This study examined effects of crude oil on the phase II drug-metabolizing enzymes UDP-glucuronosyl transferase (UDPGT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in mussel Mytilus edulis and rockfish Sebastes schlegeli, a representative bivalve and a culture fish, respectively. This work also intended indirectly to evaluate the post impact recovery from the massive oil tanker spillage accidents occurred during the summer of 1995 in the sea area off Yosu City, Chonnam. For these, enzyme activities of UDPGT and GST were examined in the fish and mussel following laboratory exposure to fresh crude oil, weathered oil, field-obtained oil residues, or in the field biota samples. Decreased GST activity was observed in rock fish following exposure to oil-soluble fraction (OSF) of fresh oil. A similar diminished GST activity was also observed after OSF of artificially weathered oil. OSF of field oil residues retrieved from the spillage area approximately 1 year later also exerted a slight inhibition of GST to rockfish. There was neither a change in UDPGT in rockfish, nor were there changes in mussel in both enzymes to any oil fractions. We could not observe any difference in the two enzymes either in rockfish or mussel sampled from the field during $1.5{\sim}2.0$ years post spillage, indicating that their enzyme systems might had been recovered by the sampling time. In conclusion, it seems that the inhibition of GST activity in rockfish is a biomarker response to crude oil exposure. The results, however, must be interpreted with care, as the inhibition nay reflect various factors such as oil concentration, duration and water temperature.

Studies applying multiple carrier method such as OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) or FMT(Filtered Multi-Tone) to Underwater acoustic communication(UAC) system are actively under way as UAC is utilized in the various fields and the demand of high speed data transmission increases. In the existing OFDM method, the use of virtual carrier, which is inserted not to affect the adjacent channel in the frequency domain, and the cyclic prefix, which is used to reduce the impact of Inter Symbol Interference and Inter Channel Interference, decrease the throughput. In particular, the length of cyclic prefix to be used becomes longer under water since underwater has a rapidly changing channel characteristic, and the data throughput diminishes because it has to allocate more subcarrier on virtual carrier. This study therefore suggests FMT-OFDM system, a combination of OFDM and FMT, for the purpose of enhanced throughput in the underwater channel environment. Besides, in this study, channel is modeled based on data measured in real sea and the performance is analyzed after setting system parameters.

This study examined the long-term behavior of a roadbed using high-speed railway concrete track and roadbed measurement data and evaluated the long-term performance of the track and roadbed. Recently, high-speed railway track type has been adopted as a concrete slab. On the other hand, the concrete track is vulnerable to roadbed settlement. In the case of gravel tracks, it is easy to restore the original state by maintenance even if the roadbed settles. On the other hand, in the case of the concrete track, if excessive settlement of the roadbed occurs, cracks are generated continuously on the slabs and sleepers, resulting in greatly reduced usability. For this reason, it is difficult to restore the original state only by partial maintenance. In this paper, a long-term performance evaluation was carried out on a concrete track during operation by monitoring the measurement data of sensors buried from the beginning of construction for approximately 3 years after the high-speed railway opened. Performance evaluation methods include a performance evaluation of track/roadbed when the train passes, long-term track and roadbed performance evaluation, analysis of the track/roadbed effect on long-term settlement and analysis of the factors influencing long-term settlement. The trail response of KTX-Sancheon was greatest in the track/roadbed performance evaluation by train. The results of the long-term track and roadbed performance evaluation were measured within the standard values. The track and roadbed performance impact assessment with long-term settlement was strongly related to TCL settlement. The influences of the water content and groundwater level were verified by analyzing the external factors of long-term settlement. Through such a method, the stability of a track/roadbed can be secured.

A gyratory compactor was developed to reflect the field compaction roller, which is commonly used in road construction. Unlike the compaction of the proctor using a conventional impact load, the gyratory compactor simulated the field roller compaction characteristics using the compressive force by the roller weight and the shear force through the rotation of a roller. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear stress and density change characteristics during compaction, which are difficult to obtain in the existing compaction process of the proctor, and to utilize it as a basic data for road design. The compaction characteristics of sand and subgrade soils were also analyzed and evaluated using the gyratory compactor. The compaction characteristics obtained using the gyratory compaction are basically the number of gyrations, height of the specimen, compaction density, void ratio, degree of saturation, and shear stress. As the number of gyrations increased, the height of the specimen decreased, the compaction density increased, the void ratio decreased, the degree of saturation increased, and the shear stress tended to increase. The shear stress of the compacted specimens started at 200 kPa in the initial stage of compaction and increased to approximately 330 to 350 kPa at 50 gyrations. The compaction density, degree of saturation and shear stress tended to increase with increasing water content in the same specimens. Compaction using turning compaction has the advantage of measuring the physical properties required for road design, such as density and shear stress, so that more engineering road design will be possible if it is reflected in road design.

Five year term study from 2002 to 2006 was carried out to examine the effects of continuous long-term application of swine liquid manure on soil chemical properties including heavy metal contents and yield of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) in a greenhouse. Treatments were conventional chemical fertilizers and three types of swine slurry; Slurry composting and biofiltration (SCB), Thermophilic aerobic oxidation (TAO), and Bio-mineral water (BMW). Total nitrogen level of the SCB, TAO, and BMW was 0.47%, 0.09%, and less than 0.01%, respectively. The heavy metal contents of the three liquid manures were much lower than the Korean regulation level. The soil phosphorus, potassium, and heavy metal contents after five year continuous application of swine slurry were not significantly higher than those of chemical fertilizer use. Contents of heavy metals in leaves of the crops did not show significant difference among treatments. The levels of copper and zinc, plant essential elements, in leaves were in the range of optimum plant growth. Yields of tomato and cucumber for swine liquid manures were not significantly different from that of chemical fertilizer. The results implied that the three types of swine slurry may not deteriorate soil chemical properties including phosphate and trace elements in greenhouse soils when they are applied as a basal fertilization at a recommended nitrogen rate based on soil testing.

