  • This study discusses the properties of shrinkage of high performance concrete with W/B and water content. According to results, drying shrinkage decrease of water content due to the influence of autogenous shrinkage. And drying shrinkage is reduced with a decrease of water content. As W/B decreases, autogenous shrinkage increases because shrinkage by hydration is generated greatly due to an increase of binder content. Also, as water content decreases, it is reduced because of a decrease of cement paste by cement content.

  • The hypothesis that three classes of water exist in hydrogels, namely X water (free water-like), Z-water (bound water-like), and Y water (interfacial water-like), has been verified and generally accepted. To further check the validity of this hypothesis and to study the nature of X, Y, and Z water as conformation changes, several experiments have been done using Tactic Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (P-HEMA) gels. Thermal expansively data for tactic P-HEMA gel was obtained. In each case of isotactic and syndiotactic P-HEMA, the higher water content gels showed an extremely sharp volume change at $0^{\circ}C$, indicating the presence of normal free water-like. Lower water content gels showed no anomalous change in thermal expansion, indicating that the water is bound water-like. The medium water content gels exhibited intermediate behavior. These results were also confirmed by bulk gel conductivity measurments. The differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) experiment was simply introduced to further verify the bound water-like quantities which was obtained by the method of dilatometry and specific conductivity. Observing the amounts of X, Y, and Z water with the change of tacticity, the similar content of bound water-like may be due to the same primary structure of isotactic and syndiotactic polymer and the difference in free and interfacial water-like content may be due to the difference in secondary and tertiary structure of tactic polymer. Therefore, as the polymer conformation varies, the free and interfacial water-like content will be varied. In order to demonstrate these concepts, Russel et al.'s CPK space-filling molecular models of isotactic and syndiotactic P-HEMA was utilized.

  • Unsaturated soil has a possibility to induce a negative pore water pressure. Until now, saturated soil is mainly focused on the research of soil mechanics. Recently, soil mechanics is researched on two major parts such as saturated and unsaturated soil mechanics. Negative pore water pressure has a non-linear relationship with the water content changes. Soil-water characteristic curves of soil in Korea are not determined. There is no proper characteristic value such as air-entry value and residual water content. In this study, the characteristic curves of reclaimed soil, sand, and weathered granite soil were determined by laboratory tests. Air-entry value and residual water content were determined by fitting methods. Soil-water characteristic curves were estimated based on the particle-size distribution and compared with the laboratory test results. The results of soil-water characteristic curves estimation indicated that Fredlund and Wilson's model is excellent for sand and weathered granite soil. Arya and Paris's model is excellent for reclaimed soil.

  • This study is to investigate the change of the seasonal patterns of relative water relations parameters by the pressure-volume curves in pinus koraiensis needles. The osmotic potentials at full water saturated(Ψ0, sat) and at incipient plasmolysis(Ψ0, tlp) increased in growing season, while decreased in non-growing season. The maximum bulk modulus of elasticity(Emax), relative water content(RWCTLP), and relativefree water content(FWCtlp) at incipient plasmolysis in non-growing season were higher than these of growing season. The maximum pressure potential(Ψp, max) varied from 1.16 to 2.18MPa, torgor index(TI) varied from 3.1 to 4.7. The osmole number(Ns/dw) and symplastic water (Vo/DW) were variable seasonally. The maximum water content(Vt/DW) and apoplastic water(AW) were relatively high in early growing stage, and then decreased to needle aging. The pressure potential(Ψp) and water potential(Ψ) in winter needles were rapidly decreased with decreasing of relative water content. The matric potential occupied over 10 percent of water potential with less than-2.0 MPa.

