construction and operation. In conclusion, thermal dewatering equipment was estimated by producing the low water content dewatered cake as well as being operated with low coat.

The activated sludge process is a commonly used method for terating sewage and waste waters. The process is chatacterized by a lack of measurement instrumentations and control goals that are not always clear and not well understood. In such process, fuzzy control concept may be able to be adapted, do this paper presents a design method for fuzzy controller based on a selected sub-rule set from the total rule set and a multivariable fuzzy reasoning algorithms. In order to achievesystematic and efficient control of the activated sludge process under a great deal of disiutbances and a variety of perfotmance characteristics, a top-level rule-based fuzzy controller os proposed which provises lower-controllers with the suitable set-points according tothe onput-output states of the process.

Sewage sludge and clay used as raw materials in the study. Green aggregates contain different contents by dried weight of the sewage sludge, up to 80 percent is manufactured and burning conditions of soak temperature, soak time and rate of temperature increase. influence of burning condition and mixing ratio on specific gravity of burned aggregate are discussed. The appropriate burning condition to all aggregates is evaluated. Aggregates result form the thermal treatment get specific gravity under 0.8, water absorption fewer than 7.5 percent, and aggregate crushing value from 28 to 53. As the result, aggregates can be available as the lightweight aggregate for non-structural concrete.
Removal of nitrogen and phosphate in wastewater is concerned to important for the prevention of eutrophication in receiving water and lake. Conventional activated sludge system designed for organics removal can be retrofitted only by modification of aeration basin to maintain anaerobic and aerobic state. Biological nutrient removal processes(BNR) such as Bardenpho, A$^{2}$/O, UCT, VIP were generally used for the treatment of wastewater. However these BNR processes used in large scale WWTP were not suitable in small scale WWTP(i.e., package type WWTP) due to relatively large fluctuation of flow rate and concentration of pollutants. The purpose of this research was to develop the compact, effective and economical package type WWTP for the removals of carbon and nitrogen in small scale wastewater. Intermittently aerated activated sludge system (IADFAS) were investigated for removal of nitrogen in both domestic wastewater, Bardenpho process was also evaluated. Nitrogen removal of IAAS, IADFAS, Bardenpho were 75, 77 and 67%, respectively.
Many plants have been improved to adapt the target of the biological treatment processes changed from organics to nutrients since the water quality criteria of effluent was reinforced and included T-N and T-P for the municipal wastewater treatment plant. To meet the criteria of T-N and T-P, the conventional biological reactor such as aeration tank in activated sludge system is changed to the BNR (biological nutrient removal) processes, which are typically divided into three units as anaerobic, anoxic and oxic tank. Therefore, the solid separation process should be redesigned to fit the BNR processes in case of the application of the DAF (dissolved air flotation) process as an alternatives because the solid-liquid separation characteristics of microbial flocs produced in the BNR processes are also different from that of activated sludge system as well. The results of this study revealed that the microbial floc of the anaerobic tank was the hardest to be separated among the three steps of the unit tanks for the BNR processes. On the contrary, the oxic tank was best for the removal efficiency of nutrients as well as suspended solid. In addition, the removal efficiency of nutrients was much improved under the chemical coagulation treatment though coagulation was not indispensable with a respect to the solid separation. On the other hand, in spited that the separation time for the microbial floc from the BNR processes were similar to the typical particles like clay flocs, over $2.32{\times}10^3$ ppm of air volume concentration was required to keep back the break-up of the bubble-floc agglomerates.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to reduce odor complaints by identifying problems with odor management at the site of the water regeneration center and researching odor management methods. Due to the high population density of Korea, sewage treatment facilities are adjacent to residential and industrial areas. According to previous studies, the main malodor-emitting facilities of sewage treatment facilities were preliminary treatment facilities (2,220 times), sedimentation basins (4,628 times), and sludge treatment facilities (9,616 times). Research design, data and methodology: Compound malodors and designated malodor-producing substances were collected from five site boundaries of the water regeneration center and analyzed according to the official methods to test malodor, and a total of two times (August and September 2020) were conducted. Results: As a result of the measurement, in the green area in front of the center office, compound malodors were detected at a maximum of 8 times and at least 3 times during the dawn time. As for the designated malodor-producing substances, 0.1ppm of ammonia was detected in the green area in front of the center office and the park golf course. This is within 15 times the maximum allowable emission level of compound malodors and within 1ppm of the maximum allowable emission level of ammonia. Conclusions: Even if the dilution rate of the compound malodors did not exceed the maximum allowable emission level, the odor could be recognized, and more research is needed in the future to establish effective reduction measures according to the subjective and individual and seasonal odor characteristics.
