Application of Water Quality Management System of Freshwater Lake

  • Lake water quality assessment information is useful to anyone involved in lake management, from lake owners to lake associations. It provides lake water quality criteria, which can improve the ways how to manage out lake resources and how to measure current conditions. It also provides a knowledge base so that the lakes can be protected and restored. Here, the Freshwater Lake Water Quality Management System(FLAQUM) was developed. The results of FLAQUM application by scenario proved that pollutant load at rainfall by the nonpoint sources was much more than normal times at rainfall. From the result of Scenario I (pollutant source increase case), the concentrations of Boryeong freshwater lake were BOD 9.43mg/L, T-N 4.53 mg/L and T-P 0.21 mg/L, respectively, and those values exceed the standard of agricultural water. And in case of Scenario I and II(the present case) excluding Scenario III (pollutant source decrease case), all of T-N and T-P are either mesotrophication or eutrophication, on the other hand when 60% of pollution source is removed, the concentrations of Scenario III were BOD 3.21 mg/L, T-N 0.95 mg/L, T-P 0.11 mg/L, respectively, and which satisfies the standard of agricultural water quality.

용담댐 저수지 수질관리시스템 적용성 평가 (Assessment of Water Quality Management System Application on Yongdam Reservoir)

  • To develop a watershed management plan for protection of the lake water quality, the linkages among land use activities, stream water quality, and lake water quality must be understood. This study conducted to develop a Decision Support System(DSS) for the reservoir water quality managers and a comprehensive watershed management plan. This DSS has three main components; database, interactive decision model, and data delivery interface system. Graphic User Interface(GUI) was developed as the interface medium to deliver the data and modeling results to the end users. Water quality management scenarios in Yongdam reservoir consist of two parts. One is the watershed management, and the other is water quality management in the reservoir. The watershed management scenarios that were evaluated include as follows : a removal of point sources, control of waste water treatment plant, reductions in nonpoint sources, and the management of developed land. Water quality management scenarios in the reservoir include to install a curtain wall and to operate an algae removal system. The results from the scenario analysis indicate that the strategy of the reservoir water quality management can promise the best effectiveness to conserve the quality of reservoir water. It is expected that many local agencies can use this DSS to analyze the impact of landuse changes and activities on the reservoir watershed and can benefit from making watershed management decisions.

호내 부유물질 거동 분석을 통한 도암댐 운영 방안에 관한 연구 (Study on the Management of Doam Dam Operation by the Analysis of Suspended Solids Behavior in the lake)

  • The Doam lake watershed was designated as a non-point pollution management area in 2007 to improve water quality based on watershed management implementation. There have been studies of non-point source reduction with respect to the watershed management impacting the pollutant transport of the reservoir. However, a little attention has been focused on the impact of water quality improvement by the management of the dam operation or the guidelines on the dam operation. In this study, the impact of in-lake management practices combined with watershed management is analyzed, and the appropriate guidelines on the operation of the dam are suggested. The integrated modeling system by coupling with the watershed model (HSPF) and reservoir water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2) was applied for analyzing the impact of water quality management practices. A scenario implemented with sedimentation basin and suspended matter barrier showed decrease in SS concentration up to 4.6%. The SS concentration increased in the scenarios adjusting withdrawal location from EL.673 m to the upper direction(EL.683 m and EL.688 m). The water quality was comparably high when the scenario implemented all in-lake practices with water intake at EL.673 m. However, there was improvement in water quality when the height of the water intake was moved to EL.688 m during the summer by preventing sediments inflow after the rainfall. Therefore, to manage water quality of the Doam lake, it is essential to control the water quality by modulating the height of water intake through consistent turbidity monitoring during rainfall.

