Biological assessments are the primary tool for evaluating the biological condition of a water body and makes it possible to understand accumulative and long-term effect of stressors. They also provide reliable biological information for which disturbed systems are to be restored. Sustainable water environment is not enough with attaining only the clean water, but it should sustain healthy and diverse aquatic life. Aquatic organisms are affected by various factors, including not only water quality but also habitat condition and stressors, and thus good condition of both physical and chemical water quality is prerequisite for sustaining healthy organisms. Therefore, biological assessment, along with other physical and chemical assessments, are crucial for evaluating the health of a water body. Overall, sustainability of water environment demands the attainment and maintenance of ecological integrity, which is resulted from the combination of physical, chemical and biological integrity. The biological criteria will play very important role in the water resource management and policy issues, and thus bioassessment program should be fully implemented and supported eventually by the law. To keep ecosystem health of water environment safely from the toxic pollutants and other stressors, the following suggestions need to be considered in environmental quality standards in Korea. For the first step, the biological indicators need to be introduced in evaluating river quality condition; they provide a qualitative description of biological condition of water body. Secondly, the biological water quality standards using biotic indices should be developed and implemented under the consideration of characteristics of Korean river systems. Lastly, the ecological status classification regime (ESCR) should be developed and introduced; it could be used in quality assessment of the water environment in general. In developing ESCR, integration of physico-chemical, biological, and habitat parameters should be taken into account.

In this paper, convective heat transfer and flow characteristics of $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles suspended in water flowing through uniformly heated tubes are experimentally investigated under laminar flow regime. The heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop of nanoparticles suspended in water are experimentally presented according to the pumping power. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop of $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles suspended in water are compared with those of pure water under the fixed pumping power. It is shown that the heat transfer coefficient of $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids with 0.1% volume fraction is enhanced by about 12% although the increment of the pressure drop of those is 4% compared with those of pure water.
In this study, two hypotheses were examined to preliminarily verify for the vegetation recruitment and establishment on riparian bars in unregulated rivers; hydrologic regime change and nutrients influx into streams. In order to preliminarily verify the first hypothesis, precipitation patterns were analyzed during a period from March through to May when reeds, the most common riparian vegetation in Korea, germinate and start to grow in riparian areas. The results show that during the last 35 years, the total precipitation during the three-month period decreased by about 15 %, while the total annual one increased by about 15% in Korea. In order to verify the second hypothesis, a preliminary experiment was conducted with a set of two-vegetative flumes for one year. In this experiment, a stream flow with reeds on the riparian sand bars was simulated with a flume with reeds planted on the sand bed and water with a concentration of 3.5 mg of N flowing in the flume for four hours. For comparison, clean water was circulated in the same way in another flume for simulating a stream flow without N. The experimental results show that the growth rate of reeds in N-mixed flow exceeds that in clean water flow by about 30%. The above two results could explain the phenomenon of change in unregulated rivers from white river to green river in Korea, although they were obtained through limited extents of analysis and experiment.
A simple Couette flow velocity profile with an appropriate correlation for the free terminal rise velocity of a single bubble in a quiescent liquid can produce reliable results for the trajectories of small spherical air bubbles in a low-viscosity liquid (water) provided the liquid remains under uniform shear flow. Comparison of the model adopted in this paper with published results has been accomplished. Based on this study it has also been found that the lift coefficient in water is higher than its typical value in a high-viscosity liquid and therefore a modified correlation for the lift coefficient in a uniform shear flow of water within the regime of the $E\ddot{o}tv\ddot{o}s$ number $0.305{\leq}Eo{\leq}1.22$ is also presented.

The effect of inclination angle on natural convection heat transfer has been studied for water layers. The range of the Raleigh number was from the subcritical value to 1.4${\times}$10$^{7}$ , and the range of the inclination angle, $\theta$, measured from the horizontal was 0$\leq$$\theta$$\leq$180$^{\circ}$. For horizontal water layers, present results agreed well with the results of previous investigators and also showed significant departures from the results of air layers in the turbulent regime. Inclined cylindrical water layers showed secondary maxima in heat transfer, whereas rectangular air layers showed continuous decline of Nusselt number.

