  • A persulfate(PS)/sulfidated microscale zero-valent iron(S-mZVI) system was tested for treating a soil contaminated with phenol. Sulfidation of bare mZVI was conducted using a mechanochemical process utilizing a ball mill in order to improve persulfate activation capacity and stability of unmodified mZVI. The synthesized S-mZVI performed markedly better than the bare mZVI in activating PS. The optimum molar ratio of sulfur to mZVI was around 0.12. In the soil slurry experiments, a very rapid and complete removal of phenol was observed at the optimum molar ratios of PS to S-mZVI of 2:1 and PS to phenol of 16:1. The phenol removal efficiencies decreased as the water content of the slurries decreased. This was believed to be due to increased soil oxidant demand as the amount of soil was increased as relative to the water content. To evaluate the field applicability of the process, slurry experiments adopting high soil contents were carried out that simulated in-situ soil mixing conditions. These experiments resulted in substantially compromised degradation efficiencies of 54.3% and 43.8% within 4 hours. The current study generally shows that the PS/S-mZVI process has a potential to be developed into a remediation technology for soils contaminated with organics.

  • Plant biomass has been proposed as an alternative source of petroleum-based chemical compounds. Especially, aromatic chemical compounds can be obtained from lignin by depolymerization processes because the lignin consist of complex aromatic materials. In this study, kraft lignin, the largest emitted substance among several kinds of lignin in Korea, was used as a starting material and was characterized by solid-state $^{13}C$-Muclear Magnetic Resonance($^{13}C$-NMR), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FT-IR), Elemental Analysis(EA). The depolymerization of kraft lignin was studied at water-phenol mixture solvent in near critical region and the experiments were conducted using a batch type reactor. The effects of water-to-phenol ratio and reaction temperature($300-400^{\circ}C$) were investigated to determine the optimum operating conditions. Additionally, the effects of formic acid as a hydrogen-donor solvent instead of $H_2$ gas were examined. The chemical species and quantities in the liquid products were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy(GC-MS), and solid residues(char) were analyzed using FT-IR. GC-MS analysis confirmed that the aromatic chemicals such as anisole, o-cresol(2-methylphenol), p-cresol(4-methylphenol), 2-ethylphenol, 4-ethylphenol, dibenzofuran, 3-methyl cabazole and xanthene were produced when phenol was added in the water as a co-solvent.

  • Styrene-Maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA) was prepared by the radical copolmerization of styrene and maleic anhydride using ${\alpha}-{\alpha}'$ azobis(isobutyronitrile) as an initiatrr. SMA was further reacted with m-amino phenol to obtain aminophenol-substituted SMR (mSMA). Sulfonated SMA and mSMA were also prepared by the reaction of copolymers with sulfuric acid The copolyniers were characterized by infrared spectroscopy. It was found from the results of elemental analysis that the substitution degree of aminophenol in the mSMR is 44% and the degree is lowered to 35% after sulfonation. The percentage of copolymers adsorbed on the surface of cement particles was increased with a decrease of added copolymers. While, the arnourit of sulfonated SMA absorbed on the surface of cement particles was larger than that of the sulfonated mSMA The copolymers synthesized in this study are probably expected as a high range water reducer for coiicxte.

  • The feasibility of fly ash was evaluated as an alternative liner material to the conventional clay liner of landfills through modeling and laboratory experiments. In order to consider the effect of unsaturation on water flow through the liner, analyses were made to compare flow characteristics in saturated liner with that of unsaturated one. Contaminant migration characteristics in liners were investigated by batch experiment and modeling, in which phenol was employed as a model was solved by numerical techniques of finite difference method and predictor-corrector method to deal with high non-linearity. Sequential method was used to handle the system of differential equations. Results show that the alternative liner material is more capable of cutting off water flow in unsaturated condition and in preventing phenol from passing through it. It can be seen that, under the flow conditions considered in this study, the conventional saturation approach underestimates the amount of water passing through the liner and doers the cut-off capability against phenol significantly.

