This study was done to provide a case model with a concept of environmental integration based on the water circulation system. Area of interest (AOI) is the Eastern Pangyo New Town area, which has several advantages in adaptation of a water circulation system. The AOI has a potential of maintaining water resources, and has a good condition to construct the water circulation system. Research done for the purpose of the establishment of the water circulation system in the Eastern Pangyo New Town shows the following. The main sources of water supply in the water circulation system in the Eastern Pangyo New Town is from two subway stations and runoff water, along with the natural water flowing from the mountains, rain water, and stream water. It was determined that more than 35,000 tons of water would be needed for the creation of water circulation system at the Eastern Pangyo. If the creation of infrastructure for the use of runoff and rain water as well as the periodic management can be provided, it can serve as the new model for a new city with water circulation system. In addition, since the Eastern Pangyo New Town water circulation system can secure enough amount of water resources, natural drainage system (NDS) in which it can be in dry condition in non-rainy days, is applied and connected to the typical waterways. Such water circulation system has many positive aspects including the wise use of water resources, and providing wild Life animals corridors and habitats. Also, the water circulation system can lead to the environmental education to the residents and visitors on environmental awareness of the water circulation system and their environment.

The objectives of this study are to develop a stormwater management system that would contribute to improving water circulation, recycling storm water and promoting biodiversity in urban areas, to apply the system in an actual site, and to verify its effectiveness in order to generate a stormwater management system applicable in Korea. This study reviewed former researches and case studies, categorized stormwater management system into pre-treatment, retention and infiltration phases, and analyzed the strength and weakness of the techniques by synthesizing unit techniques of each stage. As a result, the process of the stormwater management system includes the following phases: 1) a rubble filtration layer; 2) a retention pond; 3) a infiltration pond; and 4) a stormwater retention pool (recirculation and recycling). Then, an empirical study to design and create the generated system according to the features of a site and to verify its effectiveness was conducted. The future study direction is to verify the effectiveness of the developed stormwater retention and infiltration ponds. To this end, it is planned to perform hydrological monitoring using automatic measuring equipment and monitoring on habitat bases and the biota living on the base. Based on its outcome, the applied model would be refined and improved to develop an alternative stormwater management system that would allow to achieve the improvement of urban water circulation, increase of biodiversity and efficient use of water resources.

Intermittent deep draw artificial circulation system is one of the most widely used destratification systems to control algal bloom in reservoirs in Korea. However, there have been neither theoretical background of design criteria nor operation guide line for efficient application of the system available for such systems. A design method was developed to calculate required compressor capacity and number of circulation units considering physical interactions between stratified water layers and plumes induced by the intermittent deep draw artificial circulation system. The program was tested with data observed in Yeoncho Lake. The results indicated that the developed method can applied in the fields successfully. Further validation processes would improve design and operation methods.
Purpose: The green building certification system in Korea was introduced in 2002 and developed as an improvement version of the G-SEED(Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design) system in 2013. This study conducts surveys targeting architectural designers and users on significance of certification assessment criteria for apartment buildings on the G-SEED system and examines the differential views between the two groups on assessment criteria. Method: First, The AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) method was used to find importance of assessment criteria and then the importances were compared with weighted points on the certification standard. Second, the t-test was used to investigate differential views between designer and user groups on certification assessment criteria based on drawn importances. Result: (1) While designer group considered land use and transportation, energy and environmental pollution, and water circulation management as more important, user group did material and resource, maintenance management, ecological environment, and indoor environment as more important. (2) Based on t-test results, sustainable energy, water circulation system, site management, habitat, acoustical environment, and light environment were found to be different on importance between the two groups.

Although planning techniques linking parks, green areas, and waterways have become common, there are frequent disruptions in the operation and management of landscape-use artificial channels (LuAC). Therefore, this study examined a design to promote the sustainable management and operation of a LuAC using rainwater for the streamlets of the Jeonju-Wanju Innovative City. In order to accomplish the purpose of this study, scenarios were set up by dividing the design into waterhead and waterway portions. First, the scenario regarding the waterhead was analyzed to calculate the water supply and storage required for the waterway and waterhead. The analysis showed that the waterway requires a water supply of 676.8 tons/months, 3,018 tons to 5,512 tons of storage space, and a water depth of 0.75 m to 1.37 m considering the ecological and landscape aspects. The second scenario is to select an effective system of facilities for the operation and management of the LuAC. To accomplish this, a single-circulation system (SCS), which transports water to a highland location was compared to a multi-circulation system (MCS), which supplied water separately to each water space and operated independently. The results showed that the MCS, which was operated independently by small power units, was more effective owing to the vast difference in water supply operation times.

