  • To acquire preliminary data for the control of total nitrogen (TN) in S sewage treatment plant, which processes merging food waste and sewage, the effect of reject water on the total nitrogen in the effluent was examined in this study. Water quality data for the plant during the winter period were applied to calculate the mass balance. It was calculated that at least more than 231 kg/d TN should be removed to control the TN concentration in the effluent. Assuming 18 ppm as the goal TN concentration in the effluent, about 941 kg/d TN should be removed from this plant. Approximately 10% more TN should be removed than at present to achieve this result. It was observed that dewatering the filtrate had a considerably greater effect on the total nitrogen in the effluent than the reject waters. The dewatered filtrate contained 1,399kg/d TN. The contribution of the dewatered filtrate to the TN concentration in the effluent was 0.183, which was 7 to 23 times greater than the other reject waters. In addition, the amount of total nitrogen from the reject water, with the exception of the dewatering filtrate, was lower than the amount of TN that should be removed from S sewage treatment plant. Therefore, it was concluded that one of the most effective methods for controlling the TN concentration in effluent was the removal of the TN contained in the dewatering filtrate.

  • This study investigated the effect of soy protein hydrolysates (SPH) prepared by varying subcritical media on the physicochemical properties of pork patties. For resource of SPH, two different soybean species (Glycine max Merr.) of Daewonkong (DWK) and Saedanbaek (SDB) were selected. SPH was prepared by subcritical processing at 190℃ and 25 MPa under three different of media (water, 20% ethanol and 50% ethanol). Solubility and free amino group content revealed that water was better to yield larger amount of SPH than ethanol/water mixtures, regardless of species. Molecular weight (Mw) distribution of SPH was also similar between two species, while slightly different Mw distribution was obtained by subcritical media. For pork patty application, 50% ethanol treatment showed clear red color comparing to control after 14 d of storage. In addition, ethanol treatment had better oxidative stability than control and water treatment based on thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) analysis. For eating quality, although 20% ethanol treatment in SDB showed slightly higher cooking loss than control, generally addition of SPH did not affect the water-binding properties and hardness of pork patties. Consequently, the present study indicated that 50% ethanol was the best subcritical media to produce SPH possessing antioxidant activity, and the SPH produced from DWK exhibited better antioxidant activity than that produced SDB.

  • Herbs and plants widely used for the ecological restoration were selected for germination rate analysis under treatment of microorganisms to determine ideal treatment conditions and medium for enhanced germination rate. Albizzia julibrissin, when submerged in a nutrient medium or distilled water, presented a decrease in germination period rather than increase in germination rate. When treated with microorganism culture solution (JM-2) for 24 hours, 90% germination was achieved in two days, which is sufficient evidence to conclude that such treatment accelerates the germination of Albizzia julibrissin. Germination period decreased for Lespedeza cyrtobotrya samples submerged in microorganism solution for 15 and 48 hours, however, increases in germination rates were not observed. Sample treated in the solution for 24 hours had increased germination rate and enhanced germination period. Microorganism solution treatment had a negative effect on germination for Lespedeza cuneata, unlike Lespedeza cyrtobotrya and Albizzia julibrissin. Microorganism treated seeds of Lepsedeza cuneata had a lower germination rate than that of the control with no treatment. However, submerging treatments in a nutrient medium or distilled water for 24 to 48 hours were proven effective with higher germination rates than control sample with no treatment. • In pulp and papermaking process, enzymatic treatment of pulp fibres has been a topic of increasing interest in last decade. Lots of patents, papers and research reports were published on the application of enzymes in the fields of enzymatic bleaching, deinking, slime control, pitch control, waste water treatment and fibre modification. Cellulase and hemicellulase are the principal enzymes used for the modification of fibre property. This study was carried out for determinating the behaviors of enzyme to pulp fibres. A commercial enzyme, Denimax BT which is consisted with cellulase and hemicellulase, was treated to the kraft pulp produced from domestic hardwood mixtures. Results were mainly concentrated on the behaviors of freeness, drainability and fines content of fibres, and physical properties of paper with enzyme treatment. The freeness levels and dewatering ability were developed, and the fines contents were decreased. The creation of fines were controlled by the method of pre-enzyme treatment prior to fibre beating. The mechanical strength of paper, like tensile, burst, tear strength and folding endurance, were remarkably improved by the pre-enzyme treatment.

  • Natural organic matter (NOM) is a primary component of fouling in low-pressure membrane filtration, either solely, or in concert with colloidal particles. Various preventive measures to interfere with NOM fouling have been developed and extensively tested, such as coagulation, oxidation, ion exchange, carbon adsorption, and mineral oxide adsorption. Therefore, this article aims to conduct a literature review covering the topics of low-pressure membrane processes, NOM characteristics and fouling behaviors, and diverse fouling control strategies. In-depth explanations and discussion are made regarding why some treatment options are able to remove NOM from source water, but do not reduce fouling. This review provides insight for hybridized membrane processes with respect to NOM removal and fouling mitigation in water treatment.

  • In large vessels, proper water level must be maintained with a balance for right and left equilibrium by absorbing or draining sea water in ballast water tank. However, this ship's ballast-water can be drained marine organisms to local sea area by world trade and this can be a source of ecological disturb. In order to solve these problems, marine organisms must be removed in accordance with the international covenant for the emission of microorganisms. By this reason, the seawater electrolysis rectifier of low-voltage high-current rectifiers with excellent ability for microbial treatment is required. In this paper, PSFB converter will be discussed for the seawater electrolysis rectifier. Furthermore, a new output control method with the power limit operation under the limited maximum voltage condition is proposed for this rectifier. The simulation for the proposed current control method for PSFB Converter is shown using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Finally the usefulness of the proposed control method is presented by the experimental results.

  • In biofloc culture for olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, the possibility of antibiotics treatment was investigated against edwardsiellosis. After inducing edwardsiellosis by immersion in Edwardsiella tarda 1.2 × 105/mL suspension, the survival trends on various biofloc water management and some physiological changes were observed. For biofloc water management, six types of water treatments were carried out, which were no exchange without antibiotics as negative control, the exchange to stored biofloc water, the exchange to stored biofloc water with 20% flow-through, the exchange to fresh biofloc water, half fresh biofloc water and half sea water, and the complete flow-through. There was no significant physicochemical change on water qualities in any type. The exchange to fresh biofloc water was shown the highest survival ratio as 72.3%, and in case of stored biofloc water with 20% flow-through, the survival ratio was also significantly high as 62%. Plasma glucose, cholesterol, total protein, calcium, and magnesium were analyzed as physiological index. Mostly, there was no significant change, but plasma cholesterol showed an initial decrease in low survival group, and an initial increase with high survival group. Consequently, antibiotic treatment against a bacterial disease during biofloc culture is possible as long as the biofloc water management follow along properly.
