The current conditions of large water mains are evaluated by deteriorations and the causes of deterioration are investigated through visual assessments in the field, mechanical tests and analysis of chemical compositions in laboratory for each pipe material, unlined cast iron pipes (CIPs), ductile iron pipes (DCIPs) and steel pipes (SPs) Tubercles and scales from internal and external corrosion of unlined cast iron pipes were identified as the causes of functional performance limitations in large water mains. It is investigated that main causes of internal and external corrosion of water pipes are from lots of depositions of organic and inorganic substances on pipe surface, concentrated pitting, and uniform corrosion by local or global exfoliation or detachment of lining and coatings of DCIPs and SPs. Internal and external corrosion depths of CIPs were higher than those of DCIPs and SPs. Consequently, total corrosion rate summed internal and external corrosion rates of CIPs also were shown to be higher than those of DCIPs and SPs. The failure time from hole generation of CIPs by total corrosion rate was predicted to be taken sixteen years, and DCIPs and SPs were twenty-six years and one hundred and fifty three years. And longitudinal deflection of investigated water mains were not happened and mechanical strengths such as tensile strength, elongation, and hardness also were mostly suited to Korea Standards. It was thought that the weakness of tensile strength of one sample(S-11) was, however, due to higher carbon contents(%) in CIPs. Pipe deterioration score of S-46 was 55.2 and was preferentially assessed to be rehabilitated.
Explicit equations of minimum velocity, energy slope and pipe diameter are developed to ensure the cleaning of sewerage pipes. The equations of power form are employed for the estimation of critical shear stress of sediment particles and the friction factor of commercial pipes. They are all based on the existing laboratory data. Several cases are tested to check the values suggested in the manual, using the equations developed in the present study.

High temperature and high pressure heavy water flows through the pipes in atomic power plants. The curved parts of pipes are critical parts in that they change the direction of steam flow, and these parts are especially affected by severe wear. Therefore, most pipes in atomic power plants are tested by non-destructive examination by workers who use ultrasonic sensors to measure the wall thickness of pipes. But not only are these pipes located in a very dangerous environment, but the space is also very limited. For the safety of workers, it is necessary to design a device that uses a mobile robot that can inspect curved pipes. This paper presents the design and construction of a small device that can generate the necessary contact forces between ultrasonic sensors and pipe walls in a limited space. And a mobile robot is used in place ortho worker for successful non-destructive examination.
The pipes using in water-based fire protection systems are used steel pipes for ordinary piping, carbon steel pipes for pressure service, copper and copper alloy seamless pipes and tubes, etc. By last buildings of high-rising, complexity, in fire protection systems, the corrosion resistance, easy construction, lightweight and cost-effective use of the pipes is being considered. Among the pipes, the possibility of used for fire protection system being used in the existing copper pipe of material properties, strength, corrosion resistance, heat resistance through and compare the performance was evaluated. As a result of that assessment light gauge stainless steel pipes for ordinary piping (KS D 3595) at a water pressure of less than 1.2 MPa can be used in sufficient physical properties, strength, corrosion resistance, heat resistance and have been observed.
In this study, the RDII impact on sewer designing in the upstream monitoring area (A site) was considered. Based on the long-term (1/1/2011~12/31/2011) rainfall and flow data consisting of 10-min interval sampling in the nearby design area (B site), the maximum RDII/DWF ratio was selected. The sewer network system at B site was evaluated by the Manning equation. Scenario 1 considering the hourly maximum flow with respect to the flow velocity showed that none of the sewer pipes satisfied the minimum flow velocity condition (0.6 m/s), and 40 pipes did not achieve half of the velocity condition. In scenario 2 considering I/I, 1 the pipes satisfied 0.6 m/s, and 35 pipes showed 0.3 m/s. Scenario 3 reflected the effect of RDII. Velocities in 26 pipes were less than 0.3 m/s, and 4 pipes satisfied the velocity condition. With respect to the allowance rate, 17 pipes were shown to have more than 99%, and none of the pipes satisfied less than 95% of the allowance rate in scenario 1. In scenario 2, 17 Ed: Per the Table pipes showed more than 99% and one pipe showed less than 95%. In scenario 3, 16 pipes showed more than 99% of the allowance rate, and 19 pipes showed less than 95%. Based on these results, it is predicted that deposition would occur due to the slow flow velocity; however, capacity would not be a problem.
