Imidazolium Chloride-LiCl Melts as Efficient Solvents for Cellulose

  • 1-Alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride-LiCl melts were prepared from the reaction of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([RMIm]Cl; R=allyl or n-butyl) and lithium chloride, and their ability to dissolve cellulose was evaluated. The solubility of cellulose was greatly increased to 320% when [RMIm]Cl was replaced by [RMIm][$LiCl_2$]. Dissolved cellulose in LiCl/[RMIm]Cl melts was successfully regenerated by adding water and LiCl/[RMIm]Cl melts were easily recovered by removing water. As supported by the computational results, the higher solubility of cellulose in [RMIm][$LiCl_2$] can be ascribed to the increased bond distance between anion and C(2)-H of the imidazolium ring compared with that in [RMIm]Cl, thereby resulting in the increased interaction between $[LiCl_2]^-$ and the hydroxyl groups of cellulose.

  • Water temperature is one of the most important factors of fish survival, affecting the habitat, migration route, development, and reproduction. This experiment studied the induction level of heat shock protein (HSP70) mRNA and protein in a walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) primary hepatocyte culture based on different temperatures. Hepatocytes were attached at 7.5℃ for 24 hours. Hsp70 induction levels were then measured for 48 hours at 5, 8, 11, 14, and 17℃. The induction level was lowest at 5℃ and generally increased with temperature until 14℃. The induction level was reduced at 17℃, indicating that 14℃ is the highest tolerable temperature for hepatocytes. These data indicate that primary hepatocyte cell culture is under no stress at 5 and 8℃. Temperatures greater than 11℃ induce stress, showing similar induction patterns in both mRNA and protein in hepatocytes. The results suggest that 14℃ is the maximum internal defense temperature of walleye pollock survival.

  • Solvolyses of isopropylsulfonyl chloride (IPSC) in water, D_2O,\;CH_3OD$, and in aqueous binary mixtures of acetone, ethanol and methanol are investigated at 25, 35 and 45$^{\circ}C$. The Grunwald-Winstein plot of first-order rate constants for the solvolytic reaction of IPSC with $Y_{Cl}$ (based on 2-adamantyl chloride) shows marked dispersions into three separate lines for three aqueous mixtures with a small slope (m < 0.30). The extended Grunwald-Winstein plots for the solvolysis of IPSC show better correlation. The kinetic solvent isotope effects determined in water and methanol are in consistent with the proposed mechanism of the general base catalyzed and/or $S_AN/S_N2$ reaction mechanism for IPSC solvolyses based on mass law and stoichiometric solvation effect studies.

해조류로부터 수용성 항산화 물질의 추출 (Extraction of Water Soluble Antioxidants from Seaweeds)

  • 우리나라 근해에 서식하는 여러 가지 해조류로부터 수용성 항산화 물질을 추출하여 라디칼 소거활성으로 항산화 활성을 측정하였다. 김, 미역, 다시마, 모자반, 청각, 톳, 홑파래 등에서 추출된 물질로부터 항산화 활성이 확인되었으며 이들중 홑파래에서 합성 항산화제인 BHT나 BHA보다 강한 강력한 항산화 성분이 추출되었다. 톳의 경우 홑파래에 필적할만한 항산화활성을 나타내었다. 항산화 성분을 확인하기위해 Sephadex LH-20 column 등을 이용해 성분분리를 시도하였는데 각 분획의 활성이 분리전의 활성보다 낮아져 성분분리를 하지 않았으며 이는 단일 성분이 아닌 다성분이 항산화 활성을 나타내는 것이다.

A Facile One-Pot Synthesis of 1-Substituted Tetrazole-5-thiones and 1-Substituted 5-Alkyl(aryl)sulfanyltetrazoles from Organic Isothiocyanates

  • Treatments of organic isothiocyanates (R-NCS) with $NaN_3$ in the presence of pyridine in water at room temperature gave corresponding various organic tetrazole-thiones, [$S=CN_4(R)$] (R = alkyl or aryl). Isolated products are obtained as white or yellow solids in good yields (76-97%). The molecular structure by X-ray diffraction study for one of products shows the proposed formation. In addition, one-pot synthesis of 1-substituted 5-alkyl(or aryl)sulfanyltetrazoles has been demonstrated. Addition of alkyl or aryl halides into the mixture of organic isothiocyanates, $NaN_3$, and pyridine in water at room temperature exclusively formed 1-substituted 5-alkyl(or aryl)sulfanyltetrazoles (S-derivatives) in high yields.