  • We analyzed contents of cations and anions for the domestic bottled drinking water. Results showed that total cation content was 45.81 mg/L and contained 40% of Ca. The content of cations were decreased in the order of Ca>Si>Na>Mg>K. Total anion content was 12.20 mg/L and contained 90% of ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$. $F^-$ and $NO_{3-}N$ were a little contained. While Si content was reduced 2.3~75.7%(mean value:38.5%) after freezing, Ca content was reduced 45.2% after boiling. It showed that water containing higher Ca content was significantly decreased after boiling. Precipitates formed by freezing and boiling is composed of minerals such as Si and Ca. Compared to minerals from food intake, concentrations of minerals from water intake are expected to be less influenced. It is recommended Bottled Water that contains more than 20 mg/L of Ca(exceeding water-quality standard for turbidity) is safe to drink without thawing and boiling.

  • Presence of water in the lubricating oils could be one of the first indicators of potentially expensive and possibly catastrophic failure of the machine as it may cause displace the oil films to prevent the lubrication function of the oil or chemically react with many oil additives resulting in the oil degradation. In order to detect water content quantitatively in lubricating oils many methods and sensors has been developed. Among these, capacitive sensors including sensitive layer, whose dielectric factor changes according to the water content absorbed in the layer, are proposed mainly in the market. But these sensors are not sensitive to a high water content. Besides, the absorbing layer soils in time. In this work, an evaporation of water moisture from oil into air volume above lubricant surface and condensation of water vapor at a cooling surface was used to measure water content quantitatively in an lubricating oil. Laboratory test results of a prototype sensor were presented. Test results showed that the proposed method could be avaliable to measure a low levels of oil moisture.

  • Friction of mechanical components affects the life and reliability of various machines. In order to improve the wear resistance of mechanical components, grease has been used as a lubricant. However, depending on the operating condition of the machine, the grease may be contaminated with water, which lowers the its lubricating ability. In this work, the effect of the water content on the lubricating ability of grease was investigated. Friction tests using grease were performed between a stainless steel ball and an acrylic plate. Water content in the grease was varied (0, 5, 10 wt.%). It was found that the contact angle varied due to the addition of water in the grease. The friction and wear of the specimens were assessed with respect to amount of water content. Wear of the specimens was relatively severe when water was added. A water content of 10 wt.% resulted in significant lubricant degradation.

  • This study was conducted to understand how osmotic potentials in Lentinula edodes tissues are related to water contents and how they change while a mushroom matures. Water content and osmotic potential of L. edodes mushroom tissues from log cultivation and sawdust cultivation were measured and the relationships were analyzed. Osmotic potentials in the tissues were exponentially proportional to their moisture contents and there were strain differences in the potentials. Strain 290 has lower osmotic potential than strain 302, in the tissues at the same water content. As the mushrooms mature, tissue water content maintained ca 94% in head tissues and ca 90% in gills, but significantly decreased from ca 90% to 82% in the stipe tissues. Osmotic potential changes were similar to the tissue water content changes as the mushrooms mature. While osmotic potentials maintained -0.25 to -0.45 MPa in head and gill tissues, the potentials greatly decreased from -0.65 to -1.33 MPa in stipe tissues. Our results show that osmotic potentials in L. edodes tissues are exponentially proportional to tissue water contents, that strains differ in osmotic potential related to water, and that stipe tissues can still have nutritional value when they mature.

  • Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), an alkaloid rich in Ligusticum wallichii and fermented products, possesses multiple pharmacological activities in antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and antibacterial. This study aimed to investigate the effect of TMP (15 mg/L) on the physicochemical and gelation properties of rabbit myofibrillar proteins (MPs) with/without oxidative stress. Results showed that compared to the control, oxidative stress to MPs decreased free thiol content, gel yield, whiteness, water-holding capacity, bounder water, immobilized water, and endogenous tryptophan fluorescence intensity, but increased surface hydrophobicity, dityrosine content, and free water content (p<0.01). Without oxidative stress, MPs treated with TMP increased free thiol content, whiteness, and bound water, but decreased dityrosine content and free water (p<0.05). Under oxidative conditions, all parameters were conversely affected by TMP (p<0.01). The results suggest that TMP can be an antioxidant to decrease the concern on oxidative deterioration during meat processing and storage by improving the oxidative stability, water retention, and gel forming property of rabbit MPs.
