Flaw visualization and velocity field measurement methods have practical applications in the various fluid engineering fields, such as mechanics, ships, and heat fluids. In this study, the basic principles and theoretical methods are used to establish an application technique of Particle Imae Velocimetry(abbreviated to PIV below). Accordingly, the measured results of velocity field distribution of a section inside the Circulating Water Channel (abbreviated to CWC below) are computed using the PIV is presented. The uniformity of velocity distribution of the section in CWC is confirmed, by comparing this PIV data with the existing current meter data. Also, in order to measure the flaw fields of surroundings of 2-dimensional cylinder in the CWC, the flaw visualization technique using the PIV is applied.
Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) is an extension of particle image velocimetry (PIV) for measurement of flows spanning large areas in laboratory or field conditions. LSPIV is composed of six elements - seeding, illumination, recording, image transformation, image processing, postprocessing - based on PIV. Possible error elements at each step of Mobile LSPIV (MLSPIV), which is a mobile version of LSPIV, in field applications are identified and summarized the effect of the errors which were quantified in the previous studies. The total number of elemental errors is 27, and five error sources were evaluated previously, seven elemental errors are not effective to the current MLSPIV system. Among 15 elemental errors, four errors - sampling time, image resolution, tracer, and wind - are investigated through an experiment at a laboratory to figure out how those errors affect to velocity calculation. The analysis to figure out the effect of the number of images used for image processing on the velocity calculation error shows that if over 50 images or more are used, the error due to it goes below 1 %. The effect of the image resolution on velocity calculation was investigated through various image resolution using digital camera. Low resolution image set made 3 % of velocity calculation error comparing with high resolution image set as a reference. For the effect of tracers and wind, the wind effect on tracer is decreasing remarkably with increasing the flume bulk velocity. To minimize the velocity evaluation error due to wind, tracers with high specific gravity is favorable.
Open-water sediment disposal has many applications in costal construction. Dumping of sediment in open water can be divided into descending stage under water and sedimentation stage on the seabed, and retained rate is evaluated from analyzed results of these two successive stages. Descending particle cloud have two distinct thermal and swam phase, and trajectory equations for each phase are derived to describe settling velocity and radius of particle cloud. For sedimentation stage, a numerical simulator is used to calculate growth factors for particle fiction angle and current velocity. Retained rate is defined as a mass rate of remained sediment inside the circle which has a center at dumping point on the sea level and user-defined effective radius. Retained rate map for Singapore coast is presented with water depth of 20 m, current velocity of 0.0~1.5 m/s, and effective radius of 5 m. It will decrease sediment mass loss during disposal operation and minimize surrounding environmental pollution.
Objectives of this study were to investigate influencing factors of detention time, particle size distribution, and filter medium characteristics for waterworks sludge dewatering. The stepped pressure filtration was carried out with lab scale apparatus and the filter press pilot test for dewatering was conducted at the water treatment plant. Effects of filter medium and polymer dose were examined through observing water content and dewatering velocity and cyclic dewatering rate with filter press pilot test. Relationships among detention time, particle size distribution and filtration resistance were analyzed. Prolongation of sludge detention time was found to cause blinding phenomenon in cake and filter medium and to decrease dewatering process efficiency. The average specific resistance increased according to detention time. In pilot test of dewatering for thickened sludge with Nylon Multi-NY840D and Nylon Mono-100% filter media, dewatering velocities were 0.92 and $0.93kg\;DS/m^2{\cdot}hr$ according to 0.1% polymer dose of dried solids weight base. And cyclic dewatering rates were 2.45 and $2.50kg\;DS/m^2{\cdot}cycle$ cycle for the Nylon Multi-NY840D and Nylon Mono-100% media. Dewatering velocity of polymer dosed sludge was observed to be higher than that of non-polymer sludge.

The current study reviews the formula used to calculate the stability of an artificial reef in the breaking wave zone of coastal waters. A comparison was carried out between the existing formula and a new formula that takes into account the water particle velocity in the breaking wave zone. Water particle velocity was analyzed using the Fluent (CADMAS-SURF) software program. The new formula took into various factors, including the difference in the drag coefficient due to the direction of the current and the ratio of distance between two reefs. The drag coefficient of the artificial reef due to the direction of the current was 0.84 when the distance ratio was 0.5. When the artificial reef was placed at 45 degree angle to the current, the product of the drag coefficient and the project area were 40 to 46 % greater than when the reef was placed at 90 degree angle. Our results regarding the stability of an artificial reef indicate that the new formula provides the designers of artificial reefs with a more rational and economic design rationale rather than the existing formula.