QUAL2Kw 모형을 이용한 자동보정 방법 비교분석과 섬강의 수질관리 대안 평가 (Comparative analysis of auto-calibration methods using QUAL2Kw and assessment on the water quality management alternatives for Sum River)

  • 본 연구에서는 GA와 QUAL2K를 통합한 QUAL2Kw 모형을 이용해서 수질모형 매개변수의 자동 보정 방법을 비교 분석하였다. 발전 속도가 빠른 원주시의 배출 오염부하의 영향을 크게 받는 섬강에 QUAL2Kw 모형을 적용하였고, 전 구간 단일 매개변수를 적용하는 방법과 구간별 매개변수를 적용하는 두가지 방법으로 자동보정 방법을 비교 분석하였다. CV(RMSE)의 오차와 GA의 적합도 분석결과 구간별 매개변수 방법이 단일 매개변수 방법보다 정밀도가 다소 높은 것으로 나타났으므로 본 연구에서는 구간별 매개변수 방법으로 계산한 자동보정 결과를 채택하였다. 검보정된 QUAL2Kw 모형을 섬강 수질관리를 위한 세가지 시나리오에 대해 적용해서 수질 개선 효과를 분석하였다. 원주하수처리장 방류수질을 개선하는 시나리오 1에서는 중권역 대표지점인 섬강 4-1지점의 BOD와 TP 농도가 각각 17.7%, 29.1% 감소되었고, 원주천 유입직후 섬강에서는 BOD와 TP 농도가 각각 50.4%, 40.5% 감소하여 섬강 수질 개선효과가 크다. 원주취수장을 폐쇄하고 섬강 이외의 수계에서 원주 일대에 광역상수도를 공급하는 시나리오 2에서는 섬강 중하류부의 유량이 증가함에 따라 섬강 본류의 수질이 소폭 개선된다. 원주천 합류 직후 섬강에서 BOD가 0.18mg/L, TP가 0.0063mg/L 감소하였다. 시나리오 3에서는 시나리오 1과 시나리오 2의 대안을 동시에 계획하는 것으로서 시나리오 1보다 섬강 수질이 소폭 더 개선된다. 시나리오별 수질 예측결과 원주하수처리장의 방류수질을 개선하는 것이 섬강 수질개선에 가장 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 특히 원주천 합류직후 섬강 수질이 크게 개선된다. 원주취수장을 폐쇄하고 타 수계에서 광역상수도를 통해 원주 지역에 상수도를 공급하는 방안도 섬강 수질을 소폭 개선할 수 있다.

격자 해상도에 따른 EFDC의 새만금호 모의 (The Comparison of Grid Resolutions using EFDC in Saemangeum Reservoir)

  • This study area was Saemangeum Reservoir in Korea and the applied model was Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code(EFDC). It was the same as the scenarios to the boundary and initial conditions except the resolutions of the model grids. The resolutions were about 800 and 2,000 cells. It was considered scenario 1 and 2. The model was performed to simulate the water temperature, salinity, water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen(DO), chemical oxygen demand(COD), total nitrogen(T-N), and total phosphorus(T-P) at 2008. The simulation results of the two scenarios were reflected in the trend of observed data tolerably. However, water flow, water temperature, and salinity showed high confidence level at the scenario 1. The water quality items did not present high confidence level at the scenario 1 because which concept was considered to biochemical and physical processes. This result shows that grid resolution has an influence on the water transport and the effect is reflected directly shallow and narrow water area. But, the selection of grid resolution should be considered the purpose of model simulation and the process of target items.

상류 유역의 오염부하량 삭감에 따른 평택호 수질관리 보존 대책 연구 (Study on water quality management of lake Pyeungtaek for the reduction of pollutant loadings in upstream watersheds)

  • 평택호의 수질개선 대책을 수립하기 위하여 호수 내 수질조사를 2회 수행하였으며, 상류 유역의 부하량 삭감에 따른 호소 내 수질개선 효과를 파악하기 위하여 WASP/EUTRO5 모형을 사용하여 시뮬레이션 하였다. 현재의 부하량이 장래에도 지속이 되는 경우에는 호소 내 수질이 상류 유역의 개발에 따른 오염부하량의 증가로 수질이 더욱 더 악화되는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 본 연구에서는 다양한 부하량 삭감 대책을 수립하여 장래의 수질을 예측하였으며, 대안 6가 다른 대안에 비하여 호소의 수질농도를 낮추는 데 크게 기여하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나, 대안 6의 경우에도 2016년에 호소 내 COD 농도가 9.74 mg/L로 호소수질환경기준 약간 나쁨(4등급, COD 8 mg/L 이하)에도 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났으며, 2021년에도 유사한 경향을 나타내었다. 대안 6에 부하량을 추가로 삭감하여도 호소의 수질개선 효과는 미미하며 경제적인 측면에서도 적합하지 않은 것으로 나타났다.