The vegetation area that occupies 76% in land surface of the earth can give a considerable impact on water resources, environment and ecological system by future climate change. The purpose of this study is to predict future vegetation cover information from NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) extracted from satellite images. Current vegetation information was prepared from monthly NDVI (March to November) extracted from NOAA AVHRR (1994 - 2004) and Terra MODIS (2000 - 2004) satellite images. The NDVI values of MODIS for 5 years were 20% higher than those of NOAA. The interrelation between NDVIs and monthly averaged climate factors (daily mean, maximum and minimum temperature, rainfall, sunshine hour, wind velocity, and relative humidity) for 5 river basins of South Korea showed that the monthly NDVIs had high relationship with monthly averaged temperature. By linear regression, the future NDVIs were estimated using the future mean temperature of CCCma CGCM2 A2 and B2 climate change scenario. The future vegetation information by NOAA NDVI showed little difference in peak value of NDVI, but the peak time was shifted from July to August and maintained high NDVIs to October while the present NDVI decrease from September. The future MODIS NDVIs showed about 5% increase comparing with the present NDVIs from July to August.
This study investigated a long-term variation trend of water quality, fish compositions, and ecological health conditions in the Gwanpyeong stream located in the nearby Daejeon metropolitan city to understand the impact of urban development projects on the aquatic ecosystem. The sampling was made in four surveys (2009, 2010, 2016, 2019) before and after urbanization. The urban development was conducted in 2008, resulting in the stream's ecological disturbance, and the stream restoration was conducted in 2012. Thus, stream monitoring was conducted to analyze the ecological trends before and after the restoration. The multi-metric models for Fish Assessment Index(FAI) and necropsy-based Health Assessment Index(HAI) were applied in the fish community and organ-level, respectively, to assess the ecological health of the stream. Minimum turbidity and chlorophyll-a(Chl-a) occurred in the mid-stream(St. 2), and this was probably due to rapid current velocity in the riffle zone. We collected 18 fish species, and the dominant species was Zacco platypus (40.6%). In 2016 immediately after the stream restoration, the relative proportions of sensitive species and insectivore species were the highest along with highest values in the species diversity and species richness index, resulting in the best condition in the ecological health, based on FAI model values. However, the ecological health, based on the FAI, became worse in the latest survey conducted in 2019. The analysis of the HAI model based on the organ-level approach showed skin erosion in the fish of upper stream, kidney defects in downstream, and the liver and gill defects observed in all sites, indicating that the anatomical health was also affected.

The recycling of industrial wastes in the concrete manufacturing is of increasing interest worldwide, due to the high environmental impact of the cement and concrete industries and to the rising demand of infrastructures, both in industrialized and developing countries. The production of municipal wastes in the South Korea is estimated at about 49,902 ton per day and only 14.5% of these are incinerated and principally disposed of in landfill. These quantities will increase considerably with the growth of municipal waste production, the progressive closing of landfill, so the disposal of municipal solid waste incinerator(MSWI) ashes has become a continuous and significant issue facing society, both environmentally and economically. MSWI ash is the residue from waste combustion processes at temperature between $850^{\circ}C\;and\;1,000^{\circ}C$. And the main components of MSWI ash are $SiO_2,\;CaO\;and\;Al_2O_3$. The aim of this study is to find a way to useful application of MSWI ash(after treatment) as a structural material and to investigates the hydraulic activity, compressive strength development composition variation of such alkali-activated MSWI ashes concrete. And it was found that early cement hydration, followed by the breakdown and dissolving of the MSWI-ashes, enhanced the formation of calcium silicate hydrates(C-S-H). The XRD and SEM-EDS results indicate that, both the hydration degree and strength development are closely connected with a curing condition and a alkali-activator. Compressive strengths with values in the 40.5 MPa were obtained after curing the activated MSWI ashes with NaOH+water glass at $90^{\circ}C$.
This study was carried out to clarify the impact of land use (Castanea crenata, Pinus densiflora and Plantation Land) on soil runoff in small watershed. The soil runoff showed in order of plantation land, Castanea stand and Pinus stand. The resulting models in linear equations of three stands were able to account for 70%, 60% and 60% respectively. The relationship between soil runoff and forest environmental factors was a positive correlation at 1% level with slope, forest type, soil hardness, watershed area, stream length and at 5% level with accumulative rainfall, but was negative correlation at 1% level with coverage. The main factors that affected soil runoff in small watershed showed in order of coverage, accumulative rainfall and stand type. In the stepwise regression between soil runoff and forest environmental factors, the estimation equation is as follow; Y = 31.250 - 1.140(Coverage) + 0.413(Accumulative rainfall) + 20.829(Forest type). The results indicates that dangerous areas of landslide and soil runoff by land use could be applied to the mitigation measures such as afforestation, erosion check dam and revetment for erosion control and water quality management in small watershed.
