  • This paper presents the results of a study of the effectiveness of cathodic protection with insoluble ICCP anode in reinforced concrete structures. Experimental tests were carried out on reinforced concrete specimens with 3 different commercial anodes for ICCP system in order to compare the effectiveness of cathodic protection. Results have shown that the kinds of anode for ICCP is irrelevant to the effectiveness of cathodic protection, In case of ICCP, the performance of cathodic protection has no relationship to the kinds of anode especially in concrete specimens with sea water condition. It has been found slightly more effective at Ti-Rod anode in fresh water condition and Ti-Mesh anode in atmospheric condition.

  • Pot experiment was conducted to find out the effect of lime application on yield and chemical composition of burley tobacco in 1986, Lime increased exchangeable calcium and pH of soil, but decreased Al, Fe and Mn concentrations. Yield was increased by lime application, however lime could not be caused to yield increasing in the soil with high calcium contents. Cored leaves of limed Plot contained higher Mg. K, total nitrogen, NO3-nitrogen, water soluble and insoluble ash, alkalinity number of water soluble and insoluble ash, citric and malic acid, but lower Fe, Mn, protein-nitrogen, NH3-nitrogen, nicotine petroleum ether extract, palmitic and linolenic acid concentrations than those of unlined plot. The linoleic acid and volatile neutral constituents of cured leaves were not affected by liming. Lime increased yield, however it did not affect leaf duality in respect to chemical characteristics, suggesting that liming should be necessary for tobacco cultivation.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the fundamental characteristics of proteins effecting on Korean wheat flour quality. Mixing properties and protein contents of Eunpa, Allgreu, and Woori showed soft wheat characteristics. Tapdong had strong dough stability and high protein content like hard wheat flour. However, even though Greu had a high protein content, the dough strength was very weak like soft wheat flour. No major difference was observed in protein solubility with water, 0.1N NaCl, 70% ethyl alcohol, 0.1 N acetic acid solution and in sulfur and disulfide contents between Korean wheat flours and imported flours. However, DNS (Dark Norther Spring) had more contents of acid insoluble and SDS insoluble proteins compared with Korean wheat varieties. PAGE pattern of Tapdong was very similar to imported wheat flours at the high molecular weight regions and characteristic high molecular weight glutenin subunits were observed over 116 kD protein molecular weight region from 4 Korean wheat flours such as Eunpa, Woori, Allgreu, and Greu.

  • Radiostrontium is one of fallouts. It can be absorbed through intestine and causing radiation injury to bones. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the inhibitory effect of 10% chitosan (water soluble and insoluble) and 10% alginate (water soluble and insoluble) on radiostrontium adsorption. Water soluble and insoluble chitosans and alginates were given to 10 NIH male mice in each group for 7 days. At the 7th day, 74 MBq of $^{85}Sr$ were given through orogastric tube. Chitosans and alginates were given for additional 7 days. During the 7 days, radioactivities of feces were counted daily. Finally animals were sacrificed, and radioactivities of bones were counted. Fecal excretion was significantly higher in chitosan and alginate group as compared to control from the 1st day (p < 0.01). Water soluble chitosan group showed highest fecal excretion. Bony retention was significantly lower in the treated group than the control (p < 0.01). There was no difference among treated groups. In conclusion, both water soluble and insoluble chitosans and alginates were effective agents on lowering orally ingested radiostrontium ($^{85}Sr$).

  • Solid lipid microspheres (SLMs) were prepared using various lipids and solidifying agents, in order to enhance the gastrointestinal absorption of Cyclosporine A (Cs A) which is a practically water-insoluble drug with low systemic bioavailability. Egg lecithin and HCO-60 (polyoxyethylated 60 mol, hydrogenated castor oil) were used as lipids. Stearic acid and stearyl alcohol were used as solidifying agents. Emulsion concentrates containing Cs A were prepared by mixing the melted lipid and solidifying agent with water, employing bile salts as a cosurfactant. SLMs were obtained by dispersing the warm emulsion concentrate in cold distilled water under mechanical stirring, followed by freeze drying. Physical characteristics of each SLM were investigated by particle size analysis, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Mean particle size of SLMs was in the range of 30 to 40.mu.m. The SLMs were in good appearance with spherical shape before freeze drying, but were deformed partially after freeze drying. Drug loading efficiencies of SLMs were observed as high as 80 to 90% in average. The systemic bioavailability of Cs A from different SLM formula was investigated in rats following oral administration. Cs A in whole blood was extracted and assayed by HPLC. SLMs revealed the higher bioavailabilities than the standard formula based on the marketed product. SLMs might have several advantages over standard formula for enhanced gastrointestinal absorption, controlled release properties, high loading capacity of the water-insoluble drug, and feasibility of solid dosage forms with better stability in storage.

  • The elemental characteristics of atmospheric aerosols were investigated as a function of particle size and water solubility. The aerosol particles were samples at 12 individual size ranges between 0.01 and 30㎛. Collected aerosol particles were separated into both soluble and insoluble components. The concentrations of 15 elements in both components were determined by a PIXE analysis using a 2.0 MeV-proton beam. In general, the mass size distribution of particulate matter was represented as a bimodal distribution. The maximum rations of S in July and December were 5.5 and 3.8 %, and they appeared in the size range of 0.47∼1.17㎛(stage No. 6 or 7) . The ratios of a S at non-separated size were 3.1 and 2.2 % in July and December, respectively, On the other hand, the maximum rations of Si in July and December were 7.0 and 5.4% and they appeared in the size range of 5.1∼30㎛(stage No. 0∼2). The ratios of Si at the non-separated size were 2.1 and 1.8% in July and December, respectively, The mass diameter of 12 elements ranged between 0.59㎛ of S and 3.20 of Fe. More than 90% of atmospheric aerosols consisted of the light elements such as C, N, O, H and Al. The soluble component was dominant in the smaller size range and the insoluble component in the larger size range. Large portions of Si. Ti and Fe existed in insoluble state. By contrast, S, Cl, Ca, Zn and Br were dissolved in water.

  • Oxidative stress or accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leads neuronal cellular death and dysfunction, and it contributes to neuronal degenerative disease such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and stroke. Glutamate is one of the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS). Glutamate contributes to fast synaptic transmission, neuronal plasticity, outgrowth and survival, behavior, learning and memory. In spite of these physiological functions, high concentration of glutamate causes neuronal cell damage, acute insults and chronic neuronal neurodegenerative diseases. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) enzyme plays an important role of cellular antioxidant system against oxidant injury. NNMBS020, the water-insoluble fraction of the 70% EtOH extract of root barks of Dictamnus dasycarpus, showed dominant neuroprotective effects on glutamate-induced neurotoxicity in mouse hippocampal HT22 cells by induced the expression of HO-1 and increased HO activity. In mouse hippocampal HT22 cells, NNMBS020 makes the nuclear accumulation of Nrf2 and stimulates extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway. The ERK MAPK pathway inhibitor significantly reduced NNMBS020-induced HO-1 expression, whereas the JNK and p38 inhibitors did not. In conclusion, the water-insoluble fraction of the 70% EtOH extract of root barks of D. dasycarpus (NNMBS020) significantly protect glutamate-induced oxidative damage by induction of HO-1 via Nrf2 and ERK pathway in mouse hippocampal HT22 cells.