  • This work is a fundamental study for applying hybrid process coupling adsorption with microfiltration to waste-water treatment. Phenol was separated by adsorption on powdered activated carbon, adsorbed phenol with activated carbon was separated by microfiltration. As the particle size in suspension increased, filtration resistance decreased, and effect of particle concentration on resistance was less pronounced. The rate of uptake was greatly dependent on the degree of phenol loading. For a smaller amounts of activated carbon, the change of permeate concentration before break point and phenol loading with time were steeper than in the case of large amounts. Permeate concentration before break point decreased with decreasing particle size, this could be due to the increase of outer surface of particle and film mass transfer coefficient.

  • This study presents a technical perspective to the fate characteristics of phenol and m-cresol, which represent some of the most common organic chemicals found in chemical spill accidents, and likely to persist in soil and groundwater due to their highly stable physicochemical properties. Some cases of domestic and foreign chemical accidents linked to phenol and m-cresol contamination were compiled. Due to their low organic carbon-water partitioning coefficient (Koc), phenol and m-cresol tend to migrate into groundwater and remained as dissolved phase. On the other hands, phenol and m-cresol can be readily decomposed by microbes in soil and groundwater under appropriate conditions. Therefore, the fate characteristics of these chemicals are highly contingent on environmental conditions. Thus, if a great quantity of leakage is occurred by chemical accidents, the up-to-date and correct information about fate characteristics taking into account both the chemical and environmental conditions is greatly needed to minimized the potential hazards from these chemicals.

  • In this study AOPs of $O_3/UV$ radiation, $O_3/Mg(OH)_2/UV$ radiation and $O_3/MgO/UV$ radiation system for phenol treatment in aqueous solution was performed in a laboratory scale circulating batch reacter. Flow rate of ozone 1.0 L/min, ozone concentrations $150{\pm}10mg/L$ was maintained constantly at the above-mentioned oxidation processes. During the oxidation processes the $COD_{Cr}$ and TOC was measured in the composition. The pseudo first-order rate constants of the processes was $5.12{\times}10^{-5}$, $1.19{\times}10^{-4}$ and $1.79{\times}10^{-4}sec^{-1}$, and the activation energy was 3.03, 1.79 and $2.32kcal{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ at $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. It was found that both $Mg(OH)_2$ and MgO had remarkable accelerations on degradation of phenol and removal of COD in water. On this basis, $O_3/MgO/UV$ system is an effective and feasible routes for catalytic ozonation of phenol in water.

  • Antioxidant activity and antimutagenic activities with and without simulated gastric digestion of hot water extracts from white and yellow onions were investigated as compared to BHT and ascorbic acid as control Contents of total phenol and flavonoid in hot water extract of yellow onion were higher than those of white one. The scavenging activity of hydrogen peroxide of both extracts were increased in direct proportion to added their concentration. Antioxidant activity and reducing power of the hot water extract were elevated through analysis of $\beta-carotene-linoleate$ system and were lower than those of BHT and ascorbic acid. Antimutagenic activity after simulated gastric digestion of hot water extract of white and yellow onions was observed against mutagen IG and MNNG on Salmonella typhimurium TA80 and TA100. Extract of yellow onion was higher in antimutagenic activity than that of white one. In conclusion, these results suggested that phenol and flavonoid in hot water extract from yellow and white onions may play an important role in the antioxidant and antimutagenic activities.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of the amount of water added prior to fermentation on the quality of bokbunja (Rubus coreanus Miq.) wine produced. Water was added at 0-fold (A), 1-fold (B), 2-fold (C), 3-fold (D), and 4-fold (E) of the fresh bokbunja weight (w/w), prior to fermentation. Although the amount of bokbunja wine obtained after fermentation increased in proportion to the amount of water added prior to fermentation, the total acidity of the bokbunja wine, adjusted for the weight of bokbunja used in the fermentation process, increased. Moreover, the total phenol and flavonoid content (mg) per weight (g) of bokbunja, in (B), (C), (D), and (E) were 2.86-4.42 and 2.58-3.01 times higher, respectively, than those in (A). These data suggest that different types of bokbunja wines can be produced and different contents of total phenol can be obtained by simply changing the amount of water added prior to fermentation.
