This experiment was performed to investigate the characteristics of corrosion mechanism of water steel pipes using SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) from March 1. 2002 to November 30. The characteristics shown in these results can be summarized as the following: 1. When I investigated to the characteristics of iron pipes and zinc pipes using a SEM, I could be found that there was a distintion in interface between an iron pipe and the scale, and that a zinc pipe wears a dark color. 2. I find much rate of $Fe_2O_3$ and a little rate of FeS as corrosion products, but I hardly find $FeCO_3$without carbon. 3 It was found that the oxide corrosion rate was 0.2~0.3mm/year. And then A-1 was 0.323mm/year that was very high.

Service life of water pipes buried in the underground is considerably affected from various factors such as environmental characteristics, pipe characteristics, operation and maintenance, etc. Therefore it is difficult to determine their service life as uniformly the same value assigned by related laws and ordinances. As a result, the service life should be determined by the technical judgement based on the assessment for the condition of water pipes. In this study, It was established that the methodology could predict present and future failure risk, and plan short and long-term strategies for replacement/rehabilitation through the assessment for the physical deterioration and economical values of buried water pipe. The methodology was applied for the verification and reliability to several sites selected in multi-regional transmission pipelines. The proposed method could helps to support reasonable and economical decision of rehabilitation/replacement in the present and future. To improve conventional assessment method of aged water pipes, affecting factors are simplified based on the statistical analysis results from the measured data in the field and the physical deterioration mechanism for better reliability. Also, the guide-line is developed to carry out the reasonal rehabilitation planning through water pipe condition assessment.
This paper studies on the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) pipes used in basic sanitation in the conduction of storm water and sanitary sewer. Pipes with 800 mm and 1200 mm in diameter were analyzed. The 800 mm pipes were built with simple reinforcement and the 1200 mm pipes with double reinforcement. For the two diameters of pipes the presence or absence of the pocket was evaluated, and the denomination of each one is spigot and pocket pipe (SPP) and ogee joint pipe (OJP), respectively. The 3D numerical models reproduce the three-edge-bearing test that provides information about the strength and stiffness of the reinforced concrete pipes. The validation of the computational models was carried out comparing the vertical and horizontal displacements on the springline and crown/invert and it was also evaluated the reinforcement strains and the crack pattern. As a main conclusion, the numerical models represented satisfactorily the behavior of the pipes and can be used in future studies in parametric analysis.
Various pipes are buried in the city as needed, such as water pipes, gas pipes and hydrogen pipes. As the time passes, buried pipes becomes aged due to crack, etc. these pipes has the risk of accidents such as explosion and leakage. To prevent the risks, many pipes are repaired or replaced, but the location of the pipes can also be changed. Failure to identify the location of the altered pipe may cause an accident by touching the pipe. In this paper, we propose a method to detect buried pipes by gathering the GPR images by using GPR and Learning with Faster R-CNN. Then experiments was carried out by raw data sets and data sets augmentation applied to increase the amount of images.

Leak noise is a good source to identify the exact location of a leak point of underground water pipelines. Water leak generates broadband noise from a leak location and can be propagated to both directions of water pipes. This sound propagation due to leak in water pipelines is not a non-dispersive wave any more because of the surrounding pipes and soil. However, the necessity of long-range detection of this leak location makes to identify low-frequency acoustic waves rather than high frequency ones. Acoustic wave propagation coupled with surrounding boundaries including cast iron pipes is theoretically analyzed and the wave velocity was confirmed with experiment. The leak locations were identified both by the acoustic emission (AE) method and the cross-correlation method. In a short-range distance, both the AE method and cross-correlation method are effective to detect leak position. However, the detection for a long-range distance required a lower frequency range accelerometers only because higher frequency waves were attenuated very quickly with the increase of propagation paths. Two algorithms for the cross-correlation function were suggested, and a long-range detection has been achieved at real underground water pipelines longer than 300m.
Along with the development of the industrial society, as the transportation of water which is the indirect capital of society and petroleum, gas, etc used as energy sources is rapidly increased. the underground material is being expanded. Like this, the pipes laid under the ground not only bring the corrosion to the land circumstances to reduce the life of the pipes, but also raise the social problem of leakage accidents and the economic loss by Pin Hole. By reason of this, for the purpose of protecting the corrosion of the underground material, we are constructing and operating the electrolytic protection facilities. In case of a region of which specific resistance is high, however, we are not keeping proper protection potential(that is -850mV) to get protection effects. In this study, for the water pipes that under-voltage phenomena occur in the protection potential, we made a spot survey on the under-voltage section and normal-voltage section, compared, analyzed each of the contents and examined the under-voltage causes of the protection potential.

Recently, underground pipes are utilized in various fields of applications such as sewer lines, drain lines, water mains, gas lines, telephone and electrical conduits, culverts, oil lines, etc. Most of pipes are installed for long-term purposes and they should be safely installed in consideration of installation conditions because there are unexpected various terrestrial loading conditions. In this paper, we present the result of investigation pertaining to the structural behavior of glass fiber reinforced thermosetting polymer plastic (GFRP) flexible pipes buried underground. The mechanical properties of the GFRP flexible pipes produced in the domestic manufacturer are determined and the results are reported in this paper. In addition, ring deflection is measured by the field tests and the finite element analysis (FEA) is also conducted to simulate the structural behavior of GFRP pipes buried underground. From the field test results, we predicted long-term, up to 50 years, ring deflection of GFRP pipes buried underground based on the method suggested by the existing literature. It was found that the GFRP flexible pipe to be used for cooling water intake system in the nuclear power plant is appropriate because 5% ring deflection limitation for 50 years could be satisfied.
Although it produces well-treated water in water treatment plant, water quality at the tap can be changed depending on the state of pipes. It is because water quality deteriorates as plant water passes through pipeline networks. Therefore, the improvement of not only water treatment technology but also O & M of water pipelines is required to supply good water to consumers. The purpose of the study was to obtain the basic data of control technology for water quality in pipes through investigating water quality in distribution system. We selected 11 sampling sites and investigated water quality from plant to endpoint of distribution system. we also simulated decreasing tendency of free chlorine through pipeline network. As the result of water quality test, all parameters were below allowable levels, but some parameters had the possibility of being over levels. So there must be more work to set up proper countermeasure for violable parameters.
Most of existing buried pipes are composed of reinforced concrete. Reinforced concrete pipes have many problems such as aging, corrosion, leaking, etc. The polyethylene (PE) pipes have advantages to solve these problems. The plastic pipes buried underground are classified into a flexible pipe. National standard that has limited the long-term vertical deformation of the pipe to 5% for flexible pipes including PE pipe. This study presents a prediction for the long-term behavior of the polyethylene pipe based on ASTM D 5365. This prediction method is presented to estimate by using the statistical method from the initial deflection measurement data. We predict the behavior of long-term performance on the double-wall pipe and multi-wall pipe. As a result, it was found that the PE pipe will be sound enough more than 50 years if the compaction of soil around the pipe is more than 95% of the standard soil compaction density.

In this study, the thermal and fluid dynamic characteristics for the coating process of large-sized water pipes was studied by heating the inside of a pipe directly with a gas burner. Heat and flow analyses were performed on large pipes with various inlet shapes. Using large pipes for coating was shown to be the proper shape for heating large pipes uniformly. This type has a screw with a diameter of 200 mm installed at the inlet to provide a rotational motion to the heating air. The rotational motion resulted in a uniform temperature distribution that ranged from $289.1^{\circ}C$ to $352.1^{\circ}C$ The optimized geometric configuration of the inlet of the pipe successfully and uniformly enhanced the thermal characteristics of the devised temperature limit.