An Idea to estimate flexible criteria for river water use permits was proposed that takes the spatio-temporal flow variation along the river into account, which was applied to the Keumho River, one of the tributary of the Nakdong River in Korea. This idea implies the temporal division of four periods with different criteria, combining flood/non-flood seasons and irrigation/non-irrigation periods, while a single one has been applied throughout the year in the current practice. Through flow regime analysis of daily natural flow simulations at Dongchon and Seongseo, the control points of the study area, Q355 and 1Q10 for non-flood and non-irrigation period, Q275 for non-flood and irrigation period, Q185 for flood and irrigation period were suggested respectively. So, those values that subtract instream flow were determined as the flexible criteria in each season. From the comparison of current practice and the proposed method, it was estimated that $10.6\;million\;m^3/year$ is available for more water use permits without additional development of water storage. Therefore, it is conceived that flexible criteria for river water use permission suggested in this study can contribute to improve the national policies for more efficient water resources management in the future.
We analyzed the variations of water quality with flow regime alterations to determine the characteristics of the stream where the stream management is considerably difficult due to the high variability of the flow rates. In this study, both flow rates and water qualities were monitored at the tributaries, 34 in count, of both Geum River and Sabgyo Lake Basins. The variation of water qualities were divided into 2 types, based on their stream flow rates, known as Type I and Type II. If the water quality of a stream increases during low flow rate periods compared with high flow rate periods, it is classified as Type I; if the water quality of the stream increases during high flow rate periods compared with low flow rate periods, it falls under Type II. The analysis for the variations of water qualities, of all 43 basins, resulted to 24 basins under Type I and Nineteen 19 basins under Type II. The variations of water qualities were analyzed first by using Regression Analysis followed by Statistical Analysis. The average slope of the variations of water qualities and the slope of the standard deviations were 0.00135 and 0.00477, respectively. The Probability Distributions of both Type I and Type II basins were 61.1% and 38.9%, respectively. The basin having a probability distribution of 61.1% and is also known as Type I, increases during periods of low flow rates, due to the presence of point sources. Therefore, the basin should be enforced with stream management. Before the stream management can be implemented in all streams falling under Type II, the sources of contaminants should first be estimated. These contaminants can be classified into two parts, the first is Point source pollution and the second is Non-point source pollution, where the Non-Point source pollution can be sub-divided into two types, with storm runoff and without storm runoff.
Long term streamflow regime under virtual climate change scenario was examined. Rainfall forecast simulation of the Canadian Global Coupled Model (CGCM2) of the Canadian Climate Center for modeling and analysis for the IPCC SRES B2 scenario was used for analysis. The B2 scenario envisions slower population growth (10.4 billion by 2010) with a more rapidly evolving economy and more emphasis on environmental protection. The relatively large scale of GCM hinders the accurate computation of the important streamflow characteristics such as the peak flow rate and lag time, etc. The GCM rainfall with more than 100km scale was downscaled to 2km-scale using the space-time stochastic random cascade model. The HEC-HMS was used for distributed hydrologic model which can take the grid rainfall as input data. The result illustrates that the annual variation of the total runoff and the peak flow can be much greater than rainfall variation, which means actual impact of rainfall variation for the available water resources can be much greater than the extent of the rainfall variation.

We study the kinetics of absorption of water in Portland cement concretes added with 60, 70 and 80% of granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) cured in water and at open air and preheated at 50 and $100^{\circ}C$. A mathematical model is presented that allows describing the process not only in early ages where the capillary sorption is predominant but also for later and long times where the diffusive processes through the finer and gel pores are considered. The fitting of the model by computerized methods enables us to determine the parameters that characterize the process: i.e., the sorptivity coefficient (S) and diffusion coefficient (D). This allows the description of the process for all times and offers the possibility to know the contributions of both, the diffusive and capillary processes. The results show the influence of the curing regime and the preheating temperature on the behavior of GGBS mortars.

The patterns of occurrence of typhoons in North Pacific region are constantly changing with the increase of temperature in sea surface and the occurrence of El Nino and La Nina and changes of their development caused by global warming. In addition, alterations of flow regimes caused by large-scale hydraulic construction projects in the past few years and changes in precipitation patterns caused by climate change have imposed increased stress on hydroecology while the indiscreet utilization of water resources has a negative environmental impact on the water flows in the natural rivers and streams and hydroecological structures. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of altered hydrologic regime on stream and riparian ecosystems that are most vulnerable to climate variability and extremes such as typhoons.