A study of the possible axisymmetric modes that propagate at low frequencies in buried, water-filled iron pipes is presented. It is well known that for a vacuum-pipe-vacuum system the sole non-torsional axisymmetric mode that exists at low frequencies is the fundamental L(0,1) mode. When a pipe is filled with water and still surrounded by a vacuum it is also known that another mode then appears which at low frequencies is characterized by predominantly axial water-borne displacements. In addition to these modes, this paper explores two other, less well known axisymmetric modes whose existence depends on the acoustic properties of the outer medium that surrounds a pipe. In this paper the predicted characteristics of these modes are presented.
Corrosion inhibitors including calcium hydroxide have been used to prevent corrosion in the pipes for tap water supply. The corrosion index (i.e., Langelier Index) differs by area and water quality. The corrosion indices of the areas studied differed by more than 2.0. The 'homogenized' calcium hydroxide was added to the treated water at the K water treatment plant, in order to increase the value of the corrosion index and the concentration of calcium. As the result, the concentration of calcium was increased while the turbidity and pH changed little. The corrosion rate of the tap water with the 'homogenized' calcium hydroxide could be slowed down pretty much. The results suggested that the technology of 'homogenization' of calcium hydroxide can applied to tap water and desalinated water to prevent corrosion in water pipes even in corrosive pipes.

For more efficient use of the high pressure water-jet in rehabilitation of the water pipes, we have studied the water-jet cleaning motion of the in-pipe robot with screw drive. The mathematical models of the water-jet in the straight and the curved pipe (90 degrees elbow), representative features of the water mains, were designed to understand the water-jet motion and simulations have been performed. Furthermore the experiments has been conducted to validate the simulations by using the prototype in-pipe robot in the 3-D pipeline. The simulation results show that the water-jet motion in the straight pipe has a constant water-jet interval, whereas the motion in the curved pipe is changed by its position. By the comparison of the simulation and the experimental results, we have demonstrated that the simulations successfully estimate the water-jet motion inside the water pipes. Therefore in-pipe robot operators can predict a water-jet motion for a target water pipe through the simulation and flexibly make a proper water-jet motion by changing the robot configurations before a cleaning work.
In this study, variable characteristics of drinking water and the influences on underground water reservoirs, rooftop water tanks, and service water pipes in the building were assessed. The influence of underground water reservoir material and water capacity on water quality also were assessed. The results are the following as; First of all, the drinking water passing through underground water reservoirs or service water pipes in the building, averagely metal component concentration more increased from percent of 41.3 to percent of 74.2 totally than other items of water quality. On the other hand, both residual chlorine and total solid highly decreased 65.6 percent and 35.3 percent, respectively. Therefore, it was thought that water quality could be getting worse for microorganism re-growth by residual chlorine reduction, and total solid also could be a cause for extraneous matters accumulated in water reservoir. Secondly, the variations on water quality of each stage for water supply system in the building were higher in water service pipes connected from rooftop water tanks to the tap than in underground water reservoirs. In addition to, among of twelve items on water quality, ten items on water quality except dissolved oxygen and residual chlorine increased. Therefore, it was thought that the influence of water service pipes connected from rooftop water tanks to the tap on water quality were higher than other stages of water supply system in the building. Thirdly, in case of materials of underground water reservoir, it was likely that the variation on water quality by stainless steel and concrete materials got some similar. In case of water capacity, the variations on water quality of underground water reservoirs over $1,000m^3$ higher than those under $1,000m^3$. That reasons was likely that the retention time(49.72 hours averagely) of underground water reservoirs over $1,000m^3$ was two times longer than it of those under $1,000m^3$(23.37 hours). Therefore, it was thought that the influence on water quality by materials were some similar, but in case of water capacity, the influence of underground water reservoirs were higher.
Well planned rehabilitation order of pipes is essential for efficient maintenance and management of Water Distribution Systems. In this study, not only deterioration rate of pipes but also structural and nonstructural failure which causes abnormal condition of WDS is considered to determine rehabilitation order. Probabilistic Neural Network is used for calculating deterioration rate at present and the importance of pipes is computed under structural and nonstructural failure by using Pipe by Pipe Failure Analysis and Effect Index. Utopian Approach, one of the Multi-Criteria Decision Making methods, is used for assessment of final rehabilitation order based on distance measure between utopian point and alternative one. Developed model in this study shows that it gives more reliable results than existing methods considering hydraulic relative importance does in application to real networks. In this point, the newly developed model, which gives advantages over existing models, can make a credible decision and simple application.