BASINS/HSPF 모델을 이용한 화성호 수질보전을 위한 상류 유역 수질개선방안 연구 (Watershed Management Measures for Water Quality Conservation of the Hwaseong Reservoir using BASINS/HSPF Model)

  • HSPF model based on BASINS was applied to analyze effects of watershed management measures for water quality conservation in the Hwaseong Reservoir watershed. The model was calibrated against the field measurements of meteorological data, streamflow and water qualities ($BOD_5$, T-N, T-P) at each observatory for 4 years (2007-2010). The water quality characteristics of inflow streams were evaluated. The 4 scenarios for the water quality improvement were applied to inflow streams and critical area from water pollution based on previous researches. The reduction efficiency of point and non-point sources in inflow streams was evaluated with each scenario. The results demonstrate that the expansion of advanced treatment system within wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and construction of pond-wetlands would be great effective management measures. In order to satisfactory the target water quality of reservoir, the measures which can control both point source and non-point source pollutants should be implemented in the watershed.

  • A lot of research on the application of GIS has been conducted in the field of water quality management. The function of a geometric data acquisition for reservoir and river models, however, is not enough to satisfy multiuser' convenience. CE-QUAL-W2 is a two-dimensional(2D) longitudinal/vertical hydrodynamic and water quality model for surface water bodies, modeling eutrophication processes such as temperature-nutrient-algae and sediment relationships. The purpose of this study is to analyzing which bathymetry information affects hydraulic results. There are consisted of three scenarios under consideration. The first scenario takes into account only tribatary type data such as Heoin and Okchen river. The second scenario, Heoin river constructs to tributary and Okchen river constructs by branch. Last scenario constructs Heoin and Okchen river by branch. The RMSE error results for the first, second and third scenarios are 0.61, 0.36 and 0.28 respectively.

개별배출시설 삭감잠재량 분석을 통한 수질오염총량제의 민간참여 활성화 방안 연구 (A Study on the Activation of Non-government Participation in Total Maximum Daily Load System using Private Discharge Facilities Reduction Potential Analysis)

  • Four major river basin in Korea has been managed with Total Maximum Daily Load(TMDL) System. Water quality indicators as targeted pollutants for TMDL were BOD and TP. In order to satisfy water quality criteria, government allocation using public treatment facilities and its action plan has been used. However, the role to improve water quality were recently faced to its limitation. It is time to require the role of non-government allocation in private discharge facilities to control good water quality. This study investigated three different scenarios in reduction demands of non-government allocations about industry and private sewages. The three different scenarios were discharge under 1) legal water quality standard, 2) water quality level in 2011 and 3) current water quality level with maximum value in group. The results showed that reduction potential in water discharge for TP indicator was 1,118kg/day, under second scenario with 20% of deduction. This results arrived at 42% of whole reduction potential costs and 0.012mg/L improvement in water quality. In conclusion, to intrigue voluntary participation in non-government allocation, various benefits such as tax reduction, tax exemption, and water quality trading should be provided.

최적화 모델을 이용한 경제적인 총량관리 할당기법 연구 (The Allocation Methods for Economical Efficiency Using an Optimized Model)

  • In Korea, Total Maximum Daily Loads(TMDLs) has been enforced to restore and manage water quality in the watersheds. However, some assesment of implementation plan of TMDLs showed that the achievement of the target water quality is not related to the proper allocation loads because difference of flow duration interval. In the United States, the discharge loads are determined by water quality modeling considering standard flow conditions according to purpose. Therefore, this study tried to develop the allocation method considering economical efficiency using water quality model. For this purpose, several allocation methods being used in the management of TMDLs is investigated and develope an allocation criteria considering regional equality and uniformity. Since WARMF(Watershed Analysis Risk Management Framework) model can simulate the time varying behavior of a system and the various water quality variables, it was selected for a decision support system in this study. This model showed fairly good performance by adequately simulating observed discharge and water quality in Miho watershed. Furthermore, the scenario simulation results showed that the effect of annual average water quality improvement to remove 1kg BOD is more than 25 times, even if point pollutants treatment facility is six times more expensive to operate than non-point pollutants treatment facility.