Particle breakthrough can occur by either the breakoff of previously captured particles (or flocs) or the direct passage of some influent particles through the filter. Filtration experiments were performed in a laboratory-scale filter using spherical glass beads with a diameter of 0.55 mm as collectors. A single type of particle suspension (Min-U-Sil 5, nearly pure $SiO_2$) and three different destabilization methods (pH control, alum and polymer destabilization) were utilized. The operating conditions were similar to those of standard media filtration practice: a filtration velocity of 5 m/h. To assess the possibility of particle detachment during the normal filtration, a hydraulic shock load (20% increase of flow rate) was applied after 4 hours of normal filtration. The magnitude of particle detachment was proportional to the particle size for non-Brownian particles. At the same time, less favorable particles, i.e., particles with larger surface charge, were easily detached during the hydraulic shock load. Therefore, proper particle destabilization before filtration is crucial for maximum particle removal as well as minimum particle breakthrough.
Three-dimensional (3D) velocity field information of a laminar flow in a curved micro tube of circular cross-section has been measured using a digital micro holographic particle tracking velocimetry (HPTV). The temporal evolution of instantaneous velocity field of a water flow in a curved micro tube of $100\;{\mu}\;m$ and $300\;{\mu}\;m$ in inner diameter was obtained. The 3D mean velocity field distribution was obtained quantitatively by statistical-averaging of instantaneous velocity fields. At low Dean number (De), a secondary flow was not generated in the curved tube. With increasing Dean number, the secondary flow constituted of two large-scale counter-rotating vortices was formed due to enhanced centrifugal force. To reveal the flow characteristics of high Dean numbers, trajectories of fluid particles were evaluated experimentally from the 3D velocity fields data measured by the HPTV technique. The present experimental results, especially the 3D particle trajectories, would be helpful to design and to understand the mixing phenomena in 3D curved passages of various curved micro-tubes or micro-channels.
Over the past decades, a flocculation and/or sedimentation process have been adopted to remove pollutants from CSOs. It has been learned that major factors affecting settlement of pollutants are the particle size distribution, their settling velocities and their specific gravity. It is, therefore, a good idea to analyze the particle size distribution and settleability of CSOs pollutants in order to develop details in designing a process. Discussed in this study are pollutant characteristics of CSOs such as particle size distribution and settleability of pollutants. The power law function is applied and is found to be an effective and reliable index for expressing the particle size distribution of pollutants in CSOs. Based on the regression analysis it is observed that the derived constants of curves representing settling velocity profile are proportional to the initial concentration of particles and to the ${\beta}$-values of power law distributions.

Suspended fine mineral particles are deposited at the areas with low flow velocity and low transportation capacity in rivers, reservoirs and lakes. It can be contaminated by heavy metals. Examples of problem fields art dredging of sediment, water pollutants, and maintenance of navigation channels and construction works. To deal with the settling problems it is necessary to understand tile physico-chemical characteristics of cohesive sediment under varying density of particle and ion addition(NaOH, HCl, NaCl), which is dissolved in river, because fine-grained cohesive sediment can lead to flocculation with the physico-chemical influences and takes different characteristics. Experiments with fresh and saline water are followed with fine-grained sediments(alumina and quartz) in settling columns. Settling velocity of suspended fine particles in still water was measured with a pressure sensor(maximum 10 mbar). Until the initial concentration of 20,000 mg/1 of alumina and quartz the settling velocity was on the increase. Above this initial concentration was it on the decrease. In an acid condition, which causes strong flocculation, average settling velocity of quartz powder was high. In an alkaline water low average settling velocity of it was observed. However, alumina behaved exactly contrarily.
Injection of microbubbles within the turbulent boundary layer has been investigated for several years as a method to achieve drag reduction. However, the physical mechanism of this phenomenon is not yet fully understood. Experiments in a channel flow for single phase (water) and two phase (water and microbubbles) flows with various void fraction values are studied for a Reynolds number of 5128 based on the half height of the channel and bulk velocity. The state-of-the art Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) measurement technique is used to measure the instantaneous full-field velocity components. Comparisons between turbulent statistical quantities with various values of local void fraction are presented to elucidate the influence of the microbubbles presence within the boundary layer. A decrease in the Reynolds stress distribution and turbulence production is obtained with the increase of microbubble concentration. The results obtained indicate a decorrelation of the streamwise and normal fluctuating velocities when microbubbles are injected within the boundary layer.
