Critical heat flux (CHF) is the thermal limit of a phenomenon in which a phase change occurs during heating (such as bubbles forming on a metal surface used to heat water), which suddenly decreases the heat transfer efficiency, thus causing localized overheating of the heating surface. The enhancement of CHF can increase the safety margins and allow operation at higher heat fluxes; thus, it can increase the economy. A very interesting characteristic of nanofluids is their ability to significantly enhance the CHF. Nanofluids are nanotechnology-based colloidal dispersions engineered through the stable suspension of nanoparticles. All experiments were performed in round tubes with an inner diameter of 0.01041 m and a length of 0.5 m under low pressure and low flow (LPLF) conditions at a fixed inlet temperature using water, 0.01 vol.% $Al_2O_3$/water nanofluid, and SiC/water nanofluid. It was found that the CHF of the nanofluids was enhanced and the CHF of the SiC/water nanofluid was more enhanced than that of the $Al_2O_3$/water nanofluid.
Domestic solar hot water system can be divided into a passive type and an active type. In a passive type the storage tank is horizontally mounted immediately above the solar collectors. No pumping is required as the hot water naturally rises into the storage tank from the collectors through thermo-siphon flow. While, in an active type the storage tank is ground- or floor-mounted and is below the level of the collectors; a circulating pump moves water or heat transfer fluid between the storage tank and the collectors. We installed two types solar hot water systems consisting of the same storage tank and collectors at the same place, and were measured and compared typical operating characteristics under the same external conditions. In particular, the daily system performance was presented through the stirring test after the sunset. The results show that the amount of solar radiation obtained for an active type were less than a passive type on a cloudy day, because the operation of the circulation pump stops frequently took place on that day. However, on a sunny day, depending on the stable operation of the circulation pump, the amount of solar radiation obtained for an active type were increased than a passive type.

In this work, modeling and analysis of thermal effects laser drilling under water for ceramics were presented. Laser is a unique tool for machining ceramics due to the characteristic of non-contact material removal. However, ablation by a laser often induces a thermal effect on the material and an increased heat-affected-zone or deposition of debris can be observed on the machined parts. The underwater surrounding improved a heat transfer rate to cooling down the machined part and could prevent any deposition of debris near the machined surfaces and edges. The heat modeling was applied to obtain the temperature distributions as well as temperature gradients between the material and surroundings. The cooling effect of the underwater laser drilling was improved and a more stable temperature distribution was calculated. The actual laser drilling results of ceramic laser drilling were presented to verify the effects of underwater laser drilling.

This study is focused on the evaluation of thermal output of TABS (Thermally Activated Building System). The aim of this study is to evaluate TABS in terms of the temperature difference between heating medium supply temperature ($T_s$) and return temperature ($T_r$), thermal output and the surface temperature distribution according to the design flow rate and the design flow temperature. Through the transient heat transfer simulation using temperature calculation using Crank-Nicolson FDM using Physibel Voltra 6.0 W, the temperature difference between $T_s$ and $T_r$, thermal output and the surface temperature distribution of specific TABS was calculated and evaluated. The results show that specific thermal output and temperature difference at $60^{\circ}C$ of supply water temperature were about 162 $W/m^2$, $13.6^{\circ}C$ respectively.

Flow condensation heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of R22, propylene, propane, DME and isobutane are measured on a horizontal plain tube. The main test section in the experimental flow loop is made of a plain copper tube of 9.52 mm outside diameter and 530 mm length. The refrigerant is cooled by passing cold water through an annulus surrounding the test section. Tests are performed at a fixed refrigerant saturation temperature of $40{\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$ with mass fluxes of 100, 200, $300kg/m^2s$ and heat flux of $7.3\sim7.7kW/m^2$. The data are obtained in the vapor Quality range of $10\sim90%$. Test results show that at same mass flux the flow condensation HTCs of propylene, propane, DME and isobutane are higher than those of R22 by up to 46.8%, 53.3%, 93.5% and 61.6% respectively. Also well-known correlations developed based upon conventional fluorocarbon refrigerants predict the present data within a mean deviation of 30%. Finally, the pressure drop increase as the mass flux and Quality increase and isobutane shows the highest pressure drop due to its lowest vapor pressure among the fluids tested.
A multiphysics model analysis including moisture transport, heat transfer and solid mechanics and experiments on the normal and light weight concrete were carried out in order to study the effect of preabsorbed water in the light weight aggregates on the drying and shrinkage characteristics of concrete. Consequently, with fixed water-cement ratio, loss of water content of normal and light weight concrete were compared and the results showed that the lightweight concrete lost less moist than the normal concrete in early age and long term which was by moist supply effect. Accordingly, shrinkage strain size and distribution of lightweight concrete were decreased, and shrinkage reducing effect was efficient in early age with water cement ratio 0.3 and in both early age, and long term with water cement ratio 0.5. The comparison of analysis results and exaperimental results indicate that characteristic values of moisture transport and the relation humidity and shrinkage strain from this study are resonable for application for other differential shrinkage analysis in lightweight concrete.

