  • This study was to investigate the effects of water induction through the air intake system on the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions in an IDI diesel engine. The fuel injection timing was also controlled to investigate a method for the simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx when water was injected into the combustion chamber. The formation of NOx was significantly suppressed by decreasing the gas peak temperature during the initial combustion process because the water played a role as a heat sink during evaporating in the combustion chamber, while the smoke was slightly increased with increased water amount. Also, NOx emission was significantly decreased with increase in water amount. A simultaneous reduction in smoke and NOx emissions was obtained when water was injected into the combustion chamber by retarding more 2$^{\circ}C$A of the fuel injection timing than without water injection.

  • The water containing soluble manganese may cause problems such as discolored water, unpleasant taste, fouling or scaling of pipes in water distribution system, and so on. Conventional water treatment processes using sand filtration or sedimentation after oxidation, however, cannot often meet manganese standard for drinking water. Two types of oxidants, potassium permanganate ($KMnO_4$) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), were utilized at the same time for manganese oxidation, and then the precipitated manganese oxides were removed by low pressure membrane filtration in this study. In batch experiments, the multiple injection of both oxidants showed more effective manganese removal than did the single injection using either of them. Moreover, the deterioration of manganese removal at low temperature was less serious for the multiple injection than that for the single injection. Manganese removal by the continuous system of oxidation by multiple injection combined with membrane filtration was higher than those by batch experiments at the same oxidation conditions. In addition, less membrane fouling was observed for membrane filtration with oxidation during continuous membrane filtration than membrane filtration without oxidation. These results indicate that the oxidation by multiple injection coupled with membrane filtration was efficient and applicable to actual water treatment for manganese removal.

  • Diesel particulate filter has been adopted in new vehicle with diesel engine. Since the flow of exhaust gas was clogged as particulate matters were deposited in the filter, it have bad effects on a fuel consumption and power. It was investigated that a particulate filtering system with vacuum pump in the exhaust gas line could be free from clogging in previous research. In this study, the effects of water injection and position of inlet port in filtering system on reducing in particulate matter were investigated. It was noticed that particulate matter were decreased remarkable by water injection and moving the position of inlet port.

  • Fuel cell performance evaluation logic was developed using G-language (LabVIEW) to measure performance stability. Degree of stability and reliability of performance data were improved with averaged value and standard deviation method. Water injection system was introduced and the performance using this method was comparable to that of conventional humidification method. Water injection system has advantage of lowering operation energy consumption, reducing the number of parts needed in humidification, therefore increasing efficiency of fuel cell system. Fuel cell performance was decreased in case of low temperature operation such as sub freezing condition. Air purge method was tested to reduce the water content in cell fixture before sub freezing condition. The performance degradation due to low temperature operation was minimized by air purge method in medium size cell fixture ($25cm^2$) case.

  • In order to evaluate the gravity-injection capability to maintain core cooling after a loss-of-shutdown-cooling event during shutdown operation, the plant conditions of the Yong Gwang Units 3&4 were reviewed. The six cases of possible gravity-injection paths from the refueling water tank (RWT) were identified and the thermal-hydraulic analyses were performed using the RELAP5/MOD3.2 code. The core cooling capability was significantly dependent on the gravity-injection path, the RCS opening, and the injection rate. In the cases with the pressurizer manway opening higher than the RWT water level, the coolant was held up in the pressurizer and the system pressure continued increasing after gravity-injection. The gravity injection eventually stopped due to the high system pressure and the core was uncovered. In the cases with the injection path and opening on the same leg side, the core cooling was dependent on whether the water injected from the RWT passed the core region or not. However, in the cases with the injection path and opening on the different leg side, the system was well depressurized after gravity-injection and the core boiling was successfully prevented for a long-term transient. In addition, from the sensitivity study on the gravity-injection flow rate, it was found that about 54 kg/s of injection rate was required to maintain the core cooling and the core cooling could be provided for about 10.6 hours after event with that injection rate from the RWT. Those analysis results would provide useful information to operators coping with the event.

  • We have carried out laboratory measurements of P-wave velocity and deformation strain during $CO_2$ injection into a porous sandstone sample, in dry and water-saturated conditions. The rock sample was cylindrical, with the axis normal to the bedding plane, and fluid injection was performed from one end. Using a piezoelectric transducer array system, we mapped fluid movement during injection of distilled water into dry sandstone, and of gaseous, liquid, and supercritical $CO_2$ into a water-saturated sample. The velocity changes caused by water injection ranged from $5.61\;to\;7.52\%$. The velocity changes caused by $CO_2$ injection are typically about $-6\%$, and about $-10\%$ for injection of supercritical $CO_2$, Such changes in velocity show that the seismic method may be useful in mapping $CO_2$ movement in the subsurface. Strain normal to the bedding plane was greater than strain parallel to the bedding plane during $CO_2$ injection; injection of supercritical $CO_2$ showed a particularly strong effect. Strain changes suggest the possibility of monitoring rock mass deformation by using borehole tiltmeters at geological sequestration sites. We also found differences associated with $CO_2$ phases in velocity and strain changes during injection.

  • It is fundamental to control individual condition of every seedling. Automatic individual control is used by data control and analysis at on-line. As a result the best condition system was build without all waste. This system uses one of new technology irrigation system. This irrigation system supply accurate quantity of nutrient solution in the shortest time. The system named the upward injection irrigation system. First of all it is necessary to be considered whether the soil is proper or improper for upward injection irrigation system. It is important that root absorb nutrient solution as fast as possible. The ability of spreading, storing water, contamination of environment and cost were considered when choose the medium. The soil of organic culture is developed recently. The soil consists of paper pulp and vermiculite. The new soil is more suitable than ordinary medium for growing plant because this medium is made of paper pulp. The ability of store and spread of water is it's feature. We can make paper tray of this paper pulp's raw material. It is possible that pulp tray replaced plastic tray. The original plug tray of growing seedling system can make which consist of pulp medium and pulp tray. In this study, it was examined whether the plug seedling of paper pulp medium grow with upward injection irrigation system in this seedling plant system. At the same time, examine ability of store and spread of water and how to grow plant on the paper pulp medium.

  • An aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) model is simulated by FEFLOW according to the scenario of heat pump operation in two layered confining aquifer. The scenario is consisted of 4 steps: 90 days pumping (west well) and waste water injection (east well: 35 $^{\circ}C$), 90 day s stop, 90days pumping (east well) and waste water injection (west well: 5 $^{\circ}C$), and 95 days stop. The injection of the waste water is limited in the second layer and the first layer is aquitard. The temperature distribution at the surface shows low difference with reference temperature and opposit aspect with that of the second layer because the thermal transition through the first layer is very slow. Even though the simulated thermal transition in the aquifer system have a difference with real ATES system, optimal design and operate system can be developed with field tests and operational experience.

  • Fluoride was first introduced into the drinking water of residents of Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1945 for the prevention of dental caries. Ever since, growing numbers of communities favor fluoridation. Now, over 7000 communities in the United States are adding F(0.7~1.2ppm) to their drinking water. The most effective to prevent tooth decay is putting lower concentrated fluoride(F, 0.7~1.2ppm) into drinking water. However, exact fluoride injection amount have not been decided, because the research of the fluoride injection effect was insufficient. Therefore, after separating fluoridation and non-fluoridation into public water supplies, we investigated concentration of fluoride, alkalinity, Al, Ca, Mg, evaporation residuals in APT, domestic, commercial area. Then, we decided allowable concentration of fluoride, injection point of fluoride in water supply system, cost effectiveness.
