  • The water-vapour transmission ratios (WVTR) of the various commercial polymer films have been investigated at the constant pressure and relative humidity (RH). Water proofnesses, the reciprocals of WVTR for the various samples, were determined using a cup device and maintaining the sample films at a constant temperature ($40{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) and a constant R. H ($90{\pm}2%$) for 24 hours. The following order of the relative proofness was observed; oriented polypropyrene (O.PP) > high density polyethylene (HDPE, Inflation) > high density polyethylene (HDPE. T-die) > casted polypropylene (C. PP) > nonoriented polyester (N. PET) > low density polyethylene (LDPE) > oriented polyester (O. PET) > rigid polyvinyl chloride (Rigid PVC) > semirigid polyvinyl chloride (Semirigid PVC) > nonrigid polyvinyl chloride (Nonrigid PVC) > oriented nylon (O. Nylon) > nonoriented nylon (N. Nylon). And water proofness order was also observed to decrease with the temperature rising; HDPE (T-die) > C. PP > O. PET > LDPE > O. Nylon. The activation energies of LDPE, HDPE (T-die), C. PP, O. PET and O.Nylon films were 12.0, 11.1, 11.4, 11.7, 14.1 kcal/mole, respectively. The WVTR's of the films were increased with the polarity of polymer and the addition of plasticizer in PVC, decreased with the increase of the film thickness and mechanical orientation. The WVTR's of the laminated films O. PP/LDPE, N.Nylon/LDPE, C.PP/LDPE were also more dependent on the film thickness than the WVTR's of the single films.

  • The basic medium oil modified alkyd resin was synthesized from linseed oil fatty acid(LOFA), phthalic anhydride(PAA), trimellitic anhydride(TMA ), and trimthylol propane(TMP) by condensation polymerization at $230^{\circ}C$. TMPTA modified water-reducible alkyd resins were synthesized with TMPTA graft copolymerization onto the basic resin at $180^{\circ}C$. Acid value of the resin was controlled by the addition of TMA and N,N-Dimethylethanol amino(DMEA) was used as an neutralizing agent to prepare water-reducible alkyd. To evaluate the optimum formulation for anionic alkyd resin, water proofness and water reducibility were estimated from the acid value or TMA contents. The effect of TMPTA on the graft copoymerization of the resin was studied by measuring molecular weight, glass transition temperature(Tg), viscosity, and gel contents. The suitable balance of water proofness and water reducibility of the resin was obtained at range of 5.3~7.0wt.% of TMA contents or 40~50 of acid value of basic resin. The molecular weight, viscosity, and gel contents of water-reducible alkyd resin were increased according to the TMPTA graft copolymerization, but Tg was decreased.

  • Polymer-modified mortars have an excellent water proofness and water retentivity. Therefore, the study on the moisture diffusion behavior- is very important. The purpose of' this study is to investigate the effects of relative humidity and moisture content in mortars on the moisture diffusion, and the relationship between the shrinkage and moisture diffusion coefficient of polymer-modified mortars cured at $20{\circ}C$ 50% R.H and 80% R.H. The pore size distribution of the polymer-modified mortars was also measured. From the test results, the relative humidity and moisture content in mortars influenced on the moisture diffusion of polymer-modified mortars. The shrinkage and moisture diffusion coefficient of polymer-modified mortars cured at $20{\circ}C$ 50% R.H. was bigger than that cured at $20{\circ}C$ 80% R.H.. and decreased with increasing polymer-cement ratio regardless of polymer type.

  • This research evaluates the changes in the comfort-related properties of high-density fabric, such as moisture permeability and waterproofness, in order to assess the relative importance of laundry conditions for clothing properties after repeated laundering and suggest the best laundering conditions for high-density fabric through the identification of the most influential factor. A commercial high-density fabric was washed 25 times in a drum-type washer using nine different laundry conditions based on profiles derived from a fractional factorial design. To evaluate the changes in the comfort-related properties of the fabric, pore size, air permeability, water vapor transport, water repellency, and water resistance were measured. The comfort-related properties of the fabric deteriorated after repeated laundering by the damaged surface finish; in addition, the damaged surface also changed the pore size. As a result, the water repellency and water resistance decreased. The detergent was the most responsible factor to change the properties among the four factors of detergent, hardness, temperature, and RPM. The best laundering conditions for the fabric was a neutral detergent, soft water of 70ppm, a temperature of $15^{\circ}C$, and 30rpm.

