Silicom oxide films with good water repellency were prepared by rf plasma-enhanced CVD (rf-PECVD) using four kinds of organosilicon compound, which had different number of methyl ($CH_3$) groups, and oxygen as gas sources. The differences in the deposition rates, film composition and film properties were studied in detail. Water repellency depended on the number of $CH_3$ groups in the organosilicon compounds and the partial pressure of oxygen in the plasma. The highest contact angle for water drops, about 95 degrees, was obtained when trimethy lmethoxy silane (TMMOS) was used. The contact angle decreased with the amount of oxygen gas introduced into the plasma. The dissociation of $CH_3$ groups by adding oxygen was comfirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The optical properties were estimated by double-beam spectroscopy and ellipsometry. The transmittance of the glass plate coated by the film prepared with tetramethoxy silane (TMOS) was about 90% and the refractive index of film was 1.44. This value was smaller than the refractive index of a glass plate(soda lime glass, refractive index is 1.515) and this film played a role of anti-refractive coating.
Most of silicone used for water repellent finish is MHP (methyl hydrodiene polysiloxane), which is formed by hydrolysis and condensation polymerization of MHD (methyl hydrodiene dichlorosilane: Me H Si $Cl_2$). The cross-linking theory explains the water repellent mechanism of MHP. The silicone finish on fiber could improve in handle, softness, abrasion resistance, soil repellency, tear strength and crease resistance, as well as water repellency. According to using method silicone-water repellent finishing agents, could be devided into air dry type and curing type. MHP is the typical curing type of water repellent finishing agent, and this type requires the curing temperature above $150^{\circ}C$ at least. High curing temperature is the very drawback of this curing type. For this reason, there has been global interest in the lowering of its temperature. The objective of this study is to investigate merits of alkali treatment for silicone finishing by ANOVA and LSD (least significant difference).
UV-curable water-repellent finish was carried out to impart one-side repellency to the PET fabrics using a formulation of a UV-active fluorocarbon agent and a water soluble photoinitiator. The aqueous formulation was padded on the PET fabrics and it was subsequently UV-cured. The unirradiated side of the cured fabrics was made to wetteable to water by the prolonged UV/ozone irradiation. The influence of photoinitiator concentration, agent concentration and UV energy for photodegradation on the performance of the finished fabrics were investigated. The difference in the functional property of front and back sides was examined by measuring water repellency at each side of the treated fabrics, which resulted in four rating difference between two-side. The UV-cured and photodegraded PET surfaces were characterized by ATR, ESCA and FE-SEM.
With increased interests in environmental issues, people are looking for new materials that serve special and bio-activated functions. One of interesting materials is charcoal which has excellent adsorption ability for harmful volatile organic compounds, fireproof performance, far-infrared ray emission, and electromagnetic shielding. Since non-crack carbonized board was developed from wood-based composite materials, carbonization method might be applied to woodcraft products such as wood cup and bamboo. In this study, manufacture of wood charcoal bowl was conducted with carbonization method developed in 2009 in order to activate wood products market. Ash tree(Fraxinus rhynchophylla) cup was carbonized at $600^{\circ}C$ with two pretreatments which were phenol resin and wood tar solution treatment. After carbonization of ash tree cup, non-crack charcoal cup were successfully manufactured. Phenol resin treatment affected on charcoal cup manufacturing both positively and negatively. For a positive way, it prevented shrinkage. For a negative way, it decreased water repellency. On the contrary, wood tar treatment accelerated shrinkage a bit and increased water repellency. Based on the results, wood tar can be used as pre-treatment solution for reducing post-treatment costs. We confirmed woodcraft products can be carbonized without deformation, so carbonization may provide a high value-added products from wood.
Waterborne fluorinated acrylate copolymer (WFAC) for surface modification of textile was synthesized from perfluoroalkyl ethyl acrylate, octadecyl acrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, surfactant and 3,3 methyl-methoxy butanol. The structures of the synthesized WFAC were determinated by FT-IR and $^{19}F-NMR$ analysis. The thermal stability investigated with DSC and TGA was decreased with increasing the content of fluorinated acrylate in the copolymer. However, the particle sizes of WFAC were increased with increasing the content of fluorinated acrylate in the copolymer. The surface energies calculated by contact angles of WFAC were in the range of 29.80$\~$13.41 dyne/cm. On the observing SEM of the textile surface treated with WFAC, the textile was swollen and compacted with increasing the concentration of water repellency agent. WFAC synthesized in this study showed a good water repellency.
Pesticide protective clothing has not been frequently worn due to its lack of thermal comfort. It is important to develop fabrics which can allow the wearer to work in comfort. One of the possible way to achieve the goal is to produce fabrics with a water- and oil-repellent finish which would resist pesticide penetration but maintain some breathability. The purpose of this study were to evaluate the pesticide barrier properties of untreated and water- and oil-repellent finished nonwoven fabrics. Three types of nonwoven fabrics(Tyvek, Sontara and Kimlon) were used as test specimens. By pad-dry-cure method, each of the specimen was treated with fluorocarbon. The pesticide barrier properties (amount of pesticide penetration and residue) were measured by the gas chromatography. The performance properties of untreated and treated specimens were evaluated with respects to water pepellency(KS K 0590), oil repellency(AATCC 118), water resistance(KS K 0591, AATCC 42), water vapor transmission (KS A 1013) and air permeability(KS K 0570). The results of this study were as follows : 1) The untreated Sontara showed much more amount of pesticide penetration than untreated Tyvek and Kimlon, while the treated Sontara showed little amount of pesticide penetration. 2) After laundering, the amount of pesticide residue in the untreated and treated Sontara was less than that in Tyvek and in Kimlon. 3) Water- and oil-repellent finish improved water repellency, oil repellency, and water resistance of specimens. 4) The untreated Sontara and Kimlon showed higher water vapor transmission and air permeability than untreated Tyvek. Water vapor transmission and air permeability of treated specimen decreased compared to those of untreated.