This study focused on establishing a natural rainwater circulation system using rainwater meant for relatively large urban development projects such as a new town development. In particular, when the location selection techniques for individual elements of a natural rainwater circulation system are developed for the integrated rainwater management, changes in hydrological environment will be minimized and the natural water circulation would be restored to realize the low impact development (LID). In that case, not only the excess will be reduced but water space and green areas in a city would also increase to improve the urban sustainability. First of all, there were five elements selected for the location selection of a rainwater circulation system intended for the integrated rainwater management: rainwater collection, infiltration, filtration, retention and movement spaces. After generating these items, the location selection items and criteria were defined for each of the five elements. For a technique to apply the generated evaluation items and criteria, a grid cell analysis was conducted based m the suitability index theory, and thematic maps were overlapped through suitability assessment of each element and graded based on the suitability index. The priority areas were identified for each element. The developed technique was applied to a site where Gim-cheon Innovation City development is planned to review its feasibility and limitations. The combined score of the overlapped map for each element was separated into five levels: very low, low, moderate, high and very high. Finally, it was concluded that creating a rainwater circulation system conceptual map m the current land use plan based on the outcome of the application would be useful in building a water circulation system at the de1ailed space planning stage after environmental and ecological planning. Furthermore, we use the results of this study as a means for environment-friendly urban planning for sustainable urban development.
As the impermeable area increases due to urbanization and industrialization, the influence of non-point pollutants caused by rainfall runoff on the water system is increasing. In the past, the best management practices(BMP) were used a lot to manage non-point pollutants, but recently, technology that naturally treats them through LID (Low Impact Development) technology is widely used. In this study, various rainfall events were simulated through the SWMM model based on the data of rainfall monitoring in bioretention among natural facilities. The characteristic of LID modeling research is that it is difficult to build accurate modeling data with short-term data because real data is the result obtained through natural facilities, and it is difficult to implement an accurate model. In this study, the data monitored for 3 years It is significant in that it has built a precise model. The actual data monitored a total of 18 times was simulated, and the inflow and outflow and the removal efficiency of five pollutants were simulated. As a result of performing the performance evaluation, most of the 7 items showed excellent indicators, and the TN and TP showed relatively low simulation performance. In the future, it is expected that Korea will introduce an integrated water management system in which the water supply system and the sewage system are substantially integrated and operated. Therefore, the results of this study are considered to play an important role in the initial stage of rainfall management in the future integrated water management system, and the extent of rainfall runoff reduction and pollutant reduction in the expected installation area can be predicted in advance. This is expected to prevent overdesign of bioretention.

The current water-management paradigm is changing from the expansion of reservoirs and facilities for simple outflows and non-point source management to the building of a sound water circulation system throughout the watershed. Based on this, water management for the watershed as a whole is establishing standards through local ordinances. The purpose of this study is to establish water cycle targets that are resilient to water management even after the development of cities in watersheds where water management is highly needed. This was done by referring to research and ordinances related to water circulation by local governments. A method is proposed based on a storage and infiltration method for rainfall. Through a comparison of percentiles, it was found that the water circulation target of a planned waterside city can be treated with 52% of total rainfall and 80% of rainfall of 17 mm per day. To quantitatively improve the quality results of these calculation procedures, it is estimated that the calculation of water cycle targets will be more reliable if other various variables such as the safety of low impact development factors or the selection of appropriate specifications are considered later.

This study examined the ef ects of freshwater discharge by artificial dikes from the Kanwol and Bunam lakes on the dynamics in the Chunsu Bay, Yellow Sea, Korea, during the summer season based on three-dimensional numerical modeling experiments. Model performances were evaluated in terms of skill scores for tidal elevation, velocity, temperature, and salinity and these scores mostly exceeded 90 %. The variability in residual currents before and after the freshwater discharge was examined. The large amount of lake water discharge through artificial dikes may result in a dramatically changed density field in the Chunsu Bay, leading to an estuarine circulation system. The density-driven current formed as a result of the freshwater inflow through the artificial dikes (Kanwol/Bunam) caused a partial change in the tidal circulation and a change in the scale and location of paired residual eddies. The stratification formed by strengthened static stability following the freshwater discharge led to a dramatic increase in the Richardson number and lasted for a few weeks. The strong stratification suppressed the vertical flux and inhibited surface aerated water mixing with bottom water. This phenomenon would have direct and indirect impacts on the marine environment such as hypoxia/anoxia formation at the bottom.
In 2014, the city of Seoul revised the ordinance regarding water-cycle restoration in the Seoul Metropolitan areas by incorporating the 'Low Impact Development (LID)' policy. The new ordinance plan will utilize 630 mm or almost 45 to 50% of annual rainfall until 2050 by means of providing a rainwater management system consisting of infiltration, retention and vegetation. The LID is believed to be the key to achieving the target requirements, specifically in development projects. This research was performed to evaluate the stormwater runoff and pollutant reduction performance of three different LID facilities (water circulation facilities) including an infiltration inlet, bioretention swale, and permeable pavement constructed in Seoul City. Results show that among the water circulation facilities, the permeable pavement achieved the highest runoff reduction as it was able to entirely capture and infiltrate the runoff to the ground. However, in order to attain a long-term performance it is necessary to manage the accumulated sediment and trapped pollutants in the landscape areas through other water circulation techniques such as through soil erosion control. In terms of pollutant reduction capability, the infiltration inlet performed well since it was applied in highly polluted areas. The bioretention facility integrating the physico-chemical and biological mechanisms of soil, microorganisms and plants were able to also achieve a high runoff and pollutant reduction. The water circulation facilities provided not only benefits for water circulation but also various other benefits such as pollutant reduction, ecological restoration, and aesthetic functions.