The impregnation of solid foods into the surrounding hypotonic or hypertonic solution was explored as a method to infuse NaCl in pork loin cube without altering its matrix. Mass transfer kinetics using a diffusive model as the mathematical model for moisture gain/loss and salt gain and the resulting textural properties were studied for the surrounding solutions of NaCl 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 15% (w/w). It was possible to access the effects of brine concentration on the direction of the resulting water flow, quantify water and salt transfer, and confirm tenderization effect by salt infusion. For brine concentrations up to 10% it was verified that meat samples gained water, while for processes with 15% concentration, pork loin cubes lost water. The effective diffusion coefficients of salt ranged from 2.43×10-9 to 3.53×10-9 m2/s, while for the values of water ranged from 1.22×10-9 to 1.88×10-9 m2/s. The diffusive model was able to represent well salt gain rates using a single parameter, i.e. an effective diffusion coefficient of salt through the meat. However, it was not possible to find a characteristic effective diffusion coefficient for water transfer. Within the range of experimental conditions studied, salt-impregnated samples by 5% (w/w) brine were shown with minimum hardness, chewiness and shear force.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze two-phase flows of the hydrogen recirculation system. Two-phase flow modeling is one of the great challenges in the classical sciences. As with most problems in engineering, the interest in two-phase flow is due to its extreme importance in various industrial applications. In hydrogen recirculation systems of fuel cell, the changes in pressure and temperature affect the phase change of mixture. Therefore, two-phase flow analysis of the hydrogen recirculation system is very important. Two-phase computation fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations, using a commercial CFD package FLUENT 6.2, were employed to calculate the gas-liquid flow. A two-phase flow calculation was conducted to solve continuity, momentum, energy equation for each phase. Then, the mass transfer between water vapor and liquid water was calculated. Through an experiment to measure production of liquid water with change of pressure, the analysis model was verified. The predictions of rate of condensed liquid water with change of pressure were within an average error of about 5%. A comparison of experimental and computed data was found to be in good agreement. The variations of performance, properties, mass fraction and two-phase flow characteristic of mixture with resepct to the fuel cell power were investigated.
Internal mass transfer during osmotic dehydration of gingers in sugar solution was examined as a function of concentration, temperature and immersion time of those solutions using moisture loss, sugar gain, molality and rate parameter. Influence of osmotic dehydration on browning reaction and texture properties of air dried rehydrated was also evaluated. Increasing the concentration and temperature of sugar solutions increased moisture loss, sugar gain, molality and rate parameter. Water loss and sugar gain were rapid in the first 3 min and then changed gentle slope. Moisture loss during osmotic dehydration using a sugar solution $(60\;Brix,\;80^{\circ}C)$ with 18 min immersion time was 40.05 g moisture/100 g wet ginger which was 52% reduction of initial moisture content in ginger (83.02%, wet basis). The changes of rate parameter were more affected by temperature than by concentration of sugar solution. Minimum browning degree (O.D.=0.027) was carried out by osmotic dehydration in sugar solution $(40\;or\;50\;Brix,\;80^{\circ}C)$ with 15 min immersion time compared to control (O.D.=0.132). Influence of osmotic dehydration on puncture forces of 3 min rehydrated ginger in boiling water were $22{\sim}34%$ of reduction, while blanching treatment had not affected compared to those of control.

A light water reactor (LWR) fuel rod consists of zirconium alloy cladding tube and uranium dioxide pellets with a slight gap between them. The modeling of heat transfer across the gap between fuel pellets and the protective cladding is essential to understanding fuel behavior under irradiated conditions. Many researchers have been developing fuel performance codes based on finite element method (FE) to calculate temperature, stress and strain for multidimensional analysis. The gap conductance model for multi-dimension is difficult issue in terms of convergence and nonlinearity because gap conductance is function of gap thickness which depends on mechanical analysis at each iteration step. In this paper, virtual link gap element (VLG) has been proposed to resolve convergence issue and nonlinear characteristic of multidimensional gap conductance. In terms of calculation accuracy and convergence efficiency, the proposed VLG model has been evaluated for variable cases.
