While high-definition precipitation maps with a 270 m spatial resolution are available for South Korea, there is little information on geospatial availability of precipitation water for the famine - plagued North Korea. The restricted data access and sparse observations prohibit application of the widely used PRISM (Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model) to North Korea for fine-resolution mapping of precipitation. A hybrid method which complements the PRISM grid with a sub-grid scale elevation function is suggested to estimate precipitation for remote areas with little data such as North Korea. The fine scale elevation - precipitation regressions for four sloping aspects were derived from 546 observation points in South Korea. A 'virtual' elevation surface at a 270 m grid spacing was generated by inverse distance weighed averaging of the station elevations of 78 KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) synoptic stations. A 'real' elevation surface made up from both 78 synoptic and 468 automated weather stations (AWS) was also generated and subtracted from the virtual surface to get elevation difference at each point. The same procedure was done for monthly precipitation to get the precipitation difference at each point. A regression analysis was applied to derive the aspect - specific coefficient of precipitation change with a unit increase in elevation. The elevation difference between 'virtual' and 'real' surface was calculated for each 270m grid points across North Korea and the regression coefficients were applied to obtain the precipitation corrections for the PRISM grid. The correction terms are now added to the PRISM generated low resolution (~2.4 km) precipitation map to produce the 270 m high resolution map compatible with those available for South Korea. According to the final product, the spatial average precipitation for entire territory of North Korea is 1,196 mm for a climatological normal year (1971-2000) with standard deviation of 298 mm.

In this study, hydrodynamic characteristics of dam break flow were investigated by a series of experiments. The experiments were performed in a 2-D rectangular flume with obtaining instantaneous images of dam break flow to capture the free surface elevation, and pressure distributions on vertical wall and bottom of the flume. The initial water depth of the dam break flow was changed into 3 different heights, and the gate opening speed was changed during the experiments to study the effect of the gate speed in the dam break flow. Generation of dam break phenomena could be classified into three stages, i.e., very initial, relatively stable, and wall impact stages. The wall impact stage could be separated into 4 generation phases of wall impinge, run-up, overturning, and touchdown phases based on the deformation of the free surface. The free surface elevation were investigated with various initial water depth and compared with the analytic solutions by Ritter (1892). The pressures acting on the vertical wall and bottom were provided for the whole period of dam break flow varying the initial water depth and gate open speed. The measurement results of the dam break flow was compared with the hydrodynamic characteristics of green water phenomena, and it showed that the dam break flow could overestimate the green water loading based on the estimation suggested by Buchner (2002).

This study aims to investigate theoretically and experimentally second-order water level variation. The simple method obtaining second-order water surface elevation and mean water level applicable to both progressive and diffraction wave, mean water level set-down, as well as set-up occurs and it is shown to be in good agreement with the experimental results.
This study investigates the magnitude of errors that can be expected in integrating sediment concentration in a vertical, basede on a single-point measurement, because of errors in input data. Potential error sources, including sampler location, water surface elevation, bed elevation, fall velocity, $\beta$ value, and $\kappa$ value were comparatively examined using data from a special study on the Rio Grande Conveyance channel in New Mexico. It is concluded that simple forms of equations for the vertical distribution of velocity and sediment concentration based on a single-point field sample of suspended sediment. The most uncertain point in the computation is related to the Rouse number z in the equation for the vertical concentration distribution of suspended sediment.
It is well-known fact that tidal difference between the ebb and flow in Yellow Sea is about 9 m so that it has largest value in the world. This wide range of tide level enables Yellow Sea water to intrude into main stream of Han River. However, the study of the tidal reach of Han River has not been carried out thoroughly since North and South Koreas share this region so that topography data and physical measurement are lacking. In this study, to examine the reverse flow and dispersion behavior by tidal effect at the tidal reach of Han River, 2-D river analysis models were applied. RMA-2 was applied to calculate the horizontal velocities and water surface elevation. With the results of velocities and water depth, RAM4, which is 2-D advection-dispersion model based on FEM was simulated to analyze the horizontal transport behavior of BOD.

