  • The SWMM (storm water management model) has been widely used in the world and is a watershed runoff simulation model used for a single event or a continuous simulation of runoff quantity and quality. However, there are many uncertain parameters in the watershed runoff continuous simulation module and the water quality module, which make it difficult to use the SWMM. The purpose of the study is to develop an automatic calibration module of the SWMM not only for watershed runoff continuous simulation, but also water quality simulation. The automatic calibration module was developed by linking the SWMM with the SCE-UA (shuffled complex evolution-University of Arizona) that is a global optimization algorithm. Estimation parameters of the SWMM were selected and search ranges of them were reasonably configured. The module was validated by calibration and verification of the watershed runoff continuous simulation model and the water quality model for the Donghyang Stage Station Basin. The calibration results for watershed runoff continuous simulation model were excellent and those for water quality simulation model were generally satisfactory. The module could be used in various studies and designs for watershed runoff and water quality analyses.

  • This study reports the serial use of a 3-D hydrodynamic model, EFDC-Hydro and a dynamic water quality model WASP7.2 that are maintained by USEPA. The 48 km section of the Geum River downstream between Daechung Dam and Gongju was selected as a sample study site. Topographical information was used to accurately represent morphology of the study site and boundary conditions were derived from governmental databases including WAMIS by Ministry of Land and Ocean and WEIS by Ministry of Environment. EFDC-Hydro was successfully calibrated for observed water level and WASP was calibrated using monthly observed water quality data obtained from the above sources. It was found that the current water quality target of BOD for the Geum River-H point could not be met on monthly basis though every other tributary of the area would meet its own water quality target as assigned in Korean TMDL. This study proposed the new target BOD water quality for the Gabcheon and Mihocheon as 4.3 and 3.6 mg/l, respectively so that the Geum River-H point can meet the target. When Sejong City is constructed, it is estimated that effluent discharge limit of BOD must be less than 4.5 mg/l to meet water quality of the point. This study shows that it is possible to carry out more precise modeling considering both water movement and water kinetics by using EFDC and WASP simultaneously.

  • The eco-hydrodynamic model was used to simulation water quality of Kwangyang Bay according to the environmental variation for appropriate water quality management. The mean concentration of COD was 3.3㎎/L, this exceeded the third class of water quality criteria. Waste water discharging loads showed approximately 90% of total pollutant loads. For satisfaction to below 10㎍/L of Chl. a and 2㎎/L of COD, above 35% reduction of present pollutant loads of point sources are needed.

  • Since construction of the estuarine barrage at the mouth of the Nakdong River, eutrophication and increased abundance of phytoplankton have occurred mainly due to the increased retention time in the reach. However, during the spring, there is a decrease in chlorophyll-a, as a result of an increase in zooplankton number, which preys upon phytoplankton and affects the value of chlorophyll-a. In order to emphasize the importance of zooplankton data in water quality simulation, zooplankton community data were used to simulate water quality and eutrophication at Mulgeum located in 27 km upstream from the barrage. WASP 7.2 was used as the water quality model for the river, using a monthly data set from 2003 to 2005 for model calibration and verification. The results showed that chlorophyll-a, DO, and total nitrogen in the river were simulated well during the verification period. The results of water quality simulation using zooplankton community data in the model were better than those with phytoplankton death rate, in terms of the absolute value of percent bias, root mean square error, and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency. Those results indicate the use of zooplankton data provides more accurate simulation results for chlorophyll-a and eutrophication.

  • This study area was Saemangeum Reservoir in Korea and the applied model was Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code(EFDC). It was the same as the scenarios to the boundary and initial conditions except the resolutions of the model grids. The resolutions were about 800 and 2,000 cells. It was considered scenario 1 and 2. The model was performed to simulate the water temperature, salinity, water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen(DO), chemical oxygen demand(COD), total nitrogen(T-N), and total phosphorus(T-P) at 2008. The simulation results of the two scenarios were reflected in the trend of observed data tolerably. However, water flow, water temperature, and salinity showed high confidence level at the scenario 1. The water quality items did not present high confidence level at the scenario 1 because which concept was considered to biochemical and physical processes. This result shows that grid resolution has an influence on the water transport and the effect is reflected directly shallow and narrow water area. But, the selection of grid resolution should be considered the purpose of model simulation and the process of target items.

