  • The regional-scale transient groundwater-river interaction model is developed to gain a better understanding of the regional-scale relationships and interactions between groundwater and river system and quantify the residual river flow after groundwater abstraction from the aquifers with climate variability in the Waimea Plains, New Zealand. The effect of groundwater abstraction and climate variability on river flows is evaluated by calculating river flows at the downstream area for three different drought years (a 1 in 10 drought year, 1 in 20 drought year, and 1 in 24 drought year) and an average year with metered water abstraction data. The effect of future water demand (50 year projection) on river flows is also evaluated. A significant increase in the occurrence of zero flow, or very low flow of 100 L/sec at the downstream area is predicted due to large groundwater abstraction increase with climate variability. Modeling results shows the necessity of establishing dynamic cutback scenarios of water usage to users over the period of drought conditions considering different climate variability from current allocation limit to reduce the occurrence of low flow conditions at the downstream area.

  • In Korea Electric Power Corporation (or KEPCO), several Demand-Side Management (or DSM) program have been carried out to effectively meet electric power demand at least costs by modifying customers electricity use patterns. As one of them, KEPCO applies low-priced night thermal-storage power service for heat appliances to facilitate efficient use of power facilities by shifting relatively high daytime demands to night hours to build loads during the off-peak periods. In the market of heat-storage type water-heater, electric water-heater has been mostly used, but it has low energy efficiency and needs high capacity electric equipments. So in order to replace these electric water heaters, 15 HP air-source heat pump water heater is developed in Korea Electric Research Institute (or KEPRI). This paper shows that measurement system for performance testing of heat pump water heater is established and heating capacity and performance is analyzed and measured for out-door environmental change.

  • Forestry and agricultural land uses constitute 85% of Korea and these land uses are typically mixed in many watersheds. Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) concentration is a primary factor for managing water qualities of the water resources in Korea. BOD loadings from diffuse sources, however, not well monitored yet. This study aims to assess BOD loadings from diffuse sources and their affecting factors to conserve quality of water resources. Event Mean Concentration (EMC) of BOD was calculated based on the monitoring data of forty rainfall events at four agricultural-forestry watersheds. Exceedence cumulative probability of BOD EMCs were plotted to show agricultural activities in a watershed impacts on the magnitude of EMCs. Prediction equation for each rainfall event was proposed to estimate BOD EMCs: $EMC_{BOD}(mg/L)=EXP(0.413+0.0000001157{\times}$(discharged runoff volume in $m^3$)+0.018${\times}$(ratio of agricultural land use to total watershed area).

  • A Water Level gauge which composes a water supply system for water demand, information transmission system and the solar storehouse electromotive floodgate, regarding the structure plan and a production of the nothing power automatic floodgate it described. The important point must solve but urgently will compare the water amount used from system establishment place or not one. and It must give proof the efficient characteristic of system, must solve the technical problem portion against revision of the accuracy of upper downstream canal which is information transmission system of the Self-controlled check gate. The solar floodgate is more economic with the base which will reach and the system construction which is accurate.

  • River water and industrial waste water in Seoul were studied by means of chemical oxygen demand(COD) as an indicator for water pollution, from August 1967 to July 1968. Rivers flowing through residential and industrial areas are badly contaminated and COD of water in Han River increases as it progresses to downstream. Seasonal variation of COD showed that higher value of COD was observed in spring and lower in autumn. It is clear that the seasonal variation of COD is influenced by the precipitation. Close relationship was found between COD and population density. The lowest COD curve obtained by plotting COD values against population density and show that the curve slopes upward. The discontinuation of the curve was shown at the population density of 14,000/km$^2$; an increase in COD was acute over the population density of 14,000/km$^2$.

  • The variation of the urban water demand and the amount of water in the distribution reservoir was studied with time for a day. The city of Kwangju in Korea was selected as a study area. The population of Kwangju in the end of 1993 was more than one million and two hundred thousand peoples. The average of daily water use in 1993 was about three hundred and fifty thousand tons a day. One day was devided into 12 divisions with a 2 hour increment. The water use demand related to the amount of water in the distribution reservoir was observed for the given time interval of a day. The water use index was defind in percentage that indicates the ratio of the amount of water use for a time interval to the amount of water use for a day. The water use index with consideration of the water stored in the reservoir was found to be useful to manage and to operate the water supply systems in real time.

  • As we are approaching on the new paradigm for the water resource management. This is because there has been changed on the water resource environment. People want more water whenever they need, however increased absolute demand does not always meet the demand. Furthermore many water related social conflicts are getting increased in recent decades. Consequently, the emphasis of water policy became the core of water resource management. Therefore, research on the water resource policy should be diversified to derive prefer water management. In Korea this research has been done in recent, but within a very narrow view. We tried to evaluate the current status and suggest the direction of water resource policy.