Urban flood simulation plays a vital role in national flood early warning, prevention and mitigation. In recent studies on 2-dimensional flood modeling, the integrated run-off inundation model is gaining grounds due to its ability to perform in greater computational efficiency. The adaptive quadtree shallow water numerical technique used in this model implements the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) in this simulation, a procedure in which the grid resolution is refined automatically following the flood flow. The method discounts the necessity to create a whole domain mesh over a complex catchment area, which is one of the most time-consuming steps in flood simulation. This research applies the dynamic grid refinement method in simulating the recent extreme flood events in Metro Manila, Philippines. The rainfall events utilized were during Typhoon Ketsana 2009, and Southwest monsoon surges in 2012 and 2013. In order to much more visualize the urban flooding that incorporates the flow within buildings and high-elevation areas, Digital Surface Model (DSM) resolution of 5m was used in representing the ground elevation. Results were calibrated through the flood point validation data and compared to the present flood hazard maps used for policy making by the national government agency. The accuracy and efficiency of the method provides a strong front in making it commendable to use for early warning and flood inundation analysis for future similar flood events.
Here we consider the evaluation of the the dynamic component of the second order force due to wave diffraction by a circular cylinder analytically and numerically. The cylinder is fixed, vertical, surface piercing in water of finite uniform depth. The formulation of the wave-structure interaction is based on the assumption of a homogeneous, ideal, incompressible, and inviscid fluid. The nonlinearity in the wave-structure interaction problem arises from the free surface boundary conditions, namely, dynamic and kinematic free surface boundary conditions. We expand the velocity potential and free surface elevation functions in terms of a small parameter and then consider the second order diffraction problem. After deriving the pressure using Bernoulli's equation, we obtain the analytical expression for the dynamic component of the second order force on the cylinder by integrating the pressure over the wetted surface. The computation of the dynamic force component requires only the first order velocity potential. Numerical results for the dynamic force component are presented.

To classify the surface sedimentary facies using IKONOS image collected over Hwangdo tidal flat in Cheonsu Bay, the optical reflectance was compared for characterizing various sedimentary environments such as grain size, tidal channel pattern and area ratio of surface remnant water. The intertidal DEM (Digital Elevation Model) was generated by echo-sounder for analyzing the relationship between IKONOS image and sedimentary environments including topography. The boundary of the optical reflectance between mud-mixed facies and sand facies was distinct, and discrimination of the associated sandbar feature was also possible. The mud-mixed facies coupled with intricate tidal channels is confined to the relatively hi호 topography of Hwangdo tidal flat. The boundary between mud and mixed flat was indistinct in IKONOS optical reflectance but it would have a difference in the area ratio of surface remnant water. The dark area in the image represented the well developed sand facies having a lot of surface remnant water due to the relatively low surface topography. The overall accuracy of characterizing the surface sediment facies by maximum likelihood classification method was 86.2 %. These results demonstrate that high spatial resolution satellite imagery such as IKONOS coupled with knowledge of grain size, surface remnant water and tidal channel network can be effectively used to characterize the surface sedimentary facies (mud, mixed and sand) network of the tidal flat environments.
The seawater exchange breakwater equipped with an oscillating water channel and water transmitting pipes has a very spectacular function that seawater supply can be greatly increased due to the upsurge of the water surface inside the channel at resonance condition which can be reached when the incident wave period becomes close to the natural period of the channel. The variations of the water level and period inside the channel are very important factors in enhancing the efficiency of sea water exchange, especially when designing the breakwater cross-section in shallow water zone which requires longer resonance period with the elongated horizontal projection of the channel. In the present study, a hydraulic experiment was performed varying the length of the oscillating channel, and the resonance periods and water surface variations are analyzed in terms of water transmission through the pipes.

In order to estimate spatial physicochemical properties of the spring waters in the study area, spring waters at 57 sites were investigated for measuring ten items (temperature, pH, Eh, EC, TDS, DO, salinity, alkalinity, discharge rate, and surface elevation), To compare each component with one another, regression analysis was carried out. Kriging was used to estimate the spatial characteristics and continuity of data in the study area. To solve kriging equation, the semivariogram was calculated using geostatistical software GS$^{+}$(version 3.1). As a result of semivariogram analysis, the data of nine components but surface elevation could be assumed as stationary random function, and ordinary kriging method was used for making contour maps.s.