  • The purpose of this study was development and application of a multiple box model for long term prediction and control of water quality in estuary reservoir. The model was composed of one main model and two sub models for hydrology and water quality. Water quality constituents for modeling were temperature, chlorophyll-a, BOD, DO, N, and P. The model had been applied to Asan reservoir, and the reservoir had been devided into three boxes-two boxes for a upper layer and one box for a lower layer-to represent stratification. The model appeared satisfactory in representing long term trend of water quality variations by comparing measured and simulated results. According to the application of the model to study alternatives for water quality improvement to deal with increase in future pollution load, use of non-phosphorous detergent for chlorophyll-a, advanced sewage treatment for BOD and T-N, reduction of livestock waste for T-P were evaluated as more effective ones than any others, respectively.

  • The current industrial development and the increase of population in Daecheong Reservoir basin have produced a rapid increase of wastewater discharge. This has resulted in problem of water quality control and management. Although many efforts have been carried out, reservoir water quality has not significantly improved. In this sense, the development of water quality management system is required to improve reservoir water quality. The goal of this study is to design a GIS-based water quality management system for the scientific water quality control and management in the Daecheong Reservoir. For general water quality analysis, WASP5 model was applied to the Daecheong Reservoir. A sensitivity analysis was made to determine significant parameters and an optimization was made to estimate optimal values. The calibration and verification were performed by using observed water quality data for Daecheong Reservoir. A water quality management system for Daecheong Reservoir was made by connecting the WASP5 model to ArcView. It allows a Windows-based Graphic User Interface(GUI) to implement all operation with regard to water quality analysis. The proposed water quality management system has capability for the on-line data process including water quality simulation, and has a post processor far the reasonable visualization for various output. The modeling system in this study will be an efficient NGIS(National Geographic Information System) far planning of reservoir water quality management.

  • In this study, the material cycle model was applied to suggest alternative management of water quality for Jeju Harbor. The distribution of COD, DIN (dissolved inorganic nitrogen) and DIP (dissolved inorganic phosphorus) concentrations was reasonably reproduced by simulations on the model area of the Jeju Harbor using a material cycle model. The simulations of COD, DIN and DIP concentrations were performed under the conditions of 20∼100% pollution loadings reductions from pollution sources. In case of the 100% reduction of the input loads from Sanzi river, concentrations of COD, DM and DIP were reduced to 39%, 78% and 52%, respectively at Jeju harbor. In contrast, in case of the pollutant loadings reductions from sediment, the effect of DIN and DIP reduction relatively seemed to increase around the center of study area. The 95% reduction of the pollutant loadings from river and sediment is required to meet the COD and nutrients concentration of second grade of ocean water quality criteria.

  • To overcome main drawbacks of parametric models, k-nearest neighbor resampling (KNNR) is suggested for water quality analysis involving geographic information. However, with KNNR nonparametric model, Geographic information is not properly handled. In the current study, to manipulate geographic information properly, we introduce a depth function which is a novel statistical concept in the classical KNNR model for stormwater quality simulation. An application is presented for a case study of the total suspended solids throughout the entire United States. Total suspended solids concentration data of stormwater demonstrated that the proposed model significantly improves the simulation performance rather than the existing KNNR model.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a Water Quality Management System(WQMS), which calculates pollutant discharge and forecasts water quality with a water pollution model. Operational water quality management requires not only controlling pollutants but acquiring and managing exact information. A GIS software, ArcView 3.1 was used to enter or edit geographic data and attribute data, and Avenue Script was used to customize the user interface. PCI, a remote sensing software, was used to derive land cover classification from 20 m resolution SPOT data by image processing. WQMS has two subsystems, database subsystem and modelling subsystem. The database subsystem consisted of watershed data from digital maps, remote sensing data, government reports, census data and so on. The modelling subsystem consisted of NSPLM(NonStorm Pollutant Load Model) and SPLM(Storm Pollutant Load Model). It calculates the amount of pollutant and predicts water quality. These two subsystems were connected through a graphic display module. This system has been calibrated for and applied to Mokhyun Stream watershed.