  • Based upon the results of the previous work, the experiments are concentrated on the improvement of the durability of rubber coated fabrics as a rain garment material. To obtain a much lighter and durable coated fabric, several kinds of light weight cotton prints having almost equal density in warp and fillingwise were chosen. Rubber coating on these prints was made by topping and spreading process using rubber compound of various viscosity, and the physical properties of final product were analysed and interpreted in terms of adhesion and durability. The results are as follows. 1. Any noticeable difference between two coating processes was not found in terms of physical properties. 2. Base fabrics should be dipped once into a dilute rubber compound before coating operation in order to obtain a uniform adhesion and physical properties, and the optimum range of the viscosity of dipping paste are from 100 poise to 200 poise. 3. Generally, the tearing strength of the coated fabrics is inversely proportional to the adhesion. 4. It was assumed that the increase of the water proofness after water immersion on the finished material which have dense base fabric is chiefly due to the swelling of the cellulosic fiber.

  • In a range of forms, such as latex, water-soluble polymer, liquid resin, and monomer, polymer dispersions have been widely used in the construction industry as cement modifiers because of their excellent properties, such as acid-resistance, water-proofness, and good ductility in mortar and concrete. Polymer cement slurry (polymer-modified slurry) is made of cement and polymer dispersions, with a high polymer-cement ratio of 50% or more. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the water permeability and drying shrinkage of polymer cement mortar (polymer-modified mortar) and cement concrete coated by polymer cement slurry. The polymer cement mortar and cement concrete are prepared with various polymer types, polymer-cement ratios and curing methods, and are tested for water permeability, drying shrinkage and strength. The test results showed thatthe weight of permeable water of polymer cement mortar decreases with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio, reaching a minimum at the polymer-cement ratio of 20%. In particular, the weight of permeable water of St/BA-modified mortar with a polymer-cement ratio of 20% coated with St/BA-modified slurry is about 1/55 that of unmodified mortar. The EVA- and St/BA-modified slurries coated on cement concrete have about 4 or 5 times higher drying shrinkage compared to cement concrete. The strength of polymer cement mortars tends to increase with a higher polymer-cement ratio, and is considerably higher than that of unmodified mortar. It is thus concluded that polymer cement mortars coated by polymer cement slurry are effective for industrial application, and have superior properties such as waterproofness and strengths, compared with conventional cement mortar.

  • This has been carried out how the sericin insoluble fixations of raw silk should be with potassium alum. This is learned from the leather tanning technique which the process works with collagen, a kind of proteins. Former reports had shown such works, however, they did not consider the moisture absorbability after their process reports by using chromium alum, formalin or vinyl acetate grafting. This report, however, paid attention to protect such absorbability as well as sericin fixation, so far it may be useful for plactical use of silk. In order to clear how the sericin is fixed with such chemicals, fundermental mechanism of weding process and chemical reaction against proteins were also discussed. The obtained results of the report are as followings. 1. Alum should not be treated for raw silk with high temperature bath like other reports because such treat induces raw silk to be stiffly after the treat. 2. It is recommended that raw silk should be treated with alum solution at room temperature for more than three hours. Even in this case, the use of only alum with raw silk could to fix sericin some how, but it increased the water proofness of the silk. 3. 1% of alum solution was found to be able to fix the sericin of raw silk. 4. In case we consider only sericin fixations, a combination treat of 1% alum for three hours and 0.5% NaOH for ten minutes method showed the best result. 5. In case we consider sericin insoluble fixation and moisture absorbility, the reversive combination of the above process was found to be the best results. 6. Sericin fixing evidence was shown with drying feature curves of wed each treated silk where we could to analyze how the chemical nature is changed after each treat. 7. Deguming ratio may be obtained up to 4.3% after the alum combination treat with regular raw silk. Such ratio was considered to be good enough for the purpose when the textile is washed with warm soap water. 8. Moisture absorbability of the combination treat of alum and NaOH was found to be good enough as well as non treated silk. 9. The tenacity and elongation of the treated silk did not change even after three month. 10. Above all, this method is considered to be better process than other coloured fixing (tannin method. Cr-alum method) or smell fixing (formalin method. vinyl acetate method).