  • Synthesis of tetrahydroimidazo[1,2-a]pyridines and tetrahydropyrido[1,2-a] pyrimidines by a one-pot and three component reaction of ${\alpha}$-oxoketenedithioacetals, diamines and DMAD in water has been described. Different routes for accessing the desired compounds were examined and a few specially designed-substrates have been utilized further to afford the new imidazo and pyrido fused [1,8] naphthyridine tetracyclic compound by $S_NAr$ intramolecular cyclization.

Response surface analysis of removal of a textile dye by a Turkish coal powder

  • In the present study, an experimental design methodology was used to optimize the adsorptive removal of Basic Yellow 13 (BY13) using Turkish coal powder. A central composite design (CCD) consisting of 31 experiments was employed to evaluate the simple and combined effects of the four independent variables, initial dye concentration (mg/L), adsorbent dosage (g/L), temperature ($^{\circ}C$) and contact time (min) on the color removal (CR) efficiency (%) and optimizing the process response. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a high coefficient of determination value ($R^2=0.947$) and satisfactory prediction of the polynomial regression model was derived. Results indicated that the CR efficiency was not significantly affected by temperature in the range of $12-60^{\circ}C$. While all other variables significantly influenced response. The highest CR (95.14%), estimated by multivariate experimental design, was found at the optimal experimental conditions of initial dye concentration 30 mg/L, adsorbent dosage 1.5 g/L, temperature $25^{\circ}C$ and contact time 10 min.

Analysis of Chemical Warfare Agents in Water Using Single-Drop Microextraction

  • Single-drop microextraction (SDME) is an extraction methodology where the drop plays an essential role as extracts. It was evaluated for the GC-MS determination of nerve agents, one class of the chemical warfare agents (CWAs). Since these nerve agents are highly toxic, it is important to detect the nerve agents in the environmental samples. Several affecting factors including extraction solvents, stirring rate, extraction time, and amounts of salt were optimized. The limit of detections (LODs) were 0.1 - 10 ng/mL and the relative standard deviations (RSDs%, n=5) were in the range of 6.3% to 9.0% for four nerve agents. Without pretreatment of the environmental samples, 5-103 fold enrichments and 48-100% recovery were accomplished. These results demonstrated the feasibility of this method for on-site and off-site analysis of water sample collected from suspicious CWAs site.

제지폐수의 COD 저감 및 처리공정 최적화에 관한 연구 (COD Reduction and Process Optimization of Waste Water from the Paper-mill)

  • 제지산업에서 COD 부하 및 난분해성 COD 부하가 높은 생산지종별 발생폐수의 처리방안을 통하여 단위공정의 최적화와 방류수의 수질 안정화에 대해 연구하였다. 그 결과 1차 처리 공정에서는 SS와 더불어 colloid성 물질제거를 통한 COD 제거효율을 향상시키기 위해서 음이온 응집제 및 Alum의 병행사용이 효과적인 것으로 분석되었다. 또한 Fenton 산화법의 병행사용으로 인한 약품의 과량투입은 수질상태에 악영향을 주는 것으로 확인되었기 때문에 최적량인 $FeCl_2$$H_2O_2$의 비가 1:1인 농도비 1000 ppm 일 때 COD 제거율이 가장 높다고 판단된다.

  • 새로운 품질의 수용성 윤활유를 얻기 위해 시중에서 쉽게 구입할 수 있는 지방산인 대두유와 고분자 알콜로부터 에스테르 화합물을 합성하고 그 물성을 실험하였다. 아울러 대두유에 의한 에스데르 화합물의 합성과 그 물성을 보다 정량적으로 분석하기 위해 대두유주된 구성 지방산인 올레익산에 대해 동일 실험을 수행하여 그 물성을 비교하였다. 에스테르 합성반응에 사용된 고분자 알콜은 프로필렌 옥사이드와 에틸렌 옥사이드의 공중합 화합물(PE)로서 분자량에 따라 PE-61(평균분자량:2000), PE-62(평균분자량:2500), 그리고 PE-64(평균분자량:3200) 세 가지 화합물을 사용하였다. 합성된 에스테르 화합물의 물성은 물과 혼합한 이후 수용액 상태의 여러 농도에서 pH,비중,표면장력,유동점도를 측정하여 비교하였다.
